A fair way to pick GPF finalists?

and no need to preach about Patrick's level… my comment was simply to show that nothing is ever certain… in this thread… i find that people are often proposing things as if it would benefit their protégés… well… didn't this weekend's events show us all that we don't know what will happen tomorrow? anything can happen…

Nam is improving, but he is still nowhere near Patrick's level. His technical don't earn the GOE that Patrick can - and rightfully so. His jumps don't have the power or flow that Patrick's do, his spins aren't as good, and his step sequence isn't at Patrick's level. And then there are PCS. Nam usually scores in the 7s, while Patrik scores in the 9s. Even with a poor skate, he's in the mid 8s.

And Elladj can be hit and miss. The chances that both beat Patrick are slim to none. And even if that were to happen, then they would send whoever was the National champion, and send the other two to 4CC to duke it out. They have actually done that before - on more than one occasion IIRC.

OK Canadians, It's question time again. Are there any Canadian Fans who wish Patrick had stayed retired? I'm sensing some tension and it reminds me of what Jeremy Abbott dealt with when he decided to skate after 2014. I guess because I love Patrick so much and I'm from the US, I thought that ALL of Canada would be in love with Patrick.

I'm not Canadian, but I will chime in.

I'm glad Patrick is back. While I have been critical of some of his performances in the past... and I acknowledge I've sometimes been one of those shouting "inflation"... the men's event has suffered with his absence.

Now, if only D/W and V/M will return... nearly two years after their retirements, I think they would dominate the dance event again and one of them would almost certainly win a second OGM.

I can't speak for all Canadians, but I'm really glad he's back.

I suspect most are, because he's a contender for the Worlds podium. It's not at all like Jeremy, who would do well at Nationals, get on the world team, and then underperform once there. Patrick plus Nam actually have a good sot of regaining three spots for Canada. Without Patrick, that would be doubtful

Not Canadian here either, but I think the key difference between Patrick and Jeremy is that 1.) Patrick is younger (24, vs. 29 for Jeremy) and 2.) Patrick is still at the top of his game. Just look at his FS from Skate Canada. I think many people feel that Jeremy peaked a while ago.

All that said, if Jeremy returned after his one-year hiatus, there would be plenty of folks who would welcome his return as well.

Chan should have placed lower in TEB SP but of course his over generous PCS came to save the day again. I'm pulling for Brown to bump the perenially overscored Chanadian in the GPF.

No, I think Amelie Lacoste did, actually. I think that was the year that Lacoste won Nationals, but the Canadian ladies were down to one spot. The reason they had the skate off was because Cynthia had a stronger track record and I think it had been the first time Amelie beat her. Cynthia retired after that

Josee was such a delight to watch when she was on, but she was rather inconsistent. She was also at least 25 when she retired. IIRC, she had sort of retired for a year, and then came back, then lost to Robinson, and that was it.

NHK is going to be so interesting! Just as interesting as TEB. You have Yuzuru, Boyang, Maxim, Jason, Takahito and Konstantin who really could finish in any order (Yuzuru would have to do a lot to not win, but hey....the SP at Skate Canada did happen).

But yes, Jason holds the key to Patrick's fate (EDITED: assuming that The SP proposal goes through), just as Jeremy held Jason's fate at last year's NHK Trophy. It would be something if Jason ended up overachieving and getting that last spot, something Jeremy couldn't help him do last year.

Speaking of the SP's....if you only counted the SP's toward GPF finals, you'd have some interesting numbers.

The real travesty in PCSs was Kovtun getting higher PCSs than Uno. (And to a lesser extent Ten over Uno.)
