Alena Kostornaia

she reminds me a lot of Ashley Wagner in this respect who got A LOT of pushback and hate for not having a filter. these 2 girls don't fit the prim and proper, only saying the right thing princess image expected of lady figure skaters. some people hate it and think they should sit down and shut up, others respect them for it. personally i have a lot of respect for both of them.

Ashley is a great fan of Aliona herself (y)

and yet, sounding perfect like Anna does could actually mean that she's diplomatic (not a bad thing), she doesn't want to offend people or be criticized. Who knows what these girls have to endure from their coaches and parents or even other important people of the sport. If someone wants to stay in certain fields he or she has to learn how to keep their mouths shut. I wouldn't call this "phony". just "survival".
and to get sensless hatred on twitter accounts isn't pretty. one has to guard every word.
Then there are young women like Alena or Ashley who know how to take the hell that is thrown at them :D thus they speak their mind. of course not totally. otherwise we would hear an other level of interesting things :D Alena has a lot going on both on the outside and in the inside. We get to see only what she wants others to see. Every skater, and every person is like that.
if people were totally honest all the time, mankind would have died centuries ago.
one thing is for sure, you can't get bored with Alena!

That Anna appears diplomatic while Aliona outgoing reminds me very much of high school where my sister, only a year younger than me, was constantly telling me to keep my mouth shut because she is a sensitive soul and did not like hearing negative opinions about me or herself. And for me I would say “what negative opinions, from who?” and smirk thinking about how amusing it was that simply saying something— a preference for a song, or questioning the logic of an instructor after a lesson, was enough to get in people’s heads, to have them criticize me. Such things never bothered me but would ruin her day. I deeply respect Aliona for being able to look beyond an individual’s opinion of her because I am not someone who minces words, or who hides my emotions, but I can sympathize with those who are less comfortable with revealing the whole of their personality to such a large audience. And while I’d prefer everyone feel comfortable in expressing these emotions, I don’t think either is right or wrong. It is a very personal thing how one wishes to present themselves, and how they wish to be perceived.

I really like this discussion going in right now, many interesting viewpoints! So, thank you for that, everyone. :) I’d like to add my own:

Perfection can be boring. I‘ve found that, ironically, my favorite skaters, the ones I really care about on a personal level, tend to be those who many label as having a “difficult personality“. Yulia Lipnitskaya, Zhenya Medvedeva, Ashley Wagner and now Aliona. There‘s not a lot I haven‘t heard. They‘re drama queens, attention seekers, emotional, can’t keep their mouths shut, too extroverted, too introverted, obnoxious, pretentious, liars...

And honestly? A lot of the time, when people say “difficult“, all they mean is having agency. Knowing what you want and going for it without regrets is often met with a certain disapproval, especially by those who want these girls to be the typical “ice princess“ - a delicate fairy, quiet, diplomatic, obedient, always nice to everyone. Now, there‘s nothing wrong with being like that but there‘s nothing wrong with having edges as well. For someone like me, who often hides her emotions behind a smile and only lets the real thoughts shine through in the sarcastic undertone of her answers, it is very refreshing to see someone as young as Aliona being so unapologetically herself.

I‘m not saying she‘s perfect because she isn‘t. She makes a lot of mistakes - visible mistakes - and she can behave disrespectfully. But in the end, we‘re all made of different shades. Isn‘t that a great thing? I appreciate diplomacy, sure, but sometimes this kind of perfection frustrates me as well. “I want to thank my coaches and my fans and I‘ll work hard.“ Of course! But what do you REALLY think? Now, I realise that none of these athletes is obligated to tell me anything. (and if I were in their shoes, I’d probably keep my mouth shut, too. Keeps the haters at bay) But that‘s why I appreciate it even more if they choose to speak frankly.

We‘re living in an era (and not just in relation to figure skating) where every word you say, can be twisted and misunderstood. And if you‘ve made that experience a few times, of course, you‘re going to be more careful. I think that‘s a problem. Really, it‘s easier said than done, but I feel like we‘d all live a little easier if we were more accepting of imperfection. Both in actions as well as in words. We‘re humans, we make mistakes - the important thing is to learn from them! That obviously doesn‘t mean we should let go of our filter completely, with no regard for the feelings of others. But a little less demand for perfection and more appreciation for honest imperfection would hurt no one. On the contrary.

In short: I like Aliona (and the others I have mentioned) because she‘s not only a phenomenal skater but because she has edges and is not afraid to show them. And if some call her “difficult“ for that - good for her. In most cases it just means she‘s been honest to others and herself and they can‘t handle it. The truth isn‘t always diplomatic and neither are we. As long as we don’t hurt anyone with that honesty (and this is probably the most important point and something everyone has to learn - knowing when it‘s okay to be frank), I say: Deal with it.

So Aliona had a meeting with fans in Kazan a few days ago -- and at least she was wearing her mask properly then!

But what really caught my eye was Aliona's handbag, which you can see a bit more clearly here:

I'm *pretty* sure that she's carrying a DIOR handbag--like this one!!
(In the video you can kind of see the big "O" decoration when it catches the light.)

And I think I might know when she got it too -- at the Test skates!
In this video here, there's a guy getting something out of the car, and if you look closely around 0:17, you can see "DIOR" written on the side in spiky letters:

So I guess Aliona's getting fancy presents now?? That's cool!

Now, I know that Aliona *loves* GUESS stuff, but it has always been my hope that she'll get a sponsorship from a luxury brand like DIOR. (See for my example, my post here.)
I'm still hoping that Aliona gets a contract with a luxury brand.

So here's some fan art of Aliona x Dior:

I have to admit that I have this fantasy where Natalia Vodianova, a Russian supermodel, happens to see Aliona perform and becomes a fan, and then gets her fiance, Antoine Arnault, heir to the LVMH group (which owns Dior!), to sponsor Aliona...

I can totally see her in an ad for handbags, or for DIOR makeup, or for some earrings or jewelry.
Make it happen, Yana & Plushy!!:biggrin:

Here's a version of Aliona's interview (the one where she reads Tweets about her) with English subtitles:

I echo many of your sentiments--I love that she speaks her mind and doesn't care what anyone else thinks!

Thank You plenty
6:01 look at her Inna Bauer. She really seems to have some back pain.
