I know this is that time of year when talks of retirement start hitting the Twitter sphere. It is still a little early but I have not heard any talk of Adam retiring. I don't think he should, I think he has had a very positive season and I think he has some new found confidence in himself and he has proven that he is capable of doing 2 strong programs back to back while skating strong and clean.
My hope is that he puts a quad in his SP, even a quad sal. For his LP, I would love to see his quad lz, a triple axel/triple loop and maybe even a quad sal. I say that because I think he is fully capable of it. He is the fittest he as ever been is strong and powerful. Why retire?
Next season will be a different ballgame than this season, with Jason and Joshua back from their injuries, but I think Adam is up for the challenge. He trains hard, remember when he had so much trouble with his 3 axel? Now look how solid it is.
I think Raphael has been wonderful, he seems to be the one coach that has really clicked for Adam. I also think being roommates and training buddies with Ashley helps as well. I think they feed off each other.
Of course if he does decide to retire, I think he will get involved in choreography, which I think he would do very well, he has expressed that he enjoys it a lot.
So, if he continues on next season what does he need to have an even better season? What should he add to stand on the worlds podium?
Should he retire? ( remember, Jeremy Abbott was older than Adam and won nationals)

Thoughts?

I think we will see him next year. He is clearly in good form and riding high and confident.

He could choose to do as others have done, and retire while on top; but to me that would be at least one season too early. I am sure people were predicting that he would get buried by Joshua and Jason and Nathan this year too, and no-one could have foreseen that none of those three would be on the Worlds team. It will be a harder task for him when Joshua and Jason are back, but he managed to stand on that National podium against Joshua, Jason and Max, so I don't see why their return should automatically mean he's off the podium.

I doubt, however, that he will ever rotate the quad Lutz. I'll enjoy being proved wrong if I am, but he has not made any noticeable progress on it in the last three seasons except to get generous < calls instead of << and stand up on it sometimes.

I was very impressed by his performance at Worlds and actually think he should have been 2nd in the LP and 4th overall. Interestingly, he had transitions leading into his Quad Lutz in the LP for the first time ever, so I think we will be seeing it in the SP next season. If he can consistently land it cleanly even with a < call, that will help him out.

However, a consistent 4Lutz< in both programs still won't be enough to hit the world podium these days. Maaaybe if he can start getting it around enough to not get underrotation calls and skates two perfect programs it would be enough (already a huge ask), but he's most likely going to need a second quad in the LP if he wants to be a serious contender.

I think he will stay in until at least 2018 whether or not he should- he's going to want to try for the Oly team. I agree there's no need for him to retire now if he's still enjoying skating, especially as his results seem on an upward trend, but I do wish he'd give up the quad lutz. I'm sorry, but as others have said he's never ever ever going to rotate it, and I do think he's been working on it for long enough that we can believe that with very high confidence.

TSL just posted an interview with Adam from yesterday's Figure Skating in Harlem event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sLWWigajcE

He mentions that he already has ideas about programs for next season, he just needs to schedule some time with his choreographers. He later mentions that he won't be doing as much choreography for other skaters because he wants to focus on his own skating the next couple of seasons, so it definitely sounds like he's planning to stick around through the next Olympics.

I hope, Ashley's example is going to inspire him. He is a high quality skater. But the question is if he can jump quads. The only time ever he managed to stay on his feet after his UR 4Lz was Boston. If he keeps both underrotating and falling, well, getting into Top-10 is the best he can aim at. The big question if he is going to be motivated to just get into Top-10. If he can master 4Lz (which is quite hard as it is the most difficult jump with no one but Bojang doing it) he may shoot for podiums, although Top-5 is more realistic. If he somehow adds a stable 4S, well, then he will be a force to reckon with. But how realistic is that? If there is a chance I would love him to stay - outside quads he is a very good skater - with quads he will become one of the great.

Oh I'm sure he'll stay in for a shot at Pyeongchang. It's two years away and he has just a good a chance to make the team. Kind of like Kwiatkowski who was way over the hill who stayed on just for the chance to skate in the Olympics. His skates were wonderful at Boston, so maybe that's enough for him no matter how he places. Fortunately he has Ashley as an inspiration every day.

I don't think he is going forward technically in future, despite actually I think he should throw more quads in program. He doesn't have anything to loose anyway. He will not move up without it, and it will be the same if he misses it

I have been a fan of Adam's since he was in juniors. He had such early success and then sort of got bogged down and, I felt, lost his confidence. Winning Nationals this year and then skating so well at Worlds has to have been a huge shot in the arm for him. I can't imagine him retiring before 2018. I think he'll work on additional quads and perfecting his jumps. His presentation is better than anyone's in the US and his choreography is always spot on. His consistency improved tenfold this year and I think he'll build on that. He is one of the more pleasing skaters to watch IMO and it isn't just jump! jump! jump! The quality of his skating skills and his determination is going to go far in the next two years.

Oh no, he is a witch, you can't kill him, he will keep coming back! :dev3::biggrin::devil:

Looking at his Worlds protocols, he really could not have done much more than he did. He skated very well and hopefully he can develop a somewhat consistent quad. I don't think he will ever compete with Patrick, Yuzu or Javier if they're somewhat clean but certainly if others like Boyang, Shoma or Denis are a bit off form Adam can beat them if he can do a quad.

Well that answers the question. So no retirement. Very happy we will see him next season. I am also happy that he will be doing less choreography for other skaters and focus more on his skating and training for next season.
Cannot wait to see his new programs!!!
And yes, I hope he ups his technique, which I imagine he will. He knows what he needs if he wants to make the podiums.

Oh dear, Ashley's outfit...

I haven't seen Adam this year but, when I saw him a little over a year ago I couldn't believe what good shape he's in. Now, he does a great job of costuming but, if there was one thing that stood out to me. Adam is much bigger in his lower body than his upper body.

I'll use Patrick Chan as an example. Patrick is quite well developed in his upper body and he looks almost like a feather weight body builder. Adam looks like a Ballet Dancer and is much slighter than he looks on TV.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that Adam is in great shape and could definitely continue as long as he stays free from injury.

I actually don't hate Ashley's outfit though I do think it's really old for her, or even for me and I'm a bit older, but holy crap do she and Adam clash. Do besties no longer discuss these things???

All I can say about Ashley's dress is that I'm glad she's keeping her missteps in the world of off ice fashion :slink:
So glad that Adam will ride this wave of success and stick around for a bit. I really think his deep friendship with Ashley is so beneficial to both, and will keep them strong through the Olympic year :hap10:
