Alena Kostornaia

So far so good. Although I personally expected a 3A, it is perfectly ok if she chose to go with the lighter layout.

Actually I just saw this (small interview after short):

Alena Kostornaya: "Before the morning workout, Tutberidze and Gleikhengauz told to roll lightweight content..."

Yes, she said at first she wanted to dispute that decision. But then she decided that this time, she’s just going to do everything as coaches say. :)

per https://www.sports.ru/figure-skatin...jnoj-aksel-v-proizvolnoj-ya-tochno-idu-a.html

Alena Kostornaya: "I'll go for the first triple axel in an arbitrary, and the second - it depends on the result of the first"

Sounds like a good strategy to me! Like Anna at Worlds not going for the 2nd Quad to avoid a +REP.

Fingers crossed the 3A serves her well tomorrow! She looked so happy with herself today and that's all I needed! I hope Aliona skates her best and just lets the chips fall where they may. 🥰

Well, I don't know about you all, but I am a nervous wreck! :dbana:

Of course I would love for Aliona to skate completely clean and win, but what I really want for her is to find her fighting spirit again. I want her to find that righteous indignation and "wounded pride" -- that part of her that said "I'm not a middle of the pack skater, so I will move to Team Tutberidze!" and that said "I don't want to go back to juniors, so I'm going to jump the 3A!" If she regains that confidence and that belief in herself, I totally think she can skate clean programs and make the Olympic team! 💪

But even if things don't work out as she hoped, or if the jumps are not quite there, what I really want to see is Aliona totally immersed in her programs. The reason why I thought "Lovely" was so good, and why I ended up loving "Twilight" even though I was initially skeptical, is because Aliona clearly loved those programs, and she was 1000% committed to them. She was living them on the ice. And that is what I hope to see again!

So GOO ALIONA GOO!! Skate your heart out!!! :hap10::hap10::hap10:

ETA I forgot to ask -- does anyone know if there's a free livestream? (I may or may not watch live depending how nervous I am, but in case I do... )
Nothing trumps "The Leftovers" tho'. No.thing.

Hey Guys!
How are we doing?

I'm happy to say that, even without the trixel today I saw Aliona.
Not a girld named Kostarnaia on the ice, but Aliona.
Not the best Aliona ever, but definitely recognizable starting from her simple presence on the ice with every movement being apparently effortless and natural, with an engaging exprexivity.
Great work from the team so far.
Recovering in sport is always hard because the payoff is not to rewarding like becoming the new best version of yourself but just to retrace your step to where you were before.

I had a look at the result and got curious about how the russian judge saw the girls compared to the panel in PCS
RUS / PANEL
LT 35.60 / 35.64
AK 35.20 / 35.73
KV 35.40 / 35.31

2 notes:
a) She did not judge in detail at all: the total (before the 0.8 conversion) are 44.50, 44.0, 44.25 ordered with the minimal possible difference. This is a common way to operate I don't agree with (it's ordinal like the old 6.0 system but it does not work when the PCS are summed to an absolute TES)
b) Aliona is 1st for the Panel and 3rd for the russian judge, meaning she's probably still paying the bad season she had.
Aliona PCS had always been more appreciated internationally than nationally, but 0.5 difference is not small.
Nothing to worry about I think: if the international panel will keep scoring high PCS there is no reason for the home judge to be stricks: she just have to skate better and better and she can do it.

I was not looking at this at all but I did found Judge #2 PCS scoring very strange (by "very" i mean that it sounded odd just looking at the table) so I made the calculation:

J#2 / PANEL
LT 38.20 / 35.64
AK 33.40 / 35.73
KV 33.20 / 35.31

She gave Liza a 5 point margin on PCS over both Aliona and Kamila.
Excluding the 3 russian ladies all the other scores are in line with the panel.
This in my opinion is score fixing.
Numbers do not lie and I don't believe in coincidences .
I'm not saying she's a secret lover of granpa Mishin or worse: it can be just blind prejudice, but this is how figure skating sinks into a sport where we end up counting revolutions in the air instead of searching for that impossibile balance bewteen pure skating, art and acrobatic skills.

A last comment on how she looked on the rink: Stunning does not even begin to describe her.

I can't wait for tomorrow!

McBibus!!!! You're so lucky that you get to see her live! I'm jealous!! Thanks for your live report!

I too am happy that we got to see a confident, committed, and commanding Aliona today! She was totally engaged and selling the program, which is exactly what I wanted to see.

However, I have to say that I am not sold on this program. 😐 I think the first part fits her like a glove -- it's smooth and slinky (like "Adios Nonino" and "Never tear us apart"), and I enjoy it, but I just feel like the second half doesn't fit her style. To me, the step sequence here feels a lot like the StSq in "You should see me in a crown" did -- the concept makes sense, and I can see that Aliona enjoys it, but the music is sharp and rough, and the choreo just does not seem to match; it doesn't hit hard enough. Aliona's skating is just too smooth and effortless, so to me it doesn't look right against the backdrop of this very harsh part of the song.

Personally, I think that for Aliona to have a good chance of making the Olympic team (and potentially even win), she needs to have an SP that the judges look forward to seeing, not one that they tolerate. If she can consistently score very high in the SP (once she adds the trixel), then I think that the RusFed would put her on the team so she can do the SP in the team event. But I'm not sure this program can do that for her. I think with the trixel, perhaps she can get back to the 85 level she reached before with this program, but I want her to have a program that the judges will want to give 90 to!

I can enjoy the program because I love Aliona and I can see that she loves it, but I think my grandma, or even my mom, would not enjoy the harsh vocals, and surely there are some judges that feel that way too.

Unfortunately, I think Team Tut doesn't really care how Aliona does, so I don't think they'll change anything.
And at this point, I'm not too sure what I would want them to do anyway. It's probably too late to try to make a brand-new program, so they could possibly repurpose one of her other programs (like "Lovely") as an SP, or she could pull a Yuzu and bring back "Angel" again. I know Aliona was tired of "Angel" by the end of the 2019-20 season, but that program did fit her skating perfectly (even if she didn't love it), and I think it has a higher scoring potential.

Of course, I could be totally wrong. If Aliona starts churning out clean programs with 3 big trixels and the other girls struggle, then perhaps the RusFed will back her, and the judges will score her generously no matter what program she has! I guess that's what I will root for! :hap10:

Nothing trumps "The Leftovers" tho'. No.thing.

I disagree -- I think "Adios Nonino" was the best SP (and perhaps the best program) she ever had. To me, that program is perfectly choreographed from start to finish -- which is also why I don't think she can use it now, with 2 of the jump passes moved to the beginning. I think it just wouldn't fit...
But perhaps they could give her a new tango with much of the same choreography! Oh well, a girl can dream...

Anyway, I'm super happy to see Aliona looking happy! I hope she can pull off a clean FS and end the competition a dazzling smile! :cheer::cheer2:

I'm so happy that you could see her and that it was great. I hope you'll have even more pleasure tomorrow.
Thank you for this very interesting comparison. I had not observed the scoring from each judge. This judge 2 has very strange scoring indeed. 33.2 for Kamila maybe because of the fall and all. But scoring Liza's components as high as Aliona's would be a stretch, what's 5 points above?
I hope judges will soon have AI fodder for their PCS scores too, not only for GOEs, though I hope they won't score mechanically over these data. But it will make guidelines.
