Indeed he was in 2004, and it ended a 7-year streak of Russian men (Plushy and Yags) winning worlds.

I just realized that since 2004, only two Russian men have managed to medal at Worlds at all, Artur Gachinski in 2011 () and Mikhail Kolyada in 2018, both winning bronze.
