Yagudin has the most 6.0's for any male singles skater at the Olympics. And well deserved for a brilliant performance. His 6.0's at Worlds were equally memorable, you are correct.

Well, according to the Blades On Ice magazine Yagudin´s Olympic 6,0´s were a gift. Besides he was the last to skate. His performance in Worlds was excellent, but in my opinion his Olympic performance was not brilliant, it was hesitant and he was playing it safe. And that showed very clearly.

Well, and according to the majority of the audience that night in SLC, many commentators around the world, as well as many skating fans, those 6.0 were fully deserved LOL Nothing new here, just as there's nothing new there in what you wrote. It was heavily debated in the past, anyway.

I suppose there will always be people who don't like T/D Bolero, people who don't enjoy Kurt Browing's skating and of course, people who will never like Yagudin no matter what he does or doesn't :)

If I remember well, another one who didn't agree with the 6.0's Yagudin got was Scott Hamilton  The biggest joke of SLC (IMHO) - Yagudin conceding the program to GOEBEL

 That's too funny! The GPF only existed for 2 Olys!

Did you guys know that George Washington was the FIRST US president? That's a feat that no one has ever been able to beat!

Who Was the First President of the United States?

The obvious answer is George Washington but this is incorrect.

The United States of America was actually formed on March 1, 1781 with the adoption of The Articles of Confederation by Maryland whose delegates delayed its ratification over a western border dispute with Virginia and New York. Upon the March 1 ratification the President of the Continental Congress officially became President of the United States in Congress Assembled.

To make matters even more perplexing some historians claim that John Hanson was the first President of the United States as he was the first person to serve the full one-year term (1781-82), under the ratified Articles of Confederation. This again is incorrect.

The ratification occurred during the term of Samuel Huntington who served as President from September 28, 1779 to July 6, 1781. Consequently, Samuel Huntington was the first President of the United States in Congress Assembled.

:D

 PracticeMakesPerfect, that history lesson was a lot more interesting than fighting over whose 6.0s should count and whose shouldn't, LOL!

But thanks for making my point by discounting Michelle's considerable accomplishments. You can't please all the people all the time, I guess.

About him having the most 6.0s of any male FSer in Olympics history... I have a question: Has 6.0 always been the top score in FS events from inception of the event's history in the Olympics? I seem to remember a time when 10.0 was the top score, but perhaps this was only for fluff or pro comps? Has it always been 6.0?

Sorry, but not counting 6.0s at national championships isn't my invention at all, actually I like Michelle, but why don't just have a look at this thread:

Like it or not, it's usual standard.

Well, I'm disappointed. I thought I was going to read about how shameless (or even worse) he was by showing so much skin in a photo, and here's a boring argument about who and where got the most 6.0s., and why some should, and others shouldn't count. I find it incredibly chauvinistic! ;)

Jaana, when I saw Kathleen Bangs' name there, I just knew we'd hear from you. You can't let it go, can you? As for your question, I'm sure you can do better. He only pays her to promote him? Why not spice it up a bit, eh? Don't you think they must be lovers, as well? Btw, much more interesting question would be who pays you. http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/windspirit6/sm/yazgroup.gif "According to the Blades On Ice magazine Yagudin's Olympic 6,0's were a gift"? Boy, you're really catching at straws now.

Well, I love Alexei to pieces, and of course we all know he has a quite "exposureable" bod :D, but sorry, can't help, to me he looks kinda silly on this certain pic.
It certainly made my day! http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/windspirit6/sm/winksmile.gif I'd prefer to see more legs, but I think I can live with that, lol.

???

Hi, Paula. Nobody has answered my query yet, so I'll ask you directly, if you know. Maybe my question wasn't clear, or no one knows??

From the very first Olympic games until Yagudin's win with the "most ever 6.0's for a male skater at Olympic games", has 6.0 always been the top mark possible, or did say Dick Buttons, and older champions, get marked based on a different scale, say 10.0?

??

Practice Makes Perfect, good question you have about the pre-6.0 scale in skating. I know there WAS a different scoring system way back when, but I don't know what it was, or exactly when. So all of our 6.0 records and dilemmas aren't from the beginning of time, just the beginning of the 6.0. And now we (potentially) have a new judging system to mess with our "who's the best ever" discussions. Maybe someone here will be able to answer your great question!

I had a great laugh over your first President of the U.S. post. It seems that nothing we know as fact (best, first, most) can be counted on. Good lesson. Thanks for your intelligence and wit!

Wind Spirit and Jaana, I'm very curious about your comments on Ms. Bangs. I've read the article again, and don't find it to be particularly "promotional" any more than articles by other writers. Please enlighten me!

Gosh Practice, I don't know. I felt like I just ran a marathon after finishing with the US, Canadian, and Russian Nat articles, so I have little brain cells left right now. Need to go regroup and get some rest.

To my knowledge, the eligible system has always been based on the 6.0 system whereas Pro-AM events have used the 10.0 system. This could be where some of the confusion lies as eligible skaters have earned "10s" in these events.

Only Jaana can enlighten you (and me, too, while she's at it), because I was just kidding.

All I know about Ms. Bangs is that she's a freelance writer who has already contributed to GS a few times:
http://www.goldenskate.com/writers/bangs.shtml She's also a former commercial pilot (now, that's a fascinating piece of information).

Jaana seems to think Bangs spends too much time writing about Yagudin (I've seen two articles), when she could be writing about some American skaters instead. I asked about the rationale behind it (...a freelance writer...hello?...a freelance writer...), but never got a reply. I guess that for some people even one thing about Yagudin is too much. Yet they come back every time there's a talk about him. It must be his magnetic personality. ;)

Btw, has Phil Hersh been hired by Michelle? ;)

mismini: Isn't the internet great? All the interesting facts they have to leave out of textbooks (understandable. how could the poor kids carry all that baggage?), and of course all that other interesting non-fact stuff too (like to-drool-for-pics) yippeee ;-D

Paula, thanks for replying. I thought maybe I was just remembering the 10's from pro comps.

Should we also negate this accomplishment because of the new code of points, where a "perfect score" is now impossible? Oh heck, while we're at it, lets take away Michelle's accomplishments too, those 35 6.0's don't mean anything anymore, right?

I have no idea what this is all about.

My whole point was that Yagudin has so many credits to his name as it is, that there is no need to start making things up just to make him look good.

The quote clearly made it seem like he was the only skater to win Euros, Olys and worlds in the same season, and it's simply not true.

If they meant GPF, Olys and worlds, well then Kulik was his only competition and the guy didn't go to worlds, so it's not like Yagudin suceeded at something Kulik failed at.

Comparing it to 6.0s is silly, IMHO, as the 6.0 system has been in place for decades, possibly even a century. With the 6.0 comparison, Yagudin is up against anywhere from 10 to 20 guys. With the GPF comparison, it's just him against Kulik. In other words, having the highest grade in my class of 100 students was a major acomplishment. Having higher grades than just my one brother, not so spectacular.

Why poor MK was dragged into this, I'll never know.

If you think that I was trying to put down Yagudin and/or that I don't like him you're completely wrong.

If you think that I was somehow insulted by an MK dig because I'm some sort of crazed fan, well, wrong again.

I was just getting a chuckle out of the seemingly endless mistakes that skating journalists seem to make. Is research really that hard?

A magazine is usually only published once a month - sometimes less. By the time a timely article comes out, there could be major changes AFTER printing has occurred. This was one of thse cases. It happens quite a bit.

This is one of many exhausting battles a journalist cannot always win.

Then you have what's called an editor. Many times an editor will change a word here or a phrase there without the journalist's knowledge. In many cases, the editor will not send the journalist a final proof. Another nightmare.

What Paula said.

In fact, as for timing, it's often worse than that. Articles sometimes do not appear until months after they have been written. (This is my pet peeve with skating magazines like Blades on Ice and International Figure Skating -- they run articles about the World Championships along about in August some time.) I think this accounts for why Kathleen Bangs can say things like, "Alexei Yagudin dominates figure skating" (present tense), and can speculate about whether he will compete in the 2006 Olympics. This was written before Alexei announced his retirement from competition.

About 6.0s, I did a little counting and found that in major international events it is the ice dancing judges that are most free in giving out these these marks (no surprise there). Men are next, with dozens of 6.0's having been given out in the last several years.

Hardest to get are 6.0s in ladies. In fact, in women's competition, has anyone besides Michelle gotten a 6.0 at a World Championship since 1996?

Well Jaana, I don't know what you were watching but I thought his skate was one of the best and one of the best of the Man In the Iron Mask program. Perfection on ice IMHO!!
