Alena Kostornaia

Now with all the sp scores in, it seems that the scoring this season might be in Alena's favor?:)

Let's wait till we see the FS and her score for it, shall we? :)

(but so far, she seems to be the luckiest out of 3A in their SP scores).

Figure skating goddess in the making! Sure she will become even better. Just one thing, nippicking of course: why now ugly plastic boots? Please eteri intervene.

I got too excited. I am afraid I might be doing some jinxing? I hate myself. Please ....

LOL, Alyona rides on brand new Edea Piano boots and titanium blades, the best gear money can buy and she is proud over it. Her old boots were only rated for doubles, her new ones are quad rated, and their stiffness might prevent another stress fracture now she is doing triksels and perhaps other ultra-si.

Was she even wearing the usual skating tights? Alina often also prefers to skate with bare legs, which is a brave thing to do for skaters.

Imagine going to your FIRST senior competition as the FIRST skater in the FIRST group and getting 34 PCS

It’s what she deserves.

It's certainly intimidating to the other contenders for first starting number in the free.

But Alyona shouldn't let this excitement get to her head, for the competition is only finished when she and her nearest competitors have finished their free skating routines.
I have no worries over this, she knows the drill, knows how to isolate herself from her emotions and approach tomorrow's free skate just like any other training session under the Crystal Dome.
She'll probably still fear the phone call from HQ though, with Eteri Georgiyevna calling her out on any small detail that caught her attention ....

Q: This is your first senior start. Very worried?
A: There wasn’t much excitement. I always do the same routine in training. Why should I go out in competition and not do the same? It's like how to ride a bike - once learned, you never forget.

This is very indicative of training habits and styles in the Tutberidze group. I'm glad she isnt letting the fact that this is her first senior competition get her nervous. She sounds like a steady competitor.

Also how AMAZING is it shes throwing 3As like we saw yesterday in only the last couple weeks?! That's crazy.

I love the back and the colours, not so keen on the top part of the front and the gloves but she still looks great and it suits the music. I’m maybe just biased because I’m not a fan of gloves. The colours really suit her. She always looks so light on her feet. Can’t wait to see this program improve through the season [emoji178]

Aliona demonstrating the power of the GOE. Everything about her performance screamed quality, yet she still thinks that she needs to work on spins and steps...
Gurl, do you want to drive judges insane? :D they’re already in love with you!
Let me tell ya, with good goe on her 3A, she’ll be breaking 85 at some point in her SP, easily!
I appreciate that she genuinely loves both her programs this year, showing us both an angel and the devil (vampire), her different sides.

Some of Aliona‘s lutzes.
For those who like to call her a flutzer, they need to check themselves.
She has an outside edge, she had some flat edges last year at gpf.
This year’s photo of her lutz is there too, not deep but clear outside edge, minimal prerotation and a pure toe pick.
When she’ll be less nervous and will be getting that perfect lutz 100% of the time, I’d say she’s pretty much a perfect all around skater.

Yes, I totally expect Aliona to set a new world record SP score if she lands that 3A from steps beautifully!
Second highest SP score of the season and highest senior debut SP score ever! :yes2:

What a gorgeous performance! Light, effortless, elegant...every movement perfectly placed... and those HUGE jumps!

I was starting to get worried when it took so long for her scores to came up (it reminded me of Anna's SP at Lombardia), but then 77.25 came up and I nearly jumped out of my chair (at work)!

I'm SOOO happy the judges gave her fair scores and decent PCS! :woohoo: Her GOEs on ALL of her elements from ALL of the judges were at least +3, which meant that she got more than +1 additional points for EACH element, for total GOEs of more than 10 points!

I loved Aliona's skating but I also am not a huge fan of the gloves. I do like the new dress, especially the back. :luv17: The longer skirt is nice, but I do wonder if it will get in the way of the 3A. Mao Asada used to talk about how a long skirt created a noticeable drag in the air when she tried to do 3As...

It's hard to believe that Aliona only started training the 3A seriously again after the test skates and that she was able to get it fairly consistent in ~ 2 weeks.

Just saw the skating order for the LP and Aliona skates last (right after Liza). First in the SP and last in the LP--guess she's stuck with extremes!
That will provide a very clear comparison for the judges (and us).
I hope she can land at least one 3A beautifully, but in my mind, she's already done what she needed to do at this tournament--show that she can be a contender with big scores even without a quad or 3A.

GOOO ALIONA!!! :cheer:

In the Espoo Trophy Finland, Alena KOSTORNAIA has retouched the personal record of the short program for the first time in career over over 77 (77.25).
In fact, it has gone much further as no skater has ever scored higher in the debut competition in the senior category.
On the occasion, the sixteen year old Russian has renounced the triple axel, which, unless changes of course, should be presented in the free program on Sunday.
In the season in progress, only the Japanese KIHIRA has obtained a better score (78.18 with triple axel). However, it should be noted that, in terms of program components, Medvedeva, although in another competition and with another panel, was considered superior to KOSTORNAIA by almost a point and a half (35.60 against 34.14).
In this regard, everyone makes their own considerations ...

So glad Aliona was able to start off the season with a strong, clean SP. Big airy jumps (although the toe loop could’ve had a better landing if we are nitpicking) and fast, centered spins. I also think her crossovers looked more powerful and smoother than at the test skates - maybe she was a bit less nervous since test skates were her first performance of the program.

Really looking forward to what Aliona can show in the LP. Hopefully a triple axel or 2 😍

I wonder what the LP dress will be...transformed dress or not..? I can’t decide. Regarding her new SP dress, I wish she would ditch the gloves and shorten the skirt a bit. To me, Aliona has some of the most expressive arms/hands and the gloves cut off her lines.

That's right! Leave no points at the door!

Was she kinda sorta too close to the boards? The air position of the 3T was fabulous.

Yeah it looked to me like she got a little spooked and took the landing on a sharper curve than she usually would. Not as perfect as Aliona’s usual standard, but still miles ahead of the rest of the field here. (In regards to combo jump execution) I think she might have done and extra back crossover before the split jump which set her pattern off. At test skates she did 3 and here she did 4.

A little late, but wanted to come here and congratulate Aliona on a sublime SP! Did anyone else notice in the K&C how she would stop to smile and pose for the pictures? I don't know why, I found that very endearing. Anyway, I'm so excited to see her FS tomorrow. I know it has gotten mixed reviews, but the more I watch it, the more I think it is perfect for her. The first section is very lyrical similar to the style she is known for, followed by a much darker section (Eyes on Fire) then the last part is just pure fun. It's clear she is enjoying herself while skating to it, and that's a joy to see. Good luck to our Aliona! I personally don't think she even needs the 3A to win here...
