Akiko Suzuki thread: a beautiful and brilliant performer!

Me, too! Her idol is Michelle Kwan. She brings a very different presence to ice than Michelle, but they both excel in performance quality and connection with audience. I love Akiko's skating -- it transcends the technical details and point-counting that most other programs/skaters seem to be obsessed with these days. Akiko shows that you can still have excellent artistic performances under the ISU system. You just have to be very skilled/talented, supported by great coaching/choreography, and be committed to the performance. It's not as though back in the 6.0 when the technical demands were much lower/less well defined, that competitive skaters were churning out one artistic performance after another! Great talents were always few and far in between.

Wonderful gala program. I love both of her SP and FS this year.

Akiko updated her blog after the competition. It made my eyes water.

“I skated at the Hershey Centre for the first time. Before I came to Canada I checked what the rink was like and found out that the venue was used for Skate Canada 2003.
Skate Canada 2003 was supposed to be a competition for me to make a debut at Ground Prix Series as a senior skater. However, I was ill at home in 2003 and couldn’t participate in it. I called up the Federation and told that I would withdraw. I remember it very well because after hanging up the phone, I burst into tears. It’s been eight years since then and I finally skated at the Hershey Center … in healthy shape.”

Then, she thanks her coach and her health. She says she's too shy to say thanks to him in person, so she uses her blog. :p

I’m so happy for her that she’s fully recovered from eating disorder and competes again. I really hope she will compete strong at worlds and finish on the podium. Go Akiko!!

She is so underrated and so humble! She is a star and I hope she would reap the success she really deserves especially for her passion and commitment for the sport. She belongs to my list of the best skaters ever along with Michelle Kwan and Janet Lynn! So much pure joy!

Definitely is. This could be her year. I expect her, Kostner, and Czisny to be the podium at Worlds in some order. If she skates her best the Gold is very possible.

I watched her live at SC. She's clearly class of the field. She surprised me quite a bit since I wasn't too impressed with her on TV in the past. TV really doesn't do justice to her. She was very fast and smooth, her jumps were quite strong, so were her spins. The performance level is head and shoulders above the other ladies. She always chooses dynamic music/choreography which is in sharp contrast with those picked by 99% of all other ladies out there. This is a further testiment to her technical/artistic capacity since 99% of women skaters simply are unable to catch up with dynamic music.

I hope she will win a gold medal at worlds next year.

Another thing I like her is that she's not your typical 'pretty princess' type of female skaters who need tons of makeup and be 'packaged'. She just uses her own skating to impress audience and finally make thos stupid judges have no choice but give her appropriate marks.
