Also, I wonder if the coaching situation change has been impacting Rino as well?

She seemed to have more "spark" when Mihoko Higuchi was still in Yamada's team.. Maybe she should consider moving back to Mihoko?
But I hope it's just the illness affecting her.

Ah skating gods, what other sacrifice do you need from me to release Rino from this curse 😭

Saki Miyake making it to the Japanese Nats final group is not in my bingo card 😅

I'm so happy for her though, I really enjoyed her skating tonight!

At the moment, I guess the people that have "qualified" for consideration for Worlds are Mai Mihara (World ranking, top 2 Japanese finisher at Grand Prix finals), Rinka Watanabe (World ranking, top two 2 Japanese finisher at Grand Prix finals) and Kaori Watanabe (World ranking).

Since Mao Shimada is too young, I guess Chiba Mone is the one most in need of a podium finish? Or would she not even be considered regardless on account of being a junior (such as the case of Kawabata in 2020)?

Assuming that either Kaori or Mai wins this, hard to come up with another third at this point. So I guess Rinka backs her way in regardless of how she does here? Hell, even Saki Miyake has a chance at this point, though I guess she'd have to get her minimum TES somewhere before going.

The nightmare scenario is a Sakamoto-Mihara-Shimada podium, with Rinka completely falling apart and finishing like 14th or so, but still having to go to World's simply because no other option exists.

I've been distracted from women's figure skating for so long that now I don't understand what happened to Marin Honda? I don’t remember at all that she succeeded in the entire past Olympic cycle. Hmm... and where is Wakaba?

Wakaba is injured, and probably lacks motivation after having reached her goal of getting to the Olympics. Marin spends too much time on social media and not enough time training.

Maybe. I honestly thought she would go with Higuchi. She should be with her imo.
Girl is so consistent when healthy. But she always have to get injured or ill.

Imo, Mone should go to senior worlds if she she podiums. There is no reason not to give her a chance. Send her to a senior B to get those minima and that's it.
If Saki Miyake finishes in top 6, i expect international assignements for her.

I was planning to start working on some video but keep falling asleep
In case anyone is waiting on video, I'll edit and upload after a nap

I knew it was too much to ask for a clean short. She NEVER skates a clean SP, but I thought she had it this time.
Suprisingly, Yuhana actually skated this SP clean at Regionals (just an edge warning on her 3F)
I was hoping that skate would've helped to break her SP curse but seems it was just a fluke

Oh wow, I didn't realize Mone was old enough to go. She has a great shot! Very exciting for her, tho I feel bad for Mana/Rion/Rinka.

I fell asleep and then woke up in time for the final two flights…..

Kaori & Mai shined…. Clean skates by both of them. I haven’t looked at protocols. But, Shin must have called Kaori’s 3Lz as !, as soon as she landed it, I saw Shin mark it as yellow and that is why he is the best technical specialist. Also, Mai’s 3T was most likely a q and of course Shin saw that 🤓
Did anybody see how happy Kaori was after Mai’s skate? I need these two to go to Worlds together and after the short program, they can leave out an entire combo in the free skate and still place in the top 5.

The third spot was up for grabs and every contender in the final two flights choked…. Lots of bad skates. Mao Shimada will clearly grab a podium spot. Mone Chiba has put herself in a sweet spot to finish 4th here. All she has to do is skate cleanly and she is there. 4CC, Worlds and Jr. Worlds are all within her grasp.

I was so sad watching Rika, Yuhana and Rinka bomb…. The last two skaters Rion and Rino were atrocious with their jumps, but, their artistry is so amazing. I love these two. But, Rion can never land her triples consistently and Rino always appears sick or weak. Such a shame.

Saki - I loved her at Regionals and Sectionals. Her jumps are so big and solid. She really benefited with having Shin as technical specialist. I hope she hangs on to top 6 to get international assignments for next year.

I woke up to the results and was quite surprised to see so many contenders far down in the standings. Seems like a lot of the women had nervous skates. I commented recently that Japan has so many top skaters with "Ri" names - Rika, Rino, Rion and Rinka... sadly it looks like they all struggled in the short. :( Sad to see Hana do poorly as well. Happy for Mone though. Biggest surprise for me in the standings is Saki - good for her!

Anyone have a results list that is in English? The men/dance/pairs have English names when you click the results page, but the women do not.

I was able to play catchup on MujiTV while still waiting for ID from Himawari.
Sorry I dont have time to read all of your thoughts...wish I did...
Did anyone catch what Rika said to Brian Orser when she left the ice? His return was , "Oh really?"

According to this article, her combo jump error was due to her blade getting caught in a hole in the ice that she herself made jumping a 3S during the warm-up:

Someone also observed that she had a loose hair pin or something.

She wants to include the 3Lz in the free, but it's unclear whether it's ready or not.
