Alysa didn’t even have the highest GP score among the Americans this season.
Don't forget Alysa holds the highest score this season. CS Lombardia 219. :)

Either way, Alysa or Bell is a better choice for the team event. USA team beat Japan team just by 2 points, I think. Is that right?

Imagine.... if the pair team lost to Japan and ice skating team lost to Russia, team USA could be in third place behind Japan.

Alysa couldn't do the team event because she had CoVid, which kept her out of Nationals and also kept her off the ice for a time. She had to wait until the virus was completely out of her body before traveling to Beijing, so no team event for her.

But I could not understand why Karen was assigned to the Team Event when Mariah had done much better on the GP and also was US Champion. And that decision was made early on (Karen was told right after Nationals). Karen had been getting more <s than Mariah, and was getting them on more jumps; Karen's team performances were embarrassing......5th in the SP and 4th in the FS. It's a good thing the US won the Men and Team Dance events and was 3rd in the Pairs SP.

I think embarrassing is way too harsh, but yeah. eta: Also, Mariah tested positive after Nationals, too, as had Brandon Frazier during Nationals, and Brandon did do the team event, so I'm not sure covid was the issue - though it could have been.

Ah I was confused I remembered Alysa scoring higher than Mariah did all season but it was not a GP event. Still overall point well taken.

It's hard to compare scores between two different competitions. Some competitions have very tough judge panel with Shin Amano works as a judge (forgot which competition, believe it's CS Finland trophy) and some competitions have more lenient judge panel (Skate America, Olympics team event).

The best way to compare scores are to put all skaters in the SAME competition with the SAME judge panel. Based on Olympics result, we finally conclude that

#1 Alysa
#2 Mariah
#3 Karen

In reality, any one of them don't change the team event result. USA wins team event GOLD. Karen is ultimate hero by claiming 3 Olympics spots for USA. I'm ok that she takes away the team event medal at the end. :)

I'm SO PROUD of Mariah and her walker getting out there at her ancient age and creating an Olympic moment. Regardless of placements to me that was the skate of the day. That's what a woman skating looks like and that's what I want to see. Alysa skated beautifully as well but a skate like Mariah's takes life experience. Just stunning. Congrats to all the US ladies.

Alysa’s pure joy during these entire Olympics was a bright light to what was to me, the most traumatizing and horrific sporting event I’ve ever seen. I loved her entire mindset throughout the entirety of these games. I’m so glad she was able to have the best time along with her friends like Young and Yelim.

I’m so happy Alysa had a fairytale of an Olympic experience and accomplished her biggest dream. I can’t express how happy I am to see her love of skating back. I hope this experience motivates her to continue skating and to strive to come back in another 4 years. However, even if she does choose to end her carrier after this season and go to college, I’m just glad she’s leaving on the best note possible ❤️

🙄🤨😒 Here we go with the let’s remove the defending 4th place finisher…..posts

I have read an article that she is going back to Cornell soon. I won't be surprised that Karen is retiring and this Olympics could be her last competition. Also, I'm guessing both Karen and Mariah are going to skip Skate America GP this fall. I doubt both Karen and Mariah continue to stick around for another season.

That is interesting 🤔

I hope she tries one more time. I know she can do so much better. If she does retire, she might retire at the top, with an Olympic gold medal 🥇, if Russia gets disqualified 😳

I'm pretty sure Karen is retiring. I just don't know when. Is she retiring after this Olympics or World Championship?

Mariah is 25. I doubt there's another Olympics in her future.
I just hope Bradie's injury heals and that she'll be back next season. The US needs her!!

The ISU age limit rise proposal gives one more year of juniors to go senior before it's frozen for 2 years. My first thought was that this is very good for USFSA (perhaps they proposed it) as it lets Isabeau into seniors next season. I'm looking forward to seeing her progress.

So no surprise that the best US lady this season finishes the highest in the individual event while the weakest of the 3 US ladies is the one with the silver medal.
Basically - for better or worse - I see this as a “thank you” lifetime achievement award from USFS to her for getting them 3 Ladies spots for 2 Olympics.

Is this fair? Well… I’ll leave that question open. What’s happened has happened.
