2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

I thought Canada has multiple pairs spots at each event? Why are they only sending one pair to each of the events allocated so far?

I am surprised that Grayson Long has been given a spot already. I thought he was disappointing at Next Gen - at least compared to what he is capable of - and he had underperformed at Nationals as well. It clearly hasn't been based on Next Gen, as Edward Vasii placed above him but does not have a spot. Perhaps they want Edward to prove that he has recovered from his injury before assigning him to any international events.
I would've given Edward the assignment over Grayson, but maybe it's better to not go straight down the rankings to assign skaters. I think he'll get an assignment, and I'm hoping he does well enough to merit a second assignment.

These are the ones that Skate Canada confirmed so far, but not the ones that will be on the ISU entries. I'm trying to convince myself that that's the plan and they'll be confirmed after more monitoring. I have no idea what's going on, hopefully they'll use more spots 😭

Yeah.. I hope the other junior pairs will just get added later... because this is not looking good so far.

I've gone through the current CTES minimums from the ISU website, here is the current status of minimums for the Seniors:

Alyssa ROBINSON / Jacob PORTZ91.52NoYes

Sara-Maude Dupuis can now be an alternate for Worlds 🎉 Katherine Medland Spence and Amy Shao Ning Yang no longer have the 4CC minimums under the new system.

Matthew Newnham didn't score well enough to keep the old Worlds minimums at Challenge Cup. Alec Guinzbourg no longer has the 4CC minimums under the new system.

Hensen/Lickers were not going to retain the Worlds RD minimums as they did not score well enough to keep the RD minimum. Robinson/Portz would have kept the minimums if they had stayed the same, so the change affects them.

Junior TES statistics haven't been updated for their CTES, so I won't do the standings for Juniors yet.

But Behnke/Sauve were removed from the TES statistics dated to June 18, which has been done with other teams/skaters that split/retired. I'm taking this as confirmation that they did split :(

I am super happy to see Martins/Kowalcyk, but where are Veillon/Brandys?
Probably going for a later JGP, which I think would be a good idea. They had a tempo violation in their RD, so that needs to be fixed before they compete internationally 😅

Veillon and Brandys are listed as Subs for Riga... which means we will see them later.

Pairs is still troubling me... Ava and Yoni as well as Marly are not listed as subs ... so far, only Desrochers Trasher are listed as entered with 3 sub teams that are much lower level.

I am confused about what's going on in pairs really.

Somebody mentioned that Marly were dealing with an injury and would be starting their season later.

Kemp/Elizarov did one of their programmes in one of the early summer comps. I wonder whether they perhaps burnt themselves out a bit last season and are doing a slower build this year. I would not be adverse to that if it helps them longer term.

Sounds good. Hope we'll hear about pairs soon.

Since SkatingScores updated to include CTES, I'll go through the Junior minimums for the start of the season. I'm sticking to those who competed at NextGen (mostly) and have scores from last season that are counted towards it:

Men

SkaterCTESJunior Worlds (80)
Anthony Paradis86.58Yes
David Bondar81.23Yes
Grayson Long79.03No
David Li89.09Yes
David Howes68.11No
David Shteyngart74.67No

Women

SkaterCTESJunior Worlds (72)
Hetty Shi83.97Yes
Lulu Lin96.99Yes
Kara Yun80.41Yes
Aleksa Volkova65.85No
Stavrina Aranitis47.56No
Kaiya Ruiter87.24Yes
Uliana Shiryaeva77.26Yes

I added Kaiya and Uliana in since they are eligible and have the minimums.

Pairs

TeamCTESJunior Worlds (63)
Ava Kemp/Yohnatan Elizarov85.77Yes
Martina Ariano Kent/Charly Laliberte Laurent83.89Yes
Jazmine Desrochers/Kieran Thrasher76.69Yes

I stuck with these three since they're the only Pairs who competed internationally last season that have not been confirmed to split. They could all go to Junior Worlds if they compete at Nationals.

Ice Dance

TeamCTESJunior Worlds (71)
Chloe Nguyen / Brendan Giang84.48Yes
Layla Veillon / Alexander Brandys81.80Yes
Auréa Cinçon-Debout / Earl Jesse Celestino65.12No
Victoria Carandiuc / Andrei Carandiuc60.15No
Sophia Gover / Billy Wilson French68.29No

Gover/Wilson French's CTES is for Lake Placid, so they are currently the only Junior team on NextGen who competed internationally this season.

Grayson Long, David Shteyngart and Cinçon-Debout/Celestino are the ones who who had the minimums and lost them with the move to CTES.

Off topic: As a former student of onomastics (names) a lifetime ago, I was surprised when I saw that David, which has been out of fashion since the 1980s, must have been revived as a fad baby name twenty years or so ago
