I thought it was strange on the NBC Olympic tv listing website that it stated that Ilia Malilnin and Amber Glenn are scheduled to perform at the exhibition when the competition hasn't finished yet. I could understand having Ilia scheduled to perform, since he's pretty much a shoo-in for a medal. But, there is no guarantee that Amber will perform well, unless the placements don't matter to determine if a skater is to perform at the gala.

It's the usual NBC "Go USA" market your recent American National champs hype.

They may be planning to have all the winners of the team gold medal at the exhibition. Otherwise, it's just marketing, as noted above. I have seen marketing pictures for Skate Canada International that show skaters that won't even be there!

Hmm... unless they put ice in the closing ceremony, might this mean an appearance by Carolina in the gala?

How many years now have I been saying that Carolina would have her big goodbye at the 2026 Olympics Gala? 🤔 :p

There again, I had been saying for years that she would be lighting the flame, and it didn't happen.

No harm to the people involved, but I still think it was very unfair to have all three of the people lighting the flames coming from Alpine Skiing.

And just as I type that, Carolina gets interviewed by Tiffany Zahorski!

That was a lovely interview. Especially the bit where the two of them were reminiscing about when they competed at 2018 Senior Worlds in this very arena.

Wait. They've invited Ilia to skate at the gala? I'm not sure how I feel about that.

He certainly doesn't merit it in terms of this competition. But I suspect that if the goal is to have eyeballs on screens, it's a smart move on the part of the gala people... whoever they are... I don't even know who decides these things.

Even if he doesn't merit it, I hope he skates well and ends his Olympics on a better note. I admit I'll make an effort to watch just to see how this saga ends, and I almost never watch a gala.

Ilia has a gold in the Team event, so why not? And that gold was due to his skating in the FS. Others contributed of course but he was second (SP) and First (FS). And there was only a point difference in the end. His skate made that happen.

Generally his Gala programmes are fun though. That's what Galas are for!

Well, we all know what happened to Ilia.

I agree that it's odd for NBC to be talking about the exhibition lineup before the end of the competition. Even as an American, I get very impatient with some of their USA hype. NBC and Peacock still have Ilia splashed all over their sites, too. It seems a bit sad and rather pathetic after Friday's debacle.

It also sort of bothers me that they're making a huge deal out of Amber and Alyssa while almost completely ignoring Isabeau. Maybe that's a good thing, though -- with less media attention, she can stay focused on what she needs to do for her events.

And I'm nervous for Ilia but glad he's going to Worlds. IMO it's good that he's getting right back on the horse, as it were.

That is why a sneaky part of me is hoping that if one of the American women take it, it is her. (Please note, I am not heavily favoring anyone, the top rank will all be good for OGM in my eyes.)

As an American, I'll be delighted to see any of the US women on the podium. Isabeau is my favorite but they each have their own unique style and strengths. I'm proud of all of them. :jump3:

That said, Kaori skated like a goddess in the team event. If she can replicate that in the women's free, I'd say the OGM is hers -- and rightly so!

Maybe they want Isabeau to be on the podium. If I had to choose one of the 3 Americans to be on the podium, I would pick Isabeau. That way she gets a medal too, since Amber and Alyssa already have a medal from the team event.
Crossing my fingers that Kaori gets the gold.

Actually, it was the pair team who won the Team Gold for USA. Ilia was clearly supposed to won both his events and in the end, he underperformed, losing one point in the SP. The pair team overperformed in their FS and won one more point than expected. Without this extra point, even with Illia winning the FS, USA and Japan would have had the same number of points, and Japan would have won the Gold medal based on the tie-break rules.

Not to mention that his win in the Team Free Skate came as a surprise to many commentators, at least in Europe, and did not feel that obvious and justified at all. Many felt he was also held up by the judges even in the Short when he should have come rather 3rd that 2nd, behind not only Yuma but also Gogolev.
While complaining about reputation judging has suddenly become very legitimate in this event, I think mentioning these voices is just as legitimate as some other complaints
