Alexander Petrov

From the skaters' instagram posts, it seems the group arrived back in SPB on Monday afternoon.

On facebook yesterday, Benoit Richaud posted a congratulatory message to Sasha for his performance at Nationals. He also "liked" Mishin Camps' message (which I have quoted in the previous post), so maybe he'll be at the camp in May. Who knows.

As usual, beautiful hand movements from Sasha.
The floppiness of the hair is really first-class. lol
I also like the red training shirt the best.

"When you find something you truly love, you yourself will be surprised at how much you are capable of."
I really like this quote, it's so appropriate to describe his skating. :luv17:

Some comments about the Winter Youth Olympics...

Maybe you've seen it or maybe not but there has been an official list of Russian figure skating candidates for the Youth Olympics floating around VK and Russian forums/news blogs recently. It's not new, the list was drafted months ago (it's been on the Russian Olympic Committee site for some time now) and it contains all the names of skaters who fulfill the eligible age requirements and have achieved a certain level in the sport (AlexRus posted it in the event thread previously). Of course Sasha is on that list as well as some others whom you can roughly guess. According to one of the ISU communications, the preliminary deadline for submission of entries for all sports at the Youth Olympics is 18th Jan. Thereafter, changes to the entries list can be made but only under certain circumstances (I'm not sure what those are). 18th Jan is before Euros and before Junior Nats. However, as we all know, there is sometimes a certain amount of unspoken leeway regarding deadlines. In any case, we should know by late January who the Federation is sending. As mentioned before, the Youth Olympics also clashes with the Russian Cup Final, so if Sasha is sent, it remains to be seen which of his coaches will go along with him to Lillehammer.

This is an article about Medvedeva but it has some relevance to Sasha so I'm posting it here:

"MOSCOW, January 13. / Correspondent. Veronica Sovetova TASS /. The winner of the championship of Russia on December's figure skating Evgenia Medvedeva in Yekaterinburg will not take part in the upcoming February Second Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer (Norway). This Tass reported in the Figure Skating Federation of Russia (FFKKR).

Athlete entered into an expanded team of Russia in figure skating for the Games, made public last summer. According to the rules of the Games, singles can participate skaters born between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2001. In dance and competition sports pairs - between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2001. for partners and 1 January 1997 to the partners. "Evgenia age made the list, but it already appears in the rank of masters, as well as selected for the upcoming Bratislava European Championships - told Tass deputy director general FFKKR Galina Golubkov. - In two places we claim competitive athletes, including Polina Tsurskaya (winner of the Junior Grand Prix Final), Maria Sotskova, Serafima Sakhanovich. But there is still the championship of Russia among juniors in Chelyabinsk, in many respects it will be decisive..."

So even though the official deadline is 18th Jan, it seems that the Fed will make their decision after Junior Nationals. Typical.

Is it possible that Sasha is sent to both youth olympics and junior worlds? (I mean of course everything is possible and all that but is it realistic?)

Because if it is only one or the other I guess it would be better to send him to jwc, mostly because of the schedule of the competitions since the youth olympics is pretty close to Europeans.

It's more than possible. There is no rule that you can't go to both. And Junior Worlds is 3 weeks after Youth Olympics.

There are also two weeks between Euros and the Youth Olympics. If skaters can be sent to alternate GPs (eg. SC and TEB), then why should he not be able go to Euros and Youth Olympics unless either his coach or the Federation does not want him to.

So ultimately if he doesn't go to either the Youth Olympics or JWs or both, it's because his coach or Federation did not want to send him there.

"Group of famous figure skating coach Alexei Mishin has collected in Tartu (Estonia), in preparation for the European Championships in Bratislava (Slovakia), and the final of the Russian Cup in Saransk. Some details of Alexei Mishin told the special correspondent of the portal TEAM RUSSIA-2014 Boris Jodorowsky.

- Collection of Tartu was great - said Alexei Mishin. - Skaters are not distracted by either the school or the parents or friends. All have been set only on the job.

After a sensational third place in the championship of Russia Alexander Petrov said that it's not possible to go to the European Championship without a quadruple jump. He will show him it in Bratislava?
- He will show a fabulous exhibition number, which will go "encore". In it, Sasha reveals all the facets of his talent. Quadruple is in our approach, but at the European Championships will not take risks. To eat pies, they must first bake.

For the current European champion and World Cup of Russia Elizaveta Tuktamysheva will replace international competitions?
- Lisa is very interesting stage in life. She did not need to put super-to get in shape to the nearest responsible starts. In Tartu, we have put her new show room and a new short program that Lisa rolls with great pleasure. And we made short such that no one would have thought in advance.

Reveals the secret?
- It will be a waltz. A significant number for me to put a pep song since my youth.

After the championship of Russia, you said that, perhaps parted with someone from their own group of skaters. It is already there have been some changes?
- Our team remain united. And it is very well organized."

I have so much to say about this but no idea where to start.

I'm glad that Mishin has finally acknowledged that Sasha is very talented. But I didn't expect that it would take "Just a Gigolo" for him to realize/say it. :sarcasm:

And secondly, let's not expect any quad at Euros. Because clearly although Sasha wants to do it, Mishin is quite reluctant. Either that or the injury is still a problem. It's been awhile since Sasha posted anything on instagram.

As for someone wanting to leave... not a surprise. But it seems to have been settled.

I did suspect that Sasha is more keen on the quad than Papa Mishin - but then, that is no surprise, really. It's a good sign that Sasha is eager to do them - and that Papa Mishin has a tight hold on the reins; we've seen what happens to people who push themselves before they are ready. I want Sasha to have a great quad - but a consistent one. Until it's ready in practice to Papa Mishin's satisfaction, it won't be in the program, I'm sure. Of course, there will then probably be teething problems to get it consistent in competition - but that is another matter.

Also, a watz for Liza? I'm intrigued! - I hope there will be videos from the Russian Cup final, as I suppose that would be our first chance to see it? Maybe Papa Mishin felt that she needed something soothing, after Carmina seemed to rattle her - drain her emotionally, I mean.

Oh, apropos the quad, I'd also like to add, that considering what Sasha said about his injury:

"Week and a half before the Russian championship, I again very seriously twisted his leg, and I found microbreak in ligament. In a toe loop it hurts."

I'm guessing that he hasn't been allowed to train it since for fear of aggravating the injury. So, that might be a reason it mightn't be ready for Euros. Disclaimer: Just my speculation, obviously.:)

Yes, that was what I was alluding to in my previous post when I said that the injury might still be a problem. He only did edge jumps in his EX at Tartu and there's been no update from him since the 6th.

However, if injury is an issue that is preventing him from fully training the quad, then Mishin should come out and say it directly. Because his skater is getting some flak over this issue when it is essentially just one jump. :rolleye:

I don't recall that Mishin was ever prone to discussing his skaters' fitness and injuries in much detail - or not often. We Plushy ubers have often been in the dark because of that as well. Uncertainty is just something one gets used to with Mishin.

He was not opposed to discussing or at least mentioning Sasha's illness last season, neither was he opposed to talking about Liza's fatigue issues in the Blade Boys interview or in other interviews he gave in Dec.

Edit:
This is also not about people dealing with "uncertainty". But rather that if you're going to come out and say 2 weeks before a major competition that your skater is not going to do so and so element, then there should be an explanation about it beyond just "will not take risks". Because when he says that, Sasha gets bashed, not just on forums/VK but by other coaches.

A photographer who was at Nationals and attended the practice sessions has been writing a series of entries regarding her feelings and experiences at the tournament.

This is what she had to say about Sasha today:
"Sasha Petrov literally hovered over the ice. I lost count how many times he hung out in a completely horizontal position. And, yes, such a beautiful male hovering, I did remember that Yagudin, although perform almost everything, and I often like - usually catches the attention..."
