2020-21 Russian Men's figure skating

New Behind the Scenes feature from Channel One about Moskvich Skating Club. The focus is on Ilya Yablokov, but it also features his training mates Egor Murashov, Vladimir Samoilov, Andrei Anisimov, and Alexei Yerokhov.

OMG, a whole 45 minutes of Coach Vika and the Moskvich Boys! So nice to see them in the media spotlight for once 😊
Watching now - can't understand Russian, but I hope my knowledge of ice cream will help me get the gist of the video

You can use the Auto-translate feature on Youtube and select your language of choice from the list.

There might be some stray sheepskin coats in the mix, but probably better than nothing. xD
Not bad, about 30% of it made sense. I could understand the bit about Viktoria's parents switching her from Mishin to Kudriavtsev on Mishin's advice, since she was the only girl in his group? On the other hand, it butchered what she said to the guys during their on-ice training session ('baked Odessa')

Spotted glimpses of Matvei Vetlugin in the background, yippee 😍 If there's a JGP next season I hope he gets a spot.

And it looks like everyone likes to wear their favourite costumes to practice...

After that I'm more convinced than ever that Mark K is the future of Russian Men - No other person would have fought as hard as he did after sustaining that painful fall at the begining. He fought through the jumps and then finished on a high where others would have given up. He had great fitness within the program.

Now get him better programs.

After watching Russian Cup, I really don’t know who they will send to the World Champs for the second spot. I guess it will be easy to just send Semenenko, so he can go with Kolyada. Aliev really bounced back. I think he even won the free skate. They could send him due to reputation and he is defending European Champion.

I really didn't consider Aliev before the Russian Cup Final because I believed he needed to continue to recover from COVID and that it was between Kondratiuk and Ignatov. Even after the SP, I thought that was probably still the case. But after Aliev's impressive comeback in the FS in which he won the FS and came in 3rd overall, I thinking they might go with him now.

Breaking down things a little further for 2020-2021 season...

Dmitri Aliev
  • (Started season recovering from a back injury)
  • 3rd at 3rd Stage of Russian Cup
  • 5th at Rostelecom Cup
  • Withdrew from 5th Stage of Russian Cup (COVID)
  • Withdrew from Nats (COVID)
  • 4th at Channel One Trophy
  • 3rd at Russian Cup Final
Mark Kondratiuk
  • 8th at 2nd Stage of Russian Cup
  • 7th at 4th Stage of Russian Cup
  • Not at Rostelecom Cup
  • 3rd at Nats
  • 2nd at Channel One Trophy
  • 5th at Russian Cup Final
Makar Ignatov
  • 3rd at 1st Stage of Russian Cup
  • 3rd at 4th Stage of Russian Cup
  • 7th at Rostelecom Cup
  • 2nd at Nats
  • 3rd at Channel One Trophy
  • 8th at Russian Cup Final
Evgeni Semenenko
  • 4th at 2nd Stage of Russian Cup
  • 1st at 4th Stage of Russian Cup
  • 6th at Rostelecom Cup
  • 11th at Nats
  • 1st at Junior Nats
  • Not at Channel One Trophy
  • 1st at Russian Cup Final
Petr Gummenik
  • 3rd at 2nd Stage of Russian Cup
  • 3rd at Rostelecom Cup
  • 1st at 5th Stage of Russian Cup
  • 7th at Nats (fighting a back injury)
  • Not at Channel One Trophy
  • 2nd at Russian Cup Final
So who do you go with? And that's assuming you don't consider previous seasons, like 2020 in which Aliev won Russian Nats and Euros, and Ignatov was 4th at Nats and Gummenik was 7th at Nats.

Considering all the above, you could make a case for any of the above skaters. But with Aliev's strong comeback in the Russian Cup - and 2020 Nats and Euros wins - I think he's the frontrunner for the other Worlds spot. Gummenik also makes a good case for himself when you combine the earlier part of the season with his results here.

I wouldn't be unhappy with any of the choices and just hope they can somehow get three spots for the Olympics and next year's Worlds because I think they have a lot of promising talent.

Russia’s goal should be to keep the 2 spots they have already and if they get lucky get the a 3 spots. The duo of Aliev + Kolyada can get that job done.

The duo of Semenko + Kolyada doesnt give much confidence in getting even 2 spots. With Semenenko having zero international reputation means low PCS even with a clean program. If Russia wants to YOLO the 2nd spot, Semenenko wouldnt even be my first choice. Kodranyuk or even Mozalev will be a better bet.

Honestly, I don't really see Russia being guaranteed /likely to get 3 spots in men's with any combination of skaters. They have strong competition from the USA and Japan. Also from the French, Canadian, and Korean skaters being sent. They have Kolyada who will be in the top 6/7 ( unless he goes back to his old self). He might make it into the top 5 but it will depend on clean performances. The other men are all wild cards. For the most part, they don't have the PCS or consistency to score high enough to get 3 spots. Personally, I like Mark the most but any skater could end up from 6 to 13 so it is all a gamble. I imagine RF will just send Semenko.

Yeah, they're best off just aiming to keep 2 spots for now (if by a miracle they get 3, then good). No sense stressing the guys out with unrealistic expectations. The competitive condition of many other countries' skaters is basically a mystery so it's well nigh impossible to judge how this year's Worlds, and by extension the 2022 Olympics, will pan out.

Looking towards 2026, amazingly Gumennik, Mozalev, Kondratiuk, Semenenko and Danielian are all still teenagers. If they get consistent within the next year or so, and providing they don't retire, I think Russia could hold 3 spots for much of the next Olympic cycle (especially with Hanyu likely gone, Chen debatable). Aliev and Ignatov would be around Kolyada's age by 2026 so definitely in the mix too. Not sure if Samarin can hold his own by then, since most of the now-teens have better skating skills and performance ability. There might be new kids on the block too (Kutovoi maybe?)

Assuming Hanyu isn't going to Worlds, Kolyada has a chance at a medal (he has chance anyways, but Chen will probably win with no Hanyu and then Shoma, Aymoz, Jin and Kolyada will probably battle for remaining two podium Positions. If Jason comes with a quad, then he also is podium threat if others make mistakes.

I mean, you never know with Kolyada, but he definitely has a chance for podium. Depends solely on himself for that.

Hanyu isn't going? Is that true? Interesting. Anyway, Kolyada could definitely challenge for the podium. His skating is absolute quality. However, he needs to be clean. While I hope he is, I have some doubts he will be.

Looks like the team was announced Kolyada and Semenko. No surprises.

Sorry I was incorrect (I was going based on before when he said he wouldn't be competing at all throughout the season)

He announced, at the end of August, that he would skip the "Grand Prix" season, nothing more.
Of course there were speculations but nothing else from him.
And his two new programs at Nationals rather seem to show his determination to go to Worlds.
Of course he may change his mind but at the moment, nothing such is said.

They didn’t announced substitutes 🥺 as much as I am heart-broken for Mozalev’s second half of this season, and as much as I adore Aliev, I feel Semenenko was the best they had at that point...

Fingers crossed that the next season would be kinder to the Russian men, and that Kolyada-Semenenko get the job of keeping 2 spots done.

They can do it!

We should send messages of support! (Sometimes I think the Russian men don't get enough love these days - I'm guilty of it as well - they're doing super difficult content after all).

Goooo Mika and Zhenya S! :cheer2:
