Did you watch Nationals?
Kaiya didn't skate well in the SP. She did brilliantly in the LP but Maddie did enough and does deserve better PCS marks. I think Kaiya has more potential but she needs to work on her spin levels and overall presentation. She is entertaining and full of joy, but she will do better when she will add more depth to her presentation.
I don't think it was a "wuzrobbed" moment.
Yes, I did watch Nationals. Kaiya's SP wasn't great, but her FS was much, much better than Madeline's. All season, Madeline has delivered a decent SP, but has had subpar freeskates. It doesn't matter if the SP was clean if the FS is full of errors like flubbing the opening jump combination, falls and doubled triples. It's the FS which ultimately determines the final standing in a competition.

Kaiya lost a lot of points with lower levels and a q on her combo in the SP.

Then in the LP, she rightfully won it. But again, she could have made up some more points with higher levels on spins and steps.

Maddie doubled her flip and made some minor mistakes BUT, she did hold it together... and didn't open up the door enough for Kaiya to win it. Maddie had a near 10 point gap.. That's pretty hard to catch up to, especially when one is at a small deficit with levels, goe and PCS.

I think the scores are quite honest here... It's not like judges gave Maddie PCS candy : she didn't score anything in the nines.. judges scored them quite closely especially considering Kaiya skated so early.

I disagree that the SP doesn't matter... when it counts for about one third of the total score. It is for a reason we often hear : you cannot win it with the SP but certainly lose it there.... Ask Gogolev about it... he will confirm it.

The Skate Canada site use to list International Assignments. I can't seem to find a list anywhere any more. Am I missing something? Can't even find anything confirming Conrad is going to worlds.

His skating club announced it yesterday. I guess they were told by Skate Canada about the selection.

Edit: on Skate Canada website, you need to go on "Events" section. Then on "Event Schedule". Then scroll down until the row for 2023 Worlds. There Orzel is listed along with the others now

It's there. Events, International.

As a reminder, Canadian Novice Nats are being held today (February 19) and tomorrow (February 20). All information, including live stream and live scoring, can be found on the event website.

I want to implore particularly the ice dance enthusiasts among you all to go back and enjoy the wonderful pattern dances (Paso Doble and Viennese Waltz) of what looks to be another strong developing generation of young Canadian Ice Dancers, and, of course, enjoy the wonderful, technically in-depth commentary of Kaitlyn Weaver.
In particular, I would recommend rewatching the top 4 teams (Chung/Mackenzie, Mentha/Deveau, Cinçon-Debout/Celestino and Carandiuc/Carandiuc who unfortunately had issues with her costume in the Viennese Waltz pattern dance).

Just watched This and That's recap of the CAN Nationals. I usually don't watch it cause they rant on too much about nothing and are really down on Skate Canada. But this one had Meagan D on so I watched. Meagan was very vocal about Fiona. She really likes her and was very upset that she has only been sent out to one JR international. Loved it when Meagan put Dave in his place when he mentioned the CAN Fed putting pressure on the skaters.

Yes. I love Meagan Duhamel. She is my favourite guest cause she is so blunt. She is not everyone’s cup of tea. Sounds like she isn’t Ted’s cup of tea with her bluntness. But, she is definitely mine. Regarding Fiona, she absolutely nailed and pinpointed issues with Skate Canada’s lack of common sense with sending their ladies to international competitions. I also enjoyed the part where she added that Deanna and Maxime need to practice 3S and that they should have done it in this competition. Also, love when she added that they need to add a third jump in their combo… she is right…. Even adding a 1A will give them that extra 1-2 points that might make a difference in a competition like Psss… a worlds bronze medal. The Japanese senior and Junior pairs teams are in good hands at this camp.

Also, this is my first time this year, watching Novice competitions at Challenge event and this event, and prior to 2023, I was completely oblivious to who competes at these events. I always pictured mostly 12-13 year old athletes, prior to going over to Juniors, so, it was kind of a shock to me, to also see a lot of 15-16 year olds at this event.

I’m looking forward to all the free skates today.

Dance - Charlotte and Axel are the class of the event. Clear front runners. But, the battle for silver and bronze between the next three teams, intrigues me.
Pairs - Alexane and Charly improved from the last event. Clear gold medalists. Beau and Benjamin tried a new lift in the SP. They are attempting to try it again in the free skate. Why not? They are by themselves in silver medal position. I love seeing the small improvements these team make, to garner more points. The battle for bronze is interesting. But, the AB team should be good enough to garner this podium spot over the rest of the field.
Womens - Lots of girls to watch out for. The most talented is Mely. She had a lovely 3T 3T, but, singled her 2A. She has the most potential and since Skate Canada only sends girls that have triple triple combos to Junior Grand Prix circuit, she is the only one from this group of ladies to potentially be sent to one of these events. Winning Novice should help her resume. I think I’m rooting for her. Ashley Dinh is leading after SP. She led after SP at challenger event, but, had a meltdown in the free skate. Interested to see how good she is, after this event. Lucille is a threat as she climbed over ten spots in the challenger event after SP. Here, she is in third and within striking distance. I don’t like her as much as she has small jumps. Gabrielle, in 13th place, is the Challenger winner. So, I expect her to climb in the standings. Ones to watch, Martina (love her Madonna program) and Calissa, they don’t have the jumping arsenal, but, I love their expression and engagement to the music of their programs
Men - David Howes is the class of the field. He has good artistry. I’m hoping he lands most of his jumps to score at least higher than the ladies (top two at Challenger were at 130 and wouldn’t have podiumed against the ladies despite having PCS advantage). The men for the most part are subpar. This is the category that worries me the most for Canada moving forward in this and next Olympic cycle.

I am sure that Josée Picard, DSD's coach, knows all about BV and improving on it... She was pushing S/B to do their 3loops back then.
The thing is that Deanna and Max have done a lot of ground work this year. I think it's important to recognize what they have done already as there will always be something to work on.
This year : they have revamped their SBS 3t entries so it makes the jumps in synch. They have learned a new death spiral with a special pivot which is the hardest and highest BV for a DS. They have reworked their lifts to make sure they get level 4s instead of level 3s as they did earlier this season. They are stabilising the throw triple flip. And yes, the plan is to include the 3s as they attempted at 4CC.

Is it enough? Perhaps not yet... I agree it would be nice for them to take advantage of the 2a sequence opportunities... even if it meant to do a 2s-2a-2a (served Chan and Howe quite well). However, some skaters do not like the axel jump... Do we even know if it's an option for them??? I could tell Meagan that it would have been nice for them to do a triple triple combo... she didn't have one but Eric did... and she would have answered, well I wanted to do a triple loop jump but Eric didn't have one :)

So it's always easy to say what teams could do but do we really know what is available to them... Some skaters do not have enough flow for 3 jump combos.

Finally, I do agree on the principle though... Meagan and Eric did include their new elements early every season... and then, kept what was working for them and nixed the others (like the 3a throw)... and that's what allowed Meagan to land that crazy 4s throw at the olympics and secured their medals...

In an ideal world, Deanna and Max would indeed include a 3 jump combo... they would also nail all their elements and get more PCS and GOE :)

Yes. True that I’m not sure what this team has in their arsenal… that is why I want to see something. Any jump, even if it is just a 1A. I don’t want to just see two jumps…. I need a third and not leave points on the table, that is why I mentioned the 1A as they should at least have this one jump. 2A is ideal… but, I understand that axel isn’t everyone fave jump. That is why I added 1A instead of 2A, as you don’t need much flow to be able to add on a single axel. To not even try, mind boggles me. I will be upset if Canada loses the bronze medal by one-two points.

We have had a few discussions about combos ;) regarding men etc.... I trust skaters know better than we do... about what will give them more GOE... BV is something, but what matters is not always what you do but how you do it.

A recent interview with Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud

For me, the most surprising thing in this article is the assertion that Trennt changed partners because Evelyn decided to retire. That's not the impression I got from her statement at the time.

Other interesting factoids: Trennt coaches a lot and Lia is still in high school, though she technically graduated but is doing an extra year. That is not uncommon in Ontario, for students headed for college/university. When Ontario eliminated grade 13 from high school, they came up with a program that is technically 4-years, but in practice more like 4.5 years, for higher-education-bound students.

I thought the same thing about the comments about Evelyn's retirement. Anyway as a non Canadian, I was a bit confused about Lia's comments about still going to high school even though she graduated so thank you for clarifying!
