I am so sad that the medal platform damaged Guignard & Fabbri's and Chock & Bates' blades so that they had to be resharpened. I hope both teams will be able to adjust and their performance will not be affected.

I'm always surprised at the new things I learn, even after following the sport for decades.

I wouldn't have guessed sharpening the blades would be that big of a deal, but I'm learning that even tiny adjustments during a competition are very important. If I think about it, I suppose it makes sense - it's just that I've never thought about it. Wouldn't the ISU be expected to coordinate with the organizing committee to avoid something like this with the medal stand?

Edit: I hesitate to possibly spread fake news, but this X user claims that JSF has filed a complaint. To whom, and to what end, I do not know.

Actually the skaters had chips and nicks removed from the blades. They could not be sharpened without damaging them further from what I read. You risk changing the rocker of the blades if you sharpen them. I’m sure this can not have helped them in the pattern step but what can you do on such short notice after skating both parts of teams. I feel sorry for all the teams. Chock & Bates also had the board signage come off the boards while they were practicing early in the week - they managed to avoid them but still scary. Enough stupid stuff has happened to them already.

Perhaps one of our GS members like @Ic3Rabbit or others who do skate sharpening can comment further on this kind of damage. I feel badly for all three teams who worked their lives for this event and have to deal with these unfortunate circumstances.

I'm way too nervous to comment during the competition, so I came here to say how heartbroken I am for Hannah and Ye for not qualifying for FD! Their RD (& FD) is one of my favourite this year, but those twizzles were the end of them ( some other teams were also having problems with them, Olympic pressure, I guess!). Not so much pressure for Emilea and Vadym, they were on fire!
I'm also happy that Milla and Nikolaj qualified for the FD on their first Olympics together, but what a bitter-sweet moment for them, at the expense of their training mates Jennifer and Benjamin!
I was pleasantly surprised at how well Julia and Matthias (another favourites of mine) performed after all those injuries! Kudos to them!
And of course, Piper and Paul in 3rd after the RD was at least what I was hoping for!
In my (unprofessional) opinion, the standings are surprisingly correct enough, could have been worse, right?

Now, all I want is for skaters to do their absolute best in FD and the judges to do THEIR ABSOLUTE best to be fair and impartial!

I just watched both programs for the French in the American teams. And I still, can't for the life of me, figure out why Chock and Bates came in second.

Except to say I'd like them to use fewer words, I'm not going to criticize Johnny and Tara as commentators again.

They always find positive things to say about every skater and every team. Most importantly, they don't negatively single out the high scoring competitors against "their own" countrymen and women. They're fair and complimentary to all.

That's in contrast to what some Canadian commentators (Carol Lane especially) have been doing all this week. Sorry, but not sorry. I can't let that behavior ride without saying something.

I will also add that I love Canadian Tracy Wilson's commentary for ID, and I always have ever since I heard her commentary for the first time. I'll also add that I like Meagan Duhamel's commentary. I wish someone would use her again.

The "talking too much" comes from trying to explain elementary things to a broad audience including new fans and, in the case of the Olympics, once-every-four-year fans. Might be a little boring to us (would-be) experts , but oh well -- talking is what NVC pays them for, after all.

They are not cruel or snarky toward any skater.

Not trying to sway anybody, but the reason Chock and Bates came in second was that, on review, one of their elements was reduced from a level 4 to a level 3. The commentators that I was listening to never really explained why, except to say that in ice dance the least little shallow edge can knock you down a level.

As I understand it the cognoscenti say that this puts C&B behind the 8 ball, because the free dance is the stronger of the French team's two programs. Have to wait and see.

on these threads, I have read quite a few instances where they were snarky and completely incompetent when it comes to ice dance.

Carol Lane is competent. She does raise issues. She does have her biases, but she is very good. Not everyone may appreciate her and that's fine.

I have mentioned it before, if you don't like Carol, then why are you watching on the CBC feed which is geoblocked outside Canada ? Carol is hired by the CBC and her commentary is catered to the Canadian audiences. So of course, she will say things about Chock and Bates that are fair and not all praise. She did mention very nice things about them in both programs. She praised their qualities and yet, she did mention some areas where she is not convinced. She wasn't snarky or anything. She also raised a very interesting issue about the rise of Zingas Kolesnik. She did mention how fabulous they are but also how clever the US Fed was sending them to so many competitions, especially in Europe. They are getting the exposure needed to grow in the sport. Judges know them. Judges give them feedback. They get higher and higher notes. She praised that strategy and wished for Skate Canada to use it. There are tons of examples like this. So I find it
1) misleading to accuse her of whatever she is accused and 2) ungrateful to watch on CBC outside of Canada, because it's a nice reliable and free feed if you know your way around VPNs. It's actually not free for Canadians because our high income taxes fund the CBC. So beggars cannot be choosers... . enjoy the images... you (not you specifically) don't like Carol ? fair... find another feed.

I have never heard Carol Lane comment on TV, and, frankly,I am not 100% sure that I know who she is. I have no doubt that she is, as you report, a fine commentator, ibnsightful, fair, perceptive, knowledgable -- it's just that I cannot attest to this one way or another from my own experience.

Ok, I have notheing more to say on that subject.

Tara and Johnny? They're OK. They are not experts on ice dance, but neither am I, so I still learn some things from them. I do wish that people would lighten up a little and would get off their cases, but I guess that's the life of anyone who is somewhat in the public eye. I don't like it, but oh well.

it wasn't addressed to you specifically like mentioned in my post. I quoted you because you said that Tara and Johnny are not snarky... well I beg to differ.

The rest about Carol Lane is not directed at you but at the person a few posts before . There have been a few people complaining about Carol Lane and my gut feeling is that it's because she is the coach of Piper and Paul and well, some people assumed that all she would do is diss other teams, which she isn't doing.

I am watching the men now and she has a lot of praise for so many people.

It's hilarious to me to find the term LALA in that article because I believe I was the first or one of the first ones to call them like this on this forum when they were young juniors. And now, that term has made the French CBC news
