2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

Sidenote here- followed this thread for the season and I can just say that as a non-Canadian, I think you guys don't have to worry too much about the 2030 Olympics- unlike some other European federations. While the results haven't shown in, I'm expecting a few skaters and duos to be very competitive for World medals or even wins by like... 2029? The potential is there.

I agree. These olympics feel like the turning point. It's coming a bit too late to translate in a team medal this time but our skaters performed very well. They were underdogs and got marked a bit low in some cases but they won't be underdogs for much longer.
Worlds 2026 could be interesting in singles, hoping to gain spots.

I am not a fan of the Olympics - too much determined by who is willing to spend the money and it downplays the value of a world championship which IMO is less biased and less influenced by what country you skate for (note - I said less biased but not "not biased")

But I did enjoy watching the competition yesterday. My bar for enjoyment (rather than disappointment) was having our skaters perform to their ability. And they did that and more! Even after Maddie's fall on the lutz, she dug in and skated a great programme. Lea and Trennt were amazing. LaLa were out of this world. And Stephen is really starting to feel the music with his skating.

I knew that Italy would take the bronze - it has been their country's focus to do so for at least 8 years. Not sure what Canada's focus was. I think SC may have been deflated after being denied the bronze at Beijing (another weird manipulation of the results).

Should Maddie have finished behind Lara, should Stephen have finished behind Matteo, should Lea and Trennt have finished behind the US team? In all cases, my (partisan) opinion is no way, but I wasn't surprised. The scores were very very close and came down to PCS and not TES - where judges might have flipped the result if it wasn't the Olympics.

So - very proud of our team over the last 3 days. I hope they can carry that momentum through to worlds with some good skates in the individual events.

Poor LaLa, they are being dropped even more. All to set up so the right teams will be in contention for world medals once the top 4 or 5 teams retire. Not surprised that the 2nd USA team is being bumped up to make sure the USA gets a medal at worlds either this year if we see retirements, or if not next year. Worse part is the 3rd USA team is closer to them then they are to the 2nd USA tea,. So I can see the 3rd team even moving ahead of LaLa in the free.

Lala had an unusual mistake on twizzles which didn't help their score... But yeah... They are dropped for now. They will rise back when all the older teams retire. What is certain though is that the USA did a good job propping up their second best team... Even if that meant sacrificing CPom

I think the placements were correct. Lia and Trennt were really unfortunate that Kam and O'Shea also had the skate of their lives.

I would love Deanna and Max to compete, but only if she really is fit to do so. We don't want her ending up doing the same sort of thing as Lindsay Vonn has...
Doctors will decide for them. Lindsay was apparently cleared...

I could understand saying that LaLa were dropped last year, where they had solid programs and didn't place as well as we thought. But I don't think they are being dropped this year - I think that they came up with a very poor Rhythm dance and unfortunately for them, it just didn't stand up I very much agreed with the scores and would have had the second American team ahead of them. There costuming was terrible in that it makes Zach look like he's skating in a potato sack and detracts from his line and posture, which is usually very strong. As well, the fact that their music is typically used as background music to pump up crowds, in my mind does not help, because it's harder to take it seriously and automatically makes it seem like a show program. As well, I think it was just too much of the same thing for one program. So, yes they have placed lower, but I think it is at least partially due to the fact that their Rhythm dance was so weak.

I love the second American team, far more than the Third who I have always thought were vastly overrated and I could never believe they were so close to Zack and Marjorie, including beating them at times. I just love how crisp and fast and expressive America team number two is - love them the first time I saw them last year. To me, they have the potential to easily be World beaters - it reminds me of Tessa and scott, who were so clearly on the rise when they were young.

@discodisco LaLa is my favourite team. But, I agree with their placement in regards to the second last flight of skaters.

To me, the standouts were the 2nd American team. I would have placed them in first overall. This is the abandonment I like to see in ice skating.

My favourite group was actually the second last flight of skaters. When I watched the last group of skaters, I felt like I was watching mid to above average level of dancing. The Italians should be 11-15 and C&B, the Brits in the 6-10 range. But, I don’t know anything about dancing.

Well, we have a chance for a bronze medal with P&P now. I think they should seal it now as their free skate program is stronger than Brits. We will see.

I finally was able to watch all of the RD. Yes, Zingas Kolesnik are better than CPom. I agree with that. There is just something missing for me that I cannot point out. Just like there is something I love from Lopareva Brissaud (other than Geoffrey's face ) that I cannot point out.

It appears there will be an update on Deanna's status "soon" per the CBC. No further information than that, though. 😬 (I've been looking all morning for a Deanna update...)

My point was that it was very close and not embarrassing. TES was very good. Components can be improved with improved reputations (as well as skating etc).

Carol Lane yesterday did make a strong point about getting our skaters out to more international competitions - referencing Zingas/Kolesnik's rise and number of competitions they have done this year. Her point - judges then known them and start to believe in them - and actually reward properly what they are putting out. Kurt said that is expensive and she replied (paraphrasing what she said) that the expense paid back in better results so good value. But she sounded angry and so this (I believe) is a bone of contention between SC and coaches/athletes. See what happens after the Olympics (or Worlds). SC needs to change its strategy if they really want to develop skaters who can reach the top internationally.

Also needs to be some solid effective lobbying to get more ISU competitions outside of Europe - where skaters don't need to cross 6 time zones to compete. East Asia - same issue. Not just the cost of competing but the toll on the athletes (I speak as somebody who often has to travel internationally for work - it takes a day per time zone to recover full capacity to work and I am not an athlete!)
