i’ll start with Maiia! i’ve never been her fan and i haven’t enjoyed most of her skating in the past, but she really owed her SP today. I love the opening. Using her long lines to make abstract but gorgeous lines and she definitely improved some of the stiffness she had in her body before! It’s a really nice program for her and she performs it well. It gets kind of meh/samey towards the end, but it’s a big step forward.
Sasha’s improvements are quite visible. She’s still not the most graceful or artistic, but you can see how they’re working on her lines and fluidity in her movements. I’m just impressed every time she performs this SP because it usually takes a lot of time before you can see visible improvements in someone’s skating. Good job to her and Plushy. The 3A is almost there, I honestly thought today might be the day she landed it cleanly! Almost there! Interpretation is something she loses as soon as she starts jumping, and the middle of the program seems a bit choppier and stiffer than it should be, but regardless the improvements are there, and they’re visible, and she’ll keep improving, too!
I loved the beginning of Aliona’s program. She was SELLING IT. One of my criticisms last year was that I thought she had lost some of her interpretation while training and doing bigger elements so it’s nice to see that side of her coming back. Everything was a little shakier than usual from Aliona today. Ina bauer not as extended (2A still absolutely amazing though), Lutz was definitely inside (comments here are saying different, maybe I should take another look!) Flip was huge, but the toe was an issue. Spins were slow and not as extended as usual, but there are all growing pains she can get through. There’s still room for a 3A looking at her 2A, and her jumps are still huge so she can clean them up. Spins probably just need more training. Not a fan of the StSq or music choice, but her skating is still fabulous. She’s so fluid and looks so beautiful just stroking and doing anything. I do wish she would relax her shoulders and neck, it can be a liiiittle distracting, but that’s being nitpicky.
I think both Sasha and Aliona were a bit overscored, especially the latter considering the mistakes, but the FS will be a different story because everyone is going to have to deliver. I hope Aliona has enough training to do a clean LP and maybe clean up some of those mistakes from the SP.
