2021 Cranberry Cup International

Gabby 😭
Looks like it will be a battle of technical vs. Artistry. Alysa Liu versus Mariah Bell. Also, the spot for Skate America between Ryberg and Shin. Rooting for Liu and Ryberg. I have a feeling Glenn, You and Izzo will have redemption skates tomorrow. Also, Gracie Gold was way over scored. She should definitely be in the last group with that skate. I think she was the only skater with no triple jumps and she just looks so depressed out there. Judges must have saved with with the PCS score.

It was fun! Hope for free comebacks from Young and Amber!!! Just checked, and wow. The PCS were so low. Audrey got 30.06 (a literal crime). So surprised Mariah got 30.96, but what's what she deserves for this ugly program, ditch it, girl! You Young got 28.48 omg. Alysa got 31.80, which I think is a good score for her.

From technical standpoint, Alysa was clean. Mariah was clean too, but I'm not that sure about her 3T. It was UR on 3F for Audrey :( Also StSq3. Wtf, there was no StSq4 today haha

Probably not her final costume. I think it's lovely though. I feel this is not Olympic worthy at all. I would have loved to see her do something classical. She obviously enjoys this type of program. I think she is better than what Rippon has done to her!!

I´m always a bit confused by Mariahs music choices. It looks like it´s either very messy and speed up music cuts or Celine Dion-type of songs. Right now I would rather see her skate to Celine Dion than this SP. I clearly have another taste in music then her, but I give it to her she really enjoys whatever she is skating too.

I really hope that is not her final costume

I'm in the front row, a few comments:

Alysa's program is electrifying! Srsly, she is a firecracker and her gestures are more refined and polished. Great strategy to choose to remain clean with the 2A for now.

I was 2 meters close from where Young You landed her 3A on her warm-up but fell on that same spot in her program. She has clearly a mental barrier because I could see that her arms got a bit tense and her face was a bit worried as she was starting her jump. She is one of those skaters that has it but has to break her own mental wall to do it.

Amber is really quite powerful. For the sake of giving her time to polish her jumps, I wouldn't send her to Nebelhorn. It seems to me that sometimes she has problems guiding the strenght of her jumps across her planned trajectory. Not sure how to correct that. Again, she is very powerful.

Mariah was good, maybe this is an unpopular opinion but she was slower compared to Alysa. She has a very exciting way of jumping where the vertical line across her center of gravity is VERY tilted (honestly, more tilted than what is necessary in many jumps) and yet she lands them. It's very exciting to watch but at the same time this gives her problems if she is not in her A-game (like in her practice).

Since it's the ladies, I only had it on background (sorry:) although it is cool to have a comp in my timezone, can't wait for the guys tonight(y))

Watching with one eye, I think Alysa was the best both in technical and presentation. Mariah, you are a sweetheart, but you are not Adam and you are not Denali and you need a program that is *you*.

ETA: and agree with others, this rink looks gorgeous, wow! And good job with safety protocols,)

Marilena KITROMILIS (Cyprus) earned the minimum SP TES for Worlds
Tara PRASAD (India) earned the minimum SP TES for 4 Continents
Wow, that´s so nice!

After watching Tara skate today, I checked her on Rink results. It seems she only had one senior comp before in Mentor cup in Torun in 2020, where she scored 28 points. Before that she only competed in novice, so she never skated in juniors?? Look like she had a 5 years break after novice, and returned straight to seniors?

So it´s a very big leap and achievement to go from that to 46.47 in her second senior event ever, and earning the SP TES for 4 continents! That´s incredibly impressive. She must have good nerves and be very hard working. I love skaters like her!

Yes confusing it is. Pretty sure it's not her final costume!! Training outfit. Got the figure for it. I sort of feel she is being moulded into something she isn't. She seems to have settled for fun. Wish her well. What is her FS music do we know?

I really, really love Alysa's SP this year. I'm in love with the dramatic yet fun orchestral music. And the SS and performance were all really good. I'm excited to see what a clean program with a 3A looks like from her. Audrey, too, looked fantastic, considering she's coming back from a stress fracture. I think she's only had a little over a month back on the ice since her injury, so I'll take 1 UR.

Mariah's program was one of my least favorites of the day. It was so hyped up and fell so flat. The music cuts and choreography just don't hit home, and the performance felt really empty. I think Mariah needs to find music that she really likes instead of trying to manufacture performance through pop programs. It just won't be the same if your heart isn't in it. I did like Young You's program. I feel she's a real victim of lack of ice time and competition opportunity, so hopefully she'll bring back her consistency and jumps during this season. I wasn't a fan of Amber's program, but she looked like she was having a blast. Gracie, on the other hand... :(

I'm really excited for the men's short! Hopefully the stream holds up!

Just checked the program thread, she is skating to Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell in her FS, choreo by Shae-Lynn Bourne. I´m very excited to see that, if it works it can be really nice, and I think it will be a good match for Mariah style!

The skater from India was very good, and it's nice to see diverse countries represented.

Amber Glenn went for the triple-axel, but didn't quite manage it, and apparently lost focus, with some minor glitches thereafter that took her out of the top standings. Amber should/ could be in first place in this field, IMO. Hopefully, Amber comes back in the fp and puts out a strong, clean program. I don't disagree with her going for the 3-axel here. When she missed it and stumbled out on the landing, she should have cleared her head and skated the rest of her program the way she can, and the judges would have given her due credit. Not doing a 3/3 combo hurt the most, along with the probable downgrading and deductions on the 3-axel, plus I believe double-footing on another landing.

Gracie looks to be in great shape physically, but as usual, her mental game is lacking. Alysa looks strong and confident, with her lovely, refreshing smile. Jeremy and Massimo have been working wonders with her style, SS, and presentation skills. Kudos! I don't care about Alysa trying to land quads and triple-axels with URs. Just stay steady and continue building. I missed Paige Rydberg's performance. She's been a capable performer in the past, with a good triple-toe/ triple-toe combo and clean skating. I'm not sure that she's held up as well over two programs. I think Heidi Munger performed beautifully, but without a 3/3 combo, so she wasn't scored as high as she seemingly should be, especially on presentation. She doesn't have any political backing.

I wondered how Kailani Craine might fare after scoring well in the sp at Glacier Falls, though less well in the fs. She's a lovely skater, but the technical aspects aren't her strong suit. Maybe Kailani would fare better in ice dancing, or even pairs. I didn't see all of Mariah's performance (the glitches in the stream are really annoying, so I was trying to find another browser, but Google Chrome appears to be the best, even with the stuttering; some other browsers simply blank out trying to refresh the stream -- why can't they get it together on the technical end???!!!)

They really better not mess up the senior pairs and senior men's events this evening!

Yes, the little bit I did see struck me as others trying to push a persona onto Mariah that really isn't who she is. Mariah needs to take charge and come with something more authentically true to herself, and not allow others outside of her to frame her skating personality as a hyped-up rad diva type. It was okay to experiment that one season with the Britney Spears Work B* track. But now, let's allow Mariah to define her true on-ice personality! Please!

Mariah deserved to win 2020 U.S. Nationals. End of. Trying to pump her up and hype her up the following season in order to crown her after-the-fact failed horribly! Just judge fairly to begin with, and let skaters breathe and do their thing without favoritism, and/ or a sh*t-load of pressure caused by manufactured hype. The realness was Mariah's 2020 U.S. Nationals performance, which U.S. judges decided not to reward in favor of continuing to over-reward a young, still developing Alysa Liu. Enough already.

I'm glad the over-hype, over-management, and growth pressures have not tanked Alysa's free-spirited joy and desire.

Cranberry Cup Women SP Top 10
1 Alysa Liu 71.42
2 Mariah Bell 67.07
3 Paige Rydberg 63.75
4 Audrey Shin 62.18
5 Young You 59.74
6 Madeline Schizas 59.70
7 Amber Glenn 59.59
8 Marilena Kitromilis 57.93
9 Heidi Munger 56.31
10 Shan Lin 52.28

Alysa Liu and Mariah Bell made a strong comeback with SP scores of 71.42 and 67.07, respectively. Alysa Liu's opening 3A looked clean but the live video slowed down momentarily during the opening jump. This tournament has a lot of big name skaters, including Gracie Gold (44.94).

Since Mariah started working with Adam it seems she is skating his programs and style, not hers. The heavy pop songs simply don't match her more lyrical movements and line.

I agree that the programs don't necessarily match her style, but 1 thing I will say to her credit is that she looks like she's having fun and/or trying to sell the program.
