Hase and Volodin were the clear winners and I really enjoyed their programs! I also really like Miura and Kihara's free skate this year.

What are your thoughts on the Pairs' event?

I really enjoyed watching both the Shorts and Longs of all couples. No quibbles about the outcome either. Sure, there were some mistakes, but on the whole the quality was good. Some nice triple twists as well. Happy to see Elly getting better at the throws. I always worried about that.

Hase/Volodin are a great team and I am glad to see higher presence of personality in their skates. Really disappointed in the number of mistakes the Japanese team did, and if Georgians can bring the fun they consitently show in exhibitions to competion and make this spiral less ugly, I think they might become something to write home about.

I agree that Hase / Volodin were the cream of the crop at this competition. I enjoy their skating and think they have something special - although their chemistry is still developing.

I also liked Miura / Kihara. They have two great programs this season. I think the SP, in particular, is successful. It seems like they're still getting comfortable with the FS, and I would say that even if there weren't as many errors as they had at this competition. I think the style is more of a stretch for them, but I'm hopeful they can do it.

I was sorry that Stellato-Dudek / Deschamps had to WD and look forward to seeing all three of these teams battle it out at Worlds.

I think Metelkina / Berulava and Conti / Macii both showed they're also contenders. Metelkina / Berulava's elements are just so well done. Their programs are kinda meh though - but I give them points for creativity. For Conti / Macii, I feel like their choreo seems a lot simpler when you compare it to the other teams.

Kam / O'Shea certainly have complex choreography - and just great packaging in general. Although not perfect, their nemesis the throw jumps were much better. They were actually not that far, points wise, from Conti / Maciii.

Germans were great. Silver and bronze could easily have been the other way around. Once the Georgians have had more time together and really up their components, they're going to be a huge podium threat. I love the new, darker/edgier approach the Japanese team are taking.
It looked like that was a personal victory for Ghilardhi and Ambrosini- they stepped up, despite their recent issues. Conti and Macii have real star quality, but looked a little off here.
If only Kam and O'Shea could skate cleaner... they have the qualities to win pretty much anything.

In terms of the 'Composition' component, you could argue that the other Italian team here are better.

I don't usually watch much pairs or ice dance, but decided to make an exception since the schedules kind of made it difficult to get away for sightseeing, walks or shopping in the nearby shopping centre.

Still don't think about starting to follow pairs, but I just gotta say Minerva Fabienne Hase rocks!

Miniki grows on me slowly. It's fun to look at them in K&C to spot Volodin drops the CHAD mode for a second. MInerva is a star
I loved Miura/Kihara. Period.
I see technical qualities in Georgians and that's it, I don't know if it's because I know how he treated his former partner or because of the ghastly FS (SP wasn't bad, but the most remarkable thing were pink legwarmers).
Conti/Macii have quality and true sportsmanship. He was off on ice and every single lift made me gasp in fear, she is such a brave woman, she must have felt how wobbly he was and she comforted him imediately after the music stopped.
Ellie and Danny are something, I sometimes wonder if they plan who will fall this time. Some of Ellie's saves should get positive GOE and some bonus to skating skills.
For Ghilardhi/Ambrosini I can't say much, they probably weren't in optimal shape as they were listed last minute and their music choices aren't my favourites.

What is CHAD mode, please? I'm dismal with acronyms, but can't tell whether this is one or not.

And I agree that Minerva is Such a Star! :love2: in every way: performance-wise, movement-wise, emotion-wise (she's lovable) and save-the-mistake wise.

Pretty solid performance by Hase and Volodin. Not very emotional or speedy, there were some messy nervous elements, but it was good enough to win this competition. She said she was very nervous and I anticipated that by putting them third in my predictions. I thought she would be tired. But they did very well in the short, maybe the incident in practice helped to shift the focus, and luckily the competition was messier in the free. Still work to do. Artistic/performance side needs further development. I think they excel when they skate clean; it just fits their style and image perfectly when everything is done smoothly and beautifully. If they don't skate clean, it really ruins the experience as you start to notice the lack of choreography, attack etc. Would also love for the reverse lasso lift that they do to get more speed, flow and ice coverage, the current state on it does not look very impressive compared to other lifts. Also to learn to control the nerves and put it to work. Like if they do well at Europeans, they could move to #1 ranking in the world standings and have to skate last in the short at Worlds.

Japanese short program is a perfect fit for them. Powerful and complex. Free is also good in terms of choreography, but I find the music somewhat monotonous, and by the end of the program it is getting annoying. They do have great attack to their skating, they are engaging.

Georgian team has got good throws and lifts. I can't say the same about their programs. The short program is a mess: the idea x music x costumes do not match. The free program looks weird, it's rather flat and empty, looked like element drilling. At no point I was interested in what was going on.

It's a shame Deanna and Max were not there. They really were missing.

Honorable mention is Ellie Kam who not only landed lutz throw, but also did 3s+2a+2a sequence. They might be a dark horse for the home worlds in March.

Camerawork was as french as ever.
