2023 Four Continents: Info and Pre-game Chat

I've heard that higher elevation makes your jumps easier to rotate because there's less oxygen (and that's why all of the Colorado skaters UR) so maybe there's some advantages there too.
Less oxygen means it's harder to breathe. For those who don't train at that elevation it may be a challenge as they might get winded faster than normal due to the thinner air. The advantages would only be for those who are used to those conditions.

The last time they held a Challenger event in Salt Lake City (elevation 4,300 feet approx.), the skaters had a tough time. They're probably not in top shape in mid-September, but many of them really struggled. I remember the pairs were getting a little scary when so many of them had to abort their lifts...That being said, Colorado Springs is a cool place to visit, and I would definitely make time to see the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame.

Can we yet?

This is my first time being able to go to something like this and i am trying to figure out the timeline. Any help would be appreciated.

Unless you are going to stay in the official hotel i would wait and check what other events will be in the city as well and see if you need to reserve a room asap or if you can wait a week or 2 out and get a great rate

Do we know the official hotel? I am hoping for the Residence Inn as it is walking distance and we want a kitchen.

Also trying to figure out what days are what LOL.

I'm sorry to all the Australians, I know everyone was really looking forward to being able to go to a skating event for once.
How would that work? 🤔 Oxygen content wouldn't affect air resistance because of the ideal gas law (oxygen, nitrogen etc. all behave similarly in terms of density).
That just leaves the physiological effect of altitude acclimatisation, which should actually give an advantage to Colorado skaters competing at lower altitudes, and a disadvantage to skaters in the opposite situation.

Commiserations to all Aussies and fellow Southern Hemisphereans. I guess bureacracy won again...

If I were you, I would reserve a room at Residence Inn, if they have a decent cancellation policy. When the ISU publishes the official document for the competition, it will probably give the name of the official hotel. BTW, I love Residence Inn. Their free breakfast and full kitchen are great.

I’ll guess I’ll go. But I’m sorry to see Australians lose another chance to see 4CC in person. It’s very disapointing especially since so many countries refuse to host it. Aussies showed that they are very supportive audiences in the JGP and great host.

I’m not looking forward to seeing the crash fest during the FS/FD. The altitude there is beastly. That’s why I call it MACS (Monstrous Altitude of Colorado Spring.)

I hope there's a blizzard every day during 4CC Colorado Springs, and I hope the ISU delegates freeze their butts off every day and are reminded every single day that they could have been on the Gold Coast during an Australian summer.

If it was switched to the US, wish they would have picked another city that is not quite so risky in February. Yes, the rink and area is beautiful, except when white-outs, rock slides and avalanches shut down the mountain roads.

There are no mountain roads involved in driving from the Denver and COS airports to the World Arena. If anyone is planning to drive from Vegas or CA, then I-70 in the mountainous central and western parts of the state could be problematic in the winter. Colorado Springs itself is in the foothills.

Does anyone know how accessible the arena for the event is with public transit/on foot? Depending who is coming for 4CC it can be an option for this year for me/mom. But if you have to drive, then nope.

There are hotels within walking distance that border the back end of the parking lot. If you do a street view of the arena, you can see them.

Well, it is what it is. I doubt seriously the ISU has a grudge against Australia and I hope there isn't a blizzard every day. That's just a mean wish when perhaps we don't know all the facts. Colorado isn't any more accessible to me than Australia but any competition is going to land wherever the facilities are prepared for it and willing to host it. The altitude will surely be a factor but there have been other competitions at higher altitudes and people just train accordingly. There are certainly many skaters who train there and they seem to be able to adjust to it. I am really sorry that people are disappointed in this change of venue. As I said, I live in the US and MOST of the competitions are not viable for me so I'm kind of used to it.

A little more hotel info for those who might be interested. My first choice is the Residence Inn, but I thought it looked far away from the arena. Hard to tell. This review sounds good.

Walking distance to Broadmoor World Arena
Review of Residence Inn by Marriott Colorado Springs South
Great location on the south side of the Springs and easy walking distance to the Broadmoor World Arena (about 1 block).
The hotel is standard blue print Residence Inn and a good solid 4+ star rating. Sleeper sofa for the kids was not comfortable. Kitchen had what you needed to make a meal for a family of 4 including nice range/oven and half sized dish washer and full sized refrigerator. Breakfast was good and included bacon or sausage and eggs and potatoes or biscuits and gravy for the days we were there.

Seems like the closest distance I'm seeing is .7 miles from the Hampton Inn. I wonder if it is walkable in terms of traffic. Anybody know?

We walked straight from A to B several years ago. This space is the arena parking lot. Distance is about .3 miles. Lots of others were walking with us. Did not have a fence to negotiate. Hope it is the same next year.
