I watched the live stream and also the practice before it. Just as an FYI, Jessica had her team USA jacket on during the practice. As far as scoring, I thought the catch on the triple twist for C/J was a little off, still bigger than the others but could explain “only 4s.” Jessica’s triple sal was downgraded, so only got points for a double plus negative GOE. Also, I am not sure how Jessica landed that throw, she was so tilted I thought her side was going to hit first, very impressive save by her! Her spin looked a little labored as well, and usually they have beautiful side by side spins. I thought for a first outing in a long time they looked good and they were clearly thrilled when they finished!I saw the SP live. The novice and junior pairs were fun to watch as well, in terms of getting to see their growth and development.
Juniors:
Baram/ Tioumentsev 54.31
Fleming/ Finster 52.47
Novice:
Olivia Mendoza
Aiden Elswich 23.42
Anna Yau
John Gormley 23.34
The judging to me seems a bit low for the senior pairs here. I know it's early in the season, and the athletes should be stronger as they become more comfortable over the course of the season. Still, I'd love an explanation for some of the scoring, especially from Judge 4 who scored everyone the lowest scores in PCS categories.
I knew C/J should have the highest score on their 3-twist, which is so effortless, and one of the highest and best in the world. All the judges gave 4 to C/J on that element. There should have been some 5s too, but apparently judges are being conservative.
While Liu/O'Shea got a 3, two 2s and two 4s on their 3-twist, I think L/O should probably receive mainly 3s at this point on their 3-twist, and I wouldn't argue with 2s for L/O. I disagree with the last two judges giving 4s for L/O and C/J on 3-twist. There's no question that C/J's 3-twist is better. So if those judges feel L/O deserve 4s, then they should have given C/J 5s.
I point this out as an example of poor judging. What are they looking at? The judging is uneven and mostly inconsistent, particularly when examining the point-by-point breakdowns.
I agree with L/O in first, but the scores seem off in different categories. I agree with C/J having overall better PCS, because they are fast, have excellent SS, and possess a synchronicity and a comfort level with each other that L/O are still developing. I can see the scores close, but C/J had more obvious miscues on their sbs jump and throw. I was surprised to see Jess not land her throw jump with greater confidence. That's not usual for her. Whatever C/J's personal adversity setback, it must have impacted their training. They look like they are still working things through. Good luck to them. They are a quality team.
And it's great to see L/O looking so good as a newly paired team. I would have L/O a bit higher in the the marks, by at least another point. Chelsea still has to work on getting her free leg out of the way on landings. This is such a great program for L/O, and they clearly enjoy skating it.
In general, all the PCS are low in some categories. Some conservative scoring across-the-board, and questionable in a number of areas.
I thought McBeath/ Bartholomay were good but they don't have great speed. Still, their overall performance value is wonderful. They just need more confidence and experience with each other, particularly with Katie being new to pairs.
I thought I would bring this very interesting interview of Alexa and Brandon to the newer US Pairs thread. Thanks, Tatiana, for posting it.

In the spotlight: Alexa Knierim & Brandon Frazier (USA) successfully opened a new chapter. The end of one chapter is the beginning of a new one. This is certainly true for U.S. Pair Skaters Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier, who started their career as a team a little over a year ago after their...www.isu.org
Most exciting news to me is that Shae-Lynne Bourne has choreographed their SP to House of the Rising Sun. This sounds dramatic and edgy and I can already imagine Alexa and Brandon, how they will be skating to it!
Their other musical choice, "Fix Me" for the FS, seems strange. Well, I have a disconnect with it. I don't see it. I have to admit that I wasn't completely sold on their "Fall on Me" last year, until they explained in an interview why they chose it. So maybe the same thing will happen with this FS, although I'd wish for a musical choice they didn't have to explain. And it's possible I'll feel differently the first time I see it skated. They will debut it at Cranberry, according to the article.

Thanks for the correction. I've corrected my post. I was thinking "Fix You" and even hearing the music in my head ... so that's what I thought I meant. Thought I was talking about.^^ Thanks to you @skylark for posting the article link here. The interview was initially posted in last season's U.S. Pairs thread, apparently by mistake.
I would have thought 'Fix Me' for their sp and 'House of the Rising Sun' for their free skate, but what do I know?! LOL
So I checked, and here are YouTube links to K/F's music:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncd_cMZnC3I Fix Me (I guess this is it)
Seemingly, the main lyric refrain spoke to both of them
I'm fine in the fire
I feed on the friction
I'm right where I should be
Don't try to fix me
Uh, nope. I just read the article. K/F are skating to Coldplay's 'Fix You.'I still like those 'Fix Me' lyrics for K/F, and for that matter for all U.S. Pairs teams.

L/O had another good outing. Their SBS jumps were clean, though Chelsea’s was tight on the landing. They also had some two footing on the throw, though I thought it was better than there first competition. The main thing that hurt them was a base on their death spiral. As they get more comfortable with each other, I’m sure they will continue to improve. Both teams have beautiful, innovative lifts. As long as the judging is conservative across all the teams, it’s not really questionable. If they are all being judged by the same standard then even if the scoring is low (or high like at Nationals) it’s fair in terms of placements. I would rather them be harshly judged here then think everything is okay and get a rude awakening under an international panel!
I thought all 3 teams performed well today! What a treat to have all these live streams available. Good luck to all 3 in the long!
I would like to see McBeath/Bartholomay get the TBD, if C/J aren't ready or can't compete for some reason internationally.Skate America TBD spot contendors score comparison-

I really need to state my wishes boldly in black and white more often! LOL. Here is Chelsea and Danny's SP from Glacier Falls, which is showing so much promise and excitement. (not forgetting that they elected not to perform their FS there.) I think Chelsea is showing stronger with the jumps in each outing, and she's really working to get the throw landings. That can be such a challenge, to match techniques and power balance with a new partner. It seems to me that the man's throw has to have such a delicate balance to it: forceful enough to get her high and far, and gentle enough that she can land it. Here's Lover.Wish there were videos, but we can hope for more soon.![]()
Very much a Beauty and the Beast look about them! Jessica's costumes are always so beautiful, and the colors are perfectly chosen for her. There's something ethereal about her and her skating.Still wondering what Calalang and Johnson's FP music is. If it was posted already I must have missed it.
ETA: Just saw the free program. I think their music is very interesting - certainly sending a message. I thought they looked a little rusty although still very smooth. I think these two have good chemistry. Jessica has a very nice style about her and Brian is a beast with his strength.
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!USFS has added Calalang/Johnson's names back to the ISP list.
