I like it when athletes like Keegan, who could have WD due to skate situation, but, still go for it, and deliver at Nationals only to solidify their position even more. I just feel like it was a move by Eric and Vanessa to preserve their spot because if they didn’t move up in the standing and finished 4th, that would have damaged their reputation. But, Radford and James are solid as they are the better option not just for the individual event, but, also the team event. If Canada decides to split one of the other disciplines instead, and use one pair, I think I would now choose KMT over Radford and James.
if vanessa and eric had wanted to preserve their spot, they could have stayed home... much easier... they tried.. they realised they didn't have it in them... they didn't want to risk an injury... it's much much more dangerous when you are lifting and throwing someone... and keegan didn't have to skip two weeks of practice... regarding the team event, MTM really have a twist issue and for the short program, that could cost a medal to Canada.

I really think it is being unfair to Vanessa and Eric in stating they withdrew to just preserve their spot. They came here (a risk in itself with so little training under their belts), even knowing having little training, they did their SP and I for one saw there were difficulties in the 'strength' demandments. Eric especially has shown before this season that when there's danger (dropping Vanessa for example) he stays on the cautious side and will rather not do a lift/twist/whatever than do it and risk causing a dangerous fall. And with lifts falls are very, very scary. I'm certain he would rather withdraw than take such a risk. And, considering how it went yesterday, and that they're still recovering, I get it totally. I don't 'get' why people even think they did it to just preserve their spot. I think their own health and the risks at stake were a much more important reason. I haven't asked them of course (so I am also speculating) but considering the fact that they did show up here - and I thought that was pretty brave - shows me that they had wanted to fight for the spot themselves.

exactly... if we look at lori-ann and thierry who also had training compromised when lori-ann tested positive, in the SP they crashed on the twist... and had another not so good twist in the LP. There is no joking with pairs elements.

Athletes should never be criticized for prioritizing their own health and safety. Especially in sports where one mistake can cause serious injury.

As for the second spot, WM skated well but even with domestic scoring, they didn’t beat JR’s seasons best. They would somehow have to even improve a lot on this skate to match JRs potential. It sucks about covid but I don’t think missing one tournament should negate a whole season of results.

But who knows what will happen between now and the Olympics. Covid is unpredictable. Gogolev only found out he was positive because of random airport testing. It makes you wonder how many other people could be positive there and not know it. I just hope Canada has a healthy team to send in a month.

All valid points and I agree with all of you 80%. But, there is a 20% side of me that has now joined the dark side with Duhamel, where I’m sad that the #2 team before this season, is now going to miss out of an Olympic opportunity and experience and to me it would have just gone down better had they lost their spot losing to James and Radford at Nationals. That is all. Also, I’ve switched to supporting KMT as Canada’s best pairs team after this competition.

LOL at the dark side... it's funny as I wasn't a fan of the new team when it was announced... their skating made me move from the obscure side to the bright side of the force... :)

I have often said that WM were team number 2 in Canada because of early retirements, injuries and bad luck from other contenders... to me, they have always been place holders. They have been given quite a lot of time, right away when they came out of juniors to develop, and I do not see much improvement... they still have the easier throws, the lifts are still iffy... they landed the jumps this time but all season they doubled the salchow... so I am actually hoping for Trennt to team up with a new partner. Evelyn is nice and all but she is a bit too tall for a guy who is shorter than I am (I have seen them in person and was shocked at how short he was compared to some of the other pair male skaters)

HaHa! I didn’t know Trennt was so short. He is cute though 🤪 and I support your idea to have Trennt team up with a new partner. Maybe, it should have been Trennt with Vanessa to begin with, considering Eric had retired. My experience was the opposite. I was so excited about the Radford and James reunion as to me Radford and James were the two artistic members from their original pairings and i was really happy these two reunified when the news first broke out. I was seeking a team that could challenge and break up the domination of four Russian Pairs and two Chinese pair teams. Also, Eric is from that Canadian golden era that I really miss. I miss Patrick Chan, Kaetlyn Osmond, Meaghan Duhamel and Virtue & Moir. So, I was ecstatic to have Eric back to represent that era. But, now, my opinion, as of today, has changed.

Also, funny enough, the new Japanese pair, coached by Duhamel/Bruno family team, has turned out to be the team that broke into the top 6 and I fell in love with them, after barely noticing them the previous year. Now that I’m a fan of this new team, I secretly want all three of their teams at the Olympics instead.

well.. i'd say, it takes time to get artistry out from a newly form pairs team... they are doing better than I thought they would for such a short period of time. I prefer the Julie Marcotte/ Ian Connolly teams as they have more interesting elements and programs than the Bruno Marcotte teams, though I like the Japanese team.... if you are hoping that a Canadian team challenges the Russian and Chinese pairs, WM will not be that team ever.:)

So mean to my poor team WM. Are you sure you are not part of the dark side? 🤪

But, yes, I would rather now have WM finish at 12th in the Olympics, like they did at 2021 Worlds, over JR finishing in 9th or 10th at Olympics in 2022 😈

Apparently Tracy Wilson has tested positive for covid. She’s currently with Jason at US nationals but they only arrived 2 days ago. This makes me a little nervous that she may have been exposed while at TCC and with all those at TCC members at Canadian nationals with no testing… ugh I so worried for the whole national team.

The way it's going around right now, unfortunately there are probably multiple people that have been unknowingly exposed. We just need to hope there isn't a breakout

Looking over some of the junior pairs, the new team Homick/Haubrich seem like ones to watch in the future. Another young team with a really nice twist; they only did double jumps and throws, but the paired elements all looked pretty nice, and she especially is charismatic.
