it would because then Piper and Paul would have placed ahead of Italians (probably) and then both teams would be tied entering the last 3 events. So if singles did better for Canada which is possible, it may have been enough to overcome a deficit in pairs.

Yes. They are the strongest foundational skaters and this FD is amazing but the judges just pretend not to notice.
