Okay, the qualifying event is over. I can now properly address the … stuff… I’ve been reading in here about Gumennik.

I think he showed, at the very least, that he can fall inside the top ten at the Olympics. 260 with technical calls is nothing to sneer at and is comparable to what the top European men (i.e, Siao Him Fa nowadays, Britschgi, the Italian men) generally score. I think he did himself proud.

Now is he a podium threat? Well, he’s not competing with Ilia, but neither is anyone else. The Japanese men? Kagiyama, no, but he can probably hang with Sato and Miura. I think (and hope) he’ll do very well at the Olympics.

The only thing I’m worried about is the impression he made. Gumennik is a PCS skater dammit, but you wouldn’t know that if you saw him for the first time in China!

To be completely honest here, I wouldn't say that Petr is really a PCS skater. He has nice posture and good skating skills, so he is "ok in PCS" lets say, but the key factor here is that there is very little to no personal engagement, no emotional commitment in his skating. He skates in a very rational, automate way. I say this though I like him well enough, but, as cliché as it may sound, he skates with his head and not with his heart. This may have its benefits, as it can be easier to be more stable, but it means that for me, he is not really an artistic skater. I would rather say he is a tech skater with very good skating skills / posture. And I understood as well that this is why he was selected among all the available options : not the best technician, not the best artist, but the best compromise between both.

That said, he has of course some better skates than others from a PCS point of view and I agree that the ones in the qualifier were particularly unfortunate :frown: You could clearly see his emotional disconnection to the skating, how he was just going through the motions that he had practiced a hundred times (and I'm sorry to say, Petr is a good skater but he is no actor, and so all the pantomime parts looked particularly fake). And more to the bottom line, he is not helped at all by the programs. The SP is non existant, just terrible, and the Onegin program, that was not that bad last season, got reduced to the point where only arm movement and pantomime remained. Not helpful at all.

Gosh, I didn't really mean for this to sound so critical of Petr really. But I do admit I was expecting so much more for him that it was quite a disappointment. To be fully honest, it somehow felt more like a defeat disguised as a victory (contrary to Adelia for exemple). Anyway, nothing to be done now, he really needs to regroup and do better in Milan. And for that, his best bet is actually to improve and secure his tech. If tech fails him again like today, there won't be much hope for anything. He does need to skate clean, that's the priority, in both skates of course but perhaps even more in the SP, because that will define his starting position for the FS and besides I'm not 100% sure he has the fighting fire needed to come back from a hole, so better not to test it. Good luck to him, I do really want him to skate well in Milan and bring some sparkles to the event!

I would also chalk it up to nerves, he has skated much better before. He will likely improve throughout the season. Speaking of Kolyada, I watched some of his programs again. I knew that he was very balletic and versatile, but I had forgotten what a good spinner he was!
 
Gumennik was always about the drama in presentation rather than classic glide, heh. Despite it being an Olympic qualifier, this is an early season performance. He will compete again, and the programs are likely to develop more. Just watch RPG/Nats for more of an idea on how he might look in Milan. But I doubt he will be an 'only jumped 5 quads' like Malinin.
 
I did not expect to love Gumennik's SP as much as i did. The first time I saw it, i thought it was boring along with his new FP.

I know that they went back to his old Free program based on comments but now I'm also curious on how his new FP actually looks like in real competition. I thought his old FP in Beijing was just alright, actually pretty boring. Hopefully he'll show the new program in one of the Russian GP stages so we can compare.

I think they can also improve the placement of his jumps especially the combos to max his scores and probably of hitting percentage.

Currently he has 4F,, 4Lz, 4Lo, 4S+3t/ 4S+2A, 3A, 3Lz+3lo+2Lo.

Doesn't make sense to do 4S+3T so late in the first half and he is not getting bonus anyway. Also doing the 3 combos as last jump pass is a head scratcher. There is really no room to improvise if he messes up in any of his combos.

My suggestion is

4F+3T (he does this combo in the short consistently so why not do it in the free)
4Lz
4Lo
4S (can add the 3T here if he messes up the 4F+3T)
/ 4S+2A+2A
3A
3Lz+3Lo (removing the 2Lo here but added a second 2A in the other combo)

Oh Dima :cry: These are very sad news, I was looking forward to seeing him at test skates

Hope for a fully recovery for him and that he can come back soon and skate during the season :pray: Much strength and good health to Dima!! 💪:ghug:
 
Then, in the free, Mozalev was back to the baseline. But at least he had solid programs. Hope he didn't have that Euro flashback.
 
On a completely unrelated note, does anyone know what happened to Fedor Zonov, if he still competes or left competitive skating?
