Are we watching the same Johnny and Tara? I’m pretty sure I haven’t watched them in at least 10 years. Maybe they have improved.
They have. They're both trying. Like most of us with a lifelong bad habit (Johnny's is snarking, Tara's, oh who knows?), they will occasionally slip up. I'm thinking of Johnny now, and I was mad at him for years for how he bad-mouthed Evan Lysacek. But he really does have interesting remarks and they're positive almost all the time.

It's slightly off-topic, but it makes sense to me: I'm reading Claire Tomalin's biography of Jane Austen, and she pointed out that Jane's banishment/abandonment away from her family at age 4 months and again at age 7 years were traumatic and contributed or caused her to have defenses; hence her caustic remarks. Hers are funny; but I might not think so if I were the target.

So Chock says that they skated the best they ever had, worked hard, and didn't make any mistakes ("skated flawlessly"), implying that therefore they should have won.
I don't think Madison Chock's statement was implying that they should have won.

I think she was saying exactly what they want to take away from this event. She and Evan are proud of their skate. Their skating was what they could control. They could not control what the judges did.

Hoenstly I would have given Gogo a bit higher score in the FS but that would have also, gulp, put him on the actual podiu mahead of sato. Can you imagine the uproar???
I guess I really don't get this one. Is there some kind of a fan war going on between Gogoliev fans and Sato fans that it would cause an "uproar" if one of them placed higher than the other?

People who are upset about these remarks are clearly just looking for a way to defend their dislike of Maddie/ Evan. Honestly, based on their public comments Maddie/Evan might be the least dramatic, least " interesting" people of all time. They are seemingly extremely kind and always measured in what they say. Maddie didn't say they should have won or even that the results were wrong. She said they skated their best and that judging should be fair. How could anyone object to that statement? People have a strange habit of thinking that just because they don't like the way a person or team skates or the way they are scored that makes that skater or team "evil." It's a pretty juvenile take.

If the judge was removed only for his own student, that wouldn't prevent him from giving low marks to his students' main rival.
Yes. That's a given. It seems like the musical world is less crooked than figure skating. Who would have thought ?

I think the issue is when a judge favours their own skaters and then lowballs the main contenders. Then, there are two (or more) manipulations of the scoring which shifts the average scores completely. One manipulation would be considered as taken care of by the removal of the outlier .
It's not perfect but it's already better than what we have now :)

I really hate that this evolved into an "Anybody but Chock and Bates" season and event.

You know, if things in this event had played out EXACTLY the same way, with the only exception being that Chock and Bates were Canadian, the roof would have been torn off this place.

And I'd believe EXACTLY the same thing. They were robbed. But I can guarantee you some people wouldn't have the same feelings about it as they do now.

The hilarious part of this is the attempt to make Madison Chock less likeable.

As I said on the main thread, if we want to make this a contest of likeability, I'm ready to bring some heat.

Madison Chock’s mom weighs in.

These Newsweek writers ought to be ashamed of themselves. What Madison's mother said was that, "whatever the score, our children are "golden" to us."

What did we expect her to say? "Our daughter sucks at ice skating and I never did like that Evan guy she hooked up with!"

Newsweek used to be a respected periodical. Now it’s just clickbait

Well, knowing modern media they were probably hoping for just that.

I think all the top 4 teams with one noticeable exception are quite likeable. But, all those teams with the exception of Maddie/Evan have actually pointedly clearly criticized the judging this year ( Which is fine imho). In fact G/F both said they thought C/B should have won this event which is more than C/B have said. It takes a lot of "imagination" to make C/Bs the villains of the tale.

Sorry you feel this way. I doubt that's true though.
Nobody really cares about Canadian athletes. Some people think Piper and Paul should be higher on the podium, yet most of the talks you see mention being so happy they finally got their medal... who cares about the colour... :)

This forum is American. I follow figure skating from the other side of the border too. After the initial uneasiness, it died down quickly. The media didn't bite. Nobody is talking about ice dance anymore. It is really too bad for the American fans and media that Ilia Malinin didn't win gold. It would have diverted the banter.

I suggest you follow speed skating. Jordan Stolz is a one in a generation talent and it's too bad he is not getting more attention.
