2025 Cup of China Pairs Short Program

That was a great event. Pairs has had a few difficult years of rebuilding but there has been a lot of improvement from teams and new teams formed. It might be becoming my favorite discipline at the moment. (also the scoring in pairs is generally a lot more fair and balanced). Love the Italians, appreciate the Georgians, was thrilled to see Sui/Han back, and Katie Mcbeath and partner are quickly becoming my faves!

The Italians absolutely deserved the award for Best Short Program Choreography of the Year. She nailed that program — every musical highlight was used perfectly, the transitions were seamless, and the little step sequence into the lift, plus the small flourishes after each element, really added a dance-like feel. They looked relaxed, confident, and completely in character throughout. I thought they should have been closer to the Georgians and clearly ahead of the Chinese. Some elements weren’t top quality — they usually get a level 4 on the twist, but this time it was a level 3 since she missed the split — still, this is the first time the Italians have really really impressed me. I haven’t seen a better pairs short program this season.

The top teams were great even with a mistake by the Chinese. Georgia is oing to keep getting higher scores if they skate ike this. They are getting consistent (take note Deanna and Max). I don't feel they have the connection but they are getting better. The fact the Chinese in their first competition and with a huge mistake still scored well says a lot. I like the Italians program - well thought out for sure. and an American team is on the cusp of the podium again. US Nationals is going to be great. Granted may no super established leader but lots of potential and I do think they have moved ahead of Canada with their pairs program. Looking forward to the fs.

another fun fact: Robert Kunkel almost sliced off his finger over the summer, he got cut really bad on a skating blade and had to have surgery but he healed a lot faster than expected which is why he's here now
yikes - that's the second finger-slicing horror story I've read about today - [the other being Harry Mattick (who's about to return to competition, I think, with one of Zoe Jones's daughters)]

I would ask you to remind me to add "Did Not Miss a Beat" to the potential commentator bingo card, but I feel for Chris having to commentate this marathon of SP's on his own. ;).
And all over again tomorrow, but MOAR, for the free.

So happy Sui/Han are back. Aside from the fall, that program and program from the Georgians is the best pairs skating we've had this quad.

Quite weak show except Georgia pair and was nice to see Olympic champions back, but overall nothing excited happen

The Georgian team was clearly the best.
Amazing elements 👏

I think it will be a battle for silver between the Italians and Sui/Han. Sui/Han to me were good. If she nails the jumps, watch out!!!

They couldnt find anyone willing to sit with him and not slap him silly....

The scoring for Sui/ Han was very questionable. Her 3T was underrotated and the lift was a press lift and should not have counted as a Lasso. Things like that don't do this sport any good.
Thank you. And I really like them! PaulE and I have followed them since they were kids....But that was not a 72 level skate. We were at SA Portland OR 2010 in the front row watching them practice. Sui fell hard on a throw and crashed into the boards right in front of us. Badly shaken...Han came over and picked her up and held her and whispered comfort and encouragement into her ear...though it was 15 years ago, I can see it like it was yesterday.

BTW, Our Bud David Carmichael took this pic. One of the nicest guys I have met in skating. He would come over and tell us the big name ice dancers were practicing somewhere else so we didnt wait to see them at events. Or give us starting order sheets.

He was fully retired and not skating anymore last year and got dragged back into competition, I'm pretty sure 80 years from now he could be dead and gone and the Chinese Federation would dig up his skeleton, put it out on skates, and have it lift Wenjing (she's immortal, obviously)

Like it could literally happen, I wish I was kidding but there's a shocking practice in some regions of China of marrying the dead people. Literally The Corpse Bride scenario.
😬

I lightly study the interesting 56 recognized minorities of China and many have interesting customs...as well as clothing....

Exactly, and it’s demoralizing to the other teams competing that these errors are being ignored and this team is being pushed because of their reputation. The lift as performed is a group 4 lift, not group 5, and thus should count as an invalid element in the SP. They suffered no loss of points for this erroneous element. Shame on you, ISU!

And so what? Biased judging is even more evident in Ice dance
