Advice for forward lunges

I seriously hate forward lunges. I can never manage to keep the back leg from sliding. Advice? I've even managed to trip on my forward leg toe pick and fall on my forward knee doing lunges.

Shouldn't the back leg (or at least the back boot) slide? That's one of the major purposes of a lunge.

It may help to try to push the front heel down, and put your body center as far back as you can, consistent with the knee angle.

But I'll leave further advice on that to the experts.

I find back lunges (by which I mean lunges while moving backwards) a lot harder. If I don't get the foot high enough off the ice, I stumble on the blade. For me this is a combination of strength and flexibility. If my muscles were strong enough, I could fight my flexibility limits more easily.

Hey there~ I struggle with lunges too, and I'm still working on them so I'm not really in a position to give advice.

Take my suggestions with a grain of salt! I'm sure the advanced skaters/coaches either here or at the rink would be happy to give you some pointers as well.
Personally, I've found I slide less (I do the same thing as you, sliding on the back leg and then falling :dbana:) when I practice lunges in place at the boards/barrier and also putting more force on the scrape of the back leg. I also focus on making that back leg straight to avoid curving and sliding, and after reaching the lunge, I shift more of my weight off the back foot and get up.

Since this was posted more than a year ago, I hope your lunges have improved! <3
