Chelsea Verhaegh and Sherim van Geffen are a Dutch Ice Dance pair. They teamed up early 2019, and have competed at the WC 2021 in Stockholm.

Chelsea was born on the 11th of June in 2000, Sherim on the 16th of July 1993. Both were born in The Netherlands and started as single's skaters. Verhaegh started skating when she was 6 but Van Geffen didn't start until he was 14. Verhaegh had always been intrigued by Ice Dancing even during the time she was still doing single's. They started training together in 2018 and officially joined forces in 2019.

In 2020 at the Challenge Cup they became National Champions for the first time (at the 2021 Challenge cup there was no National Championship) but, it has to be admitted, they were the only participants. However, midway 2020 they were confronted with a rival pair, Hanna Jakucs and Alessio Galli, originally from Italy/Hungary who had come to an agreement with the Dutch Skating Federation to represent The Netherlands.

Chelsea and Sherim continued with their own plans, in the sense that they wanted to represent The Netherlands at major competitions and were continuing to improve. They managed to attain the minimum TES for the SP at the WC at the Ice Star competition in Minsk (Belarus) and the minimum TES for the FS at the LuMi Dance Trophy in Odessa (Ukraine). At the WC they were 29th, and weren't able to do their FD. However, they hadn't expected to. They were proud to be able to represent their country at a WC. The first time for an ID couple in 24 years.

In the season 2021-2022 they were less lucky. Attaining the OG was a long shot but they tried to get there with the Nebelhorn procedure. However, their final placement there was 19th, not nearly enough to get there. They could not compete at Euros as their rivals had done better the first part of the season. They also missed the WC in Montpellier, again because their rivals had done better, but who weren't their either due to not having enough points for the minimum TES required.

They made a fresh start in 2022-2023 where they were 7th at Mezzaluna Cup, 10th at the IceChallenge in Graz and 9th at the Santa Claus Cup. Whenever they met their rivals there emerged a battle royal as the points they received were pretty close in the RD. However Hanna and Alessio managed to come out on top to be the ID team going to the EC, but Chelsea and Sherim managed to get to the WC (getting the Tech minimums at Challenge Cup in Tilburg). Funnily their rivals are coached by Maurizio's former ID partner Barbara Fusarpoli.

They are coached by Maurizio Margaglio. the choreographer is Neil Brown.

Chelsea and Sherim are going to Nebelhorn! Best wishes and all the luck in the World!

Sadly, although their Olympic ambitions were a long shot and not expected, they felt they were somewhat underscored in the RD which made it more difficult to skate well in the FD (and they made some mistakes there). Let's hope everything improves next time.

Chelsea and Sherim will be competing at Ice Challenge in Graz this weekend. There are 11 teams and their rivalry with Hanna and Alessio continues, as they will be there as well. Good luck Chelsea and Sherim!

There was an interesting but rather sad update on Chelsea and Sherim on the Dutch Skating website:

In summary
They had a great season, so happy to be able to go to Japan.
Their funding is not so good.
Sherim coaches on the side and Chelsea is looking for a job to pay the bills.
The federation does support them (they could go on trainingscamp in Canada) but ID is not really popular in The Netherlands.

(remark: if you're a succesful speed skater you can actually live on it. Due to lots of sponsor money for the speed skaters but there is hardly any sponsor money for figure skaters let alone Ice Dancers)
