Lajoie and Lagha obviously did not get the results they wanted at this competition, but I hope they are not discouraged. I think their programs this season are top notch. I said in the RD thread that I wasn't super excited to hear they were skating to Micheal Jackson for the RD, but I was pleasantly surprised by how well the program worked for them, and the music edit was different enough to seem fresh.

But their free dance is one of the most stunning pieces of art I've ever seen on ice and I hope they don't change a thing. So many brilliant moments in the choreography that literally made me catch my breath while watching. From the spin so beautifully timed to the music like the opening of a rose in the sun, to her catching his foot in the end lift (amazing!). I know they'll get ragged on for doing a lyrical piece, but I hope they ignore the haters. This dance in brilliant. Also her dress is beautiful! Just had to gush a little.

Edited to add: That one foot step sequence! OMG, I'm in love.

Also, great start to the season for Maddie. SP is fire, and seems like she did well in the LP too (I haven't been able to find a video yet). Last season she never seemed to really get her feet under her, and this is already a huge improvement.

I hope they don’t get discouraged. Expectations were for 2nd place.
I need to watch the programs to judge for myself. But, innovation requires risks.

Maddie 🤗 She is not playing this year. She usually stuns after SP and then crumbles after free skate. She is the clear frontrunner for Canada Ladies figure skating. I don’t think any Canadian lady will surpass this 188.88 score this season.

LaLa just messed up on their twizzles, early in both programs but the rest was really high quality for a team at their first event. They are definitely aiming to peak at home worlds and their programs indicates that indeed, this is just the beginning.
I love both of their programs. I hate the music of the FD because it "means' absolutely nothing. But their skating to it is wonderful. I don't think we got to worry about their low place finish this weekend but they better be ready for the GP circuit... they cannot afford to let a bunch of younger and newer teams pass them.

Is the RD made for Zach? I've never seen him so expressive in his movements before? I mean, I'm used to Majorie being the expressive one and Zach a bit bland but in this one it's Zach that steals the show! I don't care about the twizzles or the points, but I really like watching this programme!

Madeline's layout.

I understand she doesn't want to repeat the lutz and flip.. perhaps to remain cleaner.
But then, if she wants to play it safer, she absolutely doesn't need to attempt a 2a-3t in the second half. She could simply do a 3t-+2a, which is much easier and earn the same points.

Yeah, I'm not letting myself get too discouraged for them yet, as this was pretty good in terms of skating for a first time out (after just 2 1/2 weeks — wow!) and their programs are so good this season. It's always worrying when teams you used to beat handily beat you in any competition, whether it's early season or not, and Lajoie and Lagha had the disadvantage of not being able to go to worlds last season (when they surely should have been there). Fear and Gibson have used the strategy of dominating the early season for the last couple of years to help work their way up. Whether I agree with their rise or not, it has been a successful strategy. But I try to remember that the other teams had already had a couple of competitions to smooth out the kinks.

Maddie's FS at Nepela. Watch is soon before it disappears.

I think the SP is a more natural fit for her in terms of style, but this was promising as well. A couple major jump errors (but not falls). She's already way ahead of where she was last season. This is a much better program than West Side Story. 'I Feel Pretty' was just too juvenile. I loved the spiral, wish they'd re-choreograph the step sequence and get rid of the illusion turn exit on the last spin (from the SP as well). Find some other way to get that difficult exit credit. This just looks bad (it does on pretty much all of the skaters that are doing it). I like that it's not a bunch of flailing — they've kept the arms relatively simple, which goes with the music. For a first outing all in all I thought this was very good. I think the maturity of the program alone puts her in a class above Kaiya still.

Maddie’s short program is 🔥
Her free skate is a bit boring. But, I like the fact she is now going for one combo in the second half. She needs to practice that 2A 3T combo though… she wasn’t close to executing this combo.
She doesn’t have to worry about competition in Canada, until one our ladies attains the minimum scores for both SP and LP.
The ladies are doing okay. We have Maddie as top ten contender for Worlds already with a nice bronze medal 🥉 at this event
Kaiya is a fighter…. Silver at Austria, top ten at Junior Worlds, bronze at US event and silver at Autumn
Justine with a bronze at Autumn will do wonders to her confidence
I see these three as the top three Canadian Ladies this season with Fiona splitting her time with pairs. We will see.
Also, our top three Junior Girls all placed 7th at their Jr events. I saw improvements with Kara’s skating skills and I thought Kara, Hetty and Lulu all had top 6 skating skills at their respective events. It will be exciting to see them battle domestically

I’m most concerned about the men. Stephen is the best so far with his technical arsenal based on Autumn Classic. Wesley Chiu is so inconsistent and so is Aleksa. Conrad was definitely disappointing this weekend. He seems to pop his quads and with no quads, his skating skills are mediocre. Really hope Romsky manages to gain mental strength. Cause we need help in this discipline.

I don't think Conrad was that bad this weekend. It was only the salchow of his quads that he popped (the solo 3T has been consistently a 3T in his layout, so it's probably a placeholder for a 4T). It was the triple lutz and loop that he popped in the back half, where he increased the backloading for his combos. He showed a jump layout in the short that was more consistent with what he had at 4CC (including the +3T) and got higher PCS for it, even if he didn't have the same GOE that he got at 4CC. Plus he got the third highest scores for spins in the free as per SkatingScores.

It's probably not what he wanted, but there's room to improve and figure out the issues. I was hoping that he could place top 8 for the WS points, but that wasn't the way the cookie crumbled. It's a better start than he had at Finlandia last year and I'm really impressed with how much he improved his spins.

This is amazing considering that Conrad has never had the best spins. It shows his steady improvement.
I do think the second 3t is a place holder indeed so I am not worried about this one. True as well that he backloaded his combos in the LP. He probably just lacked a bit of stamina/rhythm.

yup... he is always short of the WS points isn't he? I think he just needs more mileage. What impressed me the most is the calm of his blades on the ice. He used to skate a bit like Bambi. He is so much smoother now. His jumping technique is steadier too. It used to be all over the place. I appreciate his constant efforts : it really shows he wants to be better and better.
In the end, just one or two jumps not popped and his ranking at this event would have been much higher. The LP was so messy and the scores are really tight.

I love a man in uniform :) though, when he trips, Lolo in twizzles... I am not too sure my love is intact... Oh wait... on the replay, it looks like it's Lolo who tripped herself :) but of course, Nik was too close. I guess that if the fall had happened just after the first set of twizzles had been completed, they would have at least scored some points.. Invalid element is harsh here.

What a weird and freak and super costly fall... sigh...

I like the program otherwise. Poor Nik, he looked so deflated... Lolo looked much more chill about the mishap.

Oh.. and that lift !!! WOW!
