Alexander Petrov

Congratulations to Alexander Dmitriyevich Petrov, the 2015 Russian Junior National Champion! :cheer:

Yes, he won, he did it! Maybe not the way he wanted to skate, but after Europeans and Universiade, I think I'll take this.

Crazy crazy competition where the top 3 going into the FS all bombed. Must have been nailbiting to watch it live!

Edit:
I just watched it. Bizarre fall on the 3Z-2T and then that completely played with his mind on the following 3Z which has a difficult entry. So he fell on that too. Thank goodness the next jump is the 3Loop (his favourite) so he managed to recover well. But he got up immediately after both falls, so he fought hard.

Yeah, I think the previous version was too jarring? At least that was the criticism coming from many quarters.
I think the new version is a bit better. But either way, I hope he gets a stronger LP next year. There's nothing majorly wrong with the current one (outside of the Plushy-circa-1998 outfit. YMMV), but it's just not very... memorable? I like the SP and how it showcases his already-present command of the ice, but the LP doesn't seem to have a solid theme or emotion to convey.

Comments from Sasha:
"Alexander Petrov won the championship of Russia in Yoshkar-Ola. After the competition, the skater said something to him to work.

"In any program alarmed. Told the press, because the lead after the short program. Do not have time to prepare after a workout. But it is certainly not an excuse.

In any program fell on the second jump in the cascade and Lutz. Perhaps too spilled in the short program. At the beginning I had the arbitrary, then what happened ... I can not explain.

The main conclusion which made for himself, to roll over the program before the World Cup. Work and work that does not get tired. Cooking quad. Without it, there is nothing even jump in six. In general, I will prepare mentally and physically, "- said Alexander Petrov."

So essentially Sasha said he has no idea why he fell twice. I think he was nervous. Favourite for gold but slim lead. He has to learn to cope with pressure better. But it's good that he has a positive attitude still.

You know, to be honest, Sasha has by far exceeded my expectations with what he's done with that LP music. When I first heard it at Ljubljana, I thought "what a &^%&$ piece of music for skating". He's actually sold it decently well, better than any of the other young Russians could have. But a weak piece of music remains a weak piece of music. It's very limiting and there's only so much one can do with it choreographically. It was a poor choice on his part.

LP costume was inspired by Yagudin's Winter I think.

Congratulations indeed!

Uncharacteristically many mistakes, weren't there though, even aside from the 2 falls? I hope he's got the jitters out of his system and can come back strong for JWCH!

His SP is a great program - one of my favourites of the season any discipline. The FP is "merely" all right. But... that's okay. How many skaters have two equally good programs? I'd like to see a better one next season, of course, but this isn't bad or anything.

Yes, you are right! I must think more positively.

One of the ice dance couples uses Sasha's SP music for their SD. I can't remember their names but I remember thinking how their performance paled in comparison to his.

I agree, Sasha sells it much better than other juniors would. But imagine if his LP were as strong as his SP... (Though as he says in the interview, getting the jumps and the quad out there is probably much more important).

Lol, I see the Winter-ness now, but I will say... of the things to admire in Yagudin's Winter, the outfit is pretty low down on the list.

This quad business is making me very curious. I mean I've seem Aliev's quad, Samarin tried at at Senior Nats, even Lazukin and Kurbanov have attempted it in competition. While I understand the need not to rush things, the lack of even a practice video makes me feel just a little bit antsy.

Lol, is this going to become the Russian equivalent of all the Jason Brown flak? "Sasha, you skated very well, but where's the quad? Quadquadquad." :drama:  I personally wouldn't mind if he saved the quad 'til seniors.

What could be worrying is that interview where he mentions being more comfortable with 4Lo. Great way to make history, but I wonder how stable a 4Lo can be... seems like toe or salchow are best for integrating the quad into the program, instead being hit-or-miss.

I wouldn't be this antsy if he didn't keep talking about it in interviews!
He'll go with 4T first I believe. That's what he said in August, that if they do introduce a quad this season, it will be 4T. But August was months ago, so who knows.
