Alena Kostornaia

The gesture of a gracious winner, but my best moment was when she had Anna (who was barely blocking her tears) to start dancing on the podium with her.

Yes. I am so glad that the three of them do have a good friendship, and can be good sports, whether winning or losing. They were so funny to watch when they danced on the podium!

Press conference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTrlzdxspKc. Considering some of the questions, I'd be looking at my mobile, too. :noshake:

Thank you for sharing this! I don't really like the questions that were asked at the start, especially the one posed to Anna about winning silver or losing gold. Let's not rub it in, shall we? The questions from the floor, though, were more entertaining, and I laughed so much when they all said together No to the question about going to Junior Worlds! And horsey Aliona is of course going to see the Lipizzaners if she can. A must for any horse-mad girls visiting Austria!

Aliona is still on her phone, I see, which makes me wonder if she is anything like I was at school, where I was still attentive, but needed to be busy while listening. In my case, that meant covering my books and later lecture notes with sketches, often to the dismay of the teachers. Perhaps she would do well with a fidget spinner instead of the phone in press conferences!

Alternative perspective of the press conference with some awesome eye-rolls by the translator (who I guess is either part of Rusfed or team Tutberize, as she is there for a lot of press conferences): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04LnEDyo2NU
That's Tatjana Flade. She's a German sports writer, and actually occasionally contributes articles to Golden Skate sometimes, so that explains why she's always around. She speaks Russian and English fluently, obviously, but I don't know if she just volunteers to translate for press conferences since she's there already. A lot of her journalism does seem to focus on the Russian ladies.

The eye rolls were awesome! :agree:

Well...At least Aliona looked at the people who were asking the questions today... I just hope that if the ladies have a public press conference like the men did (the one Aliona crashed), that she pays attention the whole time!

Hopefully she has a chance to see the Lipizzaners!

I realized that Aliona is now the first and only woman to score 240+ three times in a row! :agree:

This headline from the Japanese press about Aliona's victory made me laugh:
https://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20200126-00000038-dal-spo
"Kostornaya, the embodiment of beauty, successfully completed 2 triple axels to win for the first time. The 3 Russian ladies sweep the podium."

They are not wrong!

Some sparse comment on the press conference:

Shorter and much better than the SP conference: some (very long) questions there managed to bore me to death and were plain obvious or stupid.
Boring me while Aliona is on the screen is some real achievement :dev2:

I loved the 1st open question to Anna.
The questions by the moderator not so good too many "what if".
Yesterdaynight whichever skated clean would win, but nodody did so maybe a question on mounting pressure on their internal competition could be more interesting.
We know they would respond that they just think of skating clean but would worth a try instead of "how many chances did you think you had to win"

If you posed an interesting question to Aliona that allow her to express herself you will have a real reply.
"it's me who skates not the coaches" and compliments to Eteri for coming out with rarely used music

I really hope she could see those horses, I saw them in vienna when I was about her age and stilll remember the place and the show.

The way Aliona coordinated the group "NO" was hilarious.
I always have the impression that with her personality she's the one who sets the mood of the group.

Sasha's shiness is so sweet

I noted she was close to Aliona even when she stealed the men conference

Congratulation to Aliona our new European Champion! :hap10:

I just want her to let her body & mind rest for Worlds, I'm sure the 3Lz fall was a result of nerves because she was so off going into the muse part of her program.... I kinda expected something gonna happen I'm so sorry :sad4:

I was just able to watch Aliona’s performance because a kind soul posted a fan cam of it on youtube. Saying I am irritated with all of the copy rights and geo blocking in the US is an understatement

Anyways, Aliona performed very well, besides the lutz. I think that her opening triple axel- double toe was the best that we have seen her do in competition. She really made that triple look as easy as a double, I was amazed. In addition, her triple triple combination hit the beat of the music perfectly, that was another good highlight. The lite fall seemed harder than I thought it was, I hope Aliona is ok. I saw her check her arm for any cuts. One thing that is concerning me is that after both her long and short programs, it looks like she grabs/holds the left lower side of her back. I hope that her recent growth after nationals isn’t effecting her back. I didn’t notice her wearing any sports tape though, so maybe I am just being paranoid. Overall, congrats Aliona!! Get some rest and have fun in Graz!!

Aliona is already busy after her win. All the dance teams + ladies were there for an autograph session but Aliona wasn’t because she has a fotoshooting. I like that - companies should recognize her greatness! Hopefully she’ll get some more deals in the future.

Of course I was a bit sad not to get an autograph from her but I already have one from JGP Linz so I really can‘t complain.

Too bad you didn't casually bump into her during these days.
If you can find the time in the next days please share whatever you feel like to.

Particularly after the SP you sais "She IS a star"
I do agree but I'm curious about your personal why.

thanks

I think the 3Lz fall might have been because she pushed the outside edge too far. It was one of her best edges this season, but maybe she wasn’t used to it.

I'm really chuffed that she won again and proving to everyone once again that you don't need quads to be the queen. I had hoped for another clean performance just as the cherry on top of the cake, but that was too much hoping I guess. Still, very well done.

I was surprised though. I kinda expected Anna Scherbakova's performance to make her go on 1st place. I'm generally no fan of young girls breaking their bodies for the sake of sport/quads, but I have to admit that apart from that one fall, it was tremendous.

And because girls like Anna + Alexandra with their score-boosting quads, I have the sad feeling that Kostornaia won't be able to hold her 1st place for very long. :( I wonder if she'll be out next season (depending on how much Trusova improves and how many other girls start picking up quads).

She took several hard falls on her hip bone. And I've come across a photo where in her Bielmann position a big protective plaster was visible under her tights: https://s74794.cdn.ngenix.net/m/f19b/00fb/61c1/fcde/6c9c/d48b/3e43/eca9/1200_1200_max.jpeg, so one can expect her (and all the other skaters that have taken hard falls on hip bones, femur heads etc) to be bruised blue, purple and green. Battle scars for figure skaters.
