American Idol 4/24-4/25 -- and beyond??

I think voices like Blake don't make it on this show because they have 1.5 minutes to make an impression. The power singers take the crescendo into the rafters and blow everyone away (ie Kelly, Clay, Melinda, etc)

I'm not saying they aren't good, but maybe if they had to sing a full song

ITA. And couple that with the mentality of "You Can't Sing Unless You Can Shriek" that seems to have pervaded pop music over the last 15 years or so. (I blame it on Mariah Carey; don't just sing a song if you can shatter all the glassware!!), so I think most people EXPECT our pop idols to be less than subtle. I actually think there's a difference between a BIG voice and a BIG OVERDONE voice, and there have actually been few on AI that cross the line into "overdone", tho Jennifer Hudson definitely comes to mind. I mean, does EVERYTHING have to be a full-blown ARIA???? LaKisha has actually come close to trodding on the line a couple of times this season, but has yet to go
completely overboard; hopefully she will keep it that way.

OK, in all fairness, you can argue that Fantasia crossed the line several times too (a friend of mine bought her new CD and dismissed it as 40 minutes of "raspy shrieking"), but I'll admit prejudice on my part when it comes to her.

I think Carrie managed to win it without resorting to this approach, tho. You just never know what type of thing is going to work from year to year -- Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia, Carrie, Taylor -- that's a pretty diverse group.

AMEN:bow: :agree: I so agree. It seems people are more interested in "tricks" than just good singing anymore. I remember when (not that long ago) a man who could hold a solid even note without any vibrato was understood for it being more difficult, but people want tricks, so we get all that "caterwauling" going on now days.

Well Kelly's win seemed to push the idea that you have to belt it baby on the show... but she's proven over and over again she's got more than just a big voice...

Here's a fun little feature the San Diego Union-Tribune runs every Monday:

http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20070507/news_lz1c7idol.html

I don't know why they run it on Mondays, when Tuesday or Wednesday would make much more sense (or even Thursday), but there ya go.....

(Wish it had occured to me to post this link earlier in the season when the competition still had its -- er -- oddballs and some of the commentary was especially priceless. But I have a tendency to be a bit of a ditz.... )

Thanks JonnyCoop for posting the site. I disagree with this comment though.
Melinda has the best voice, but lacks charisma.
Not sure I understand what the writer means by her lacking charisma.

I'm relatively certain that it has to do with the current American mentality in sports and entertainment that if you're just a nice, simple, down-to-earth person without an attitude of some sort, you're dull as dirt.....:sheesh: LaKisha has the attitude, Blake has the quirks, and Jordin has the joyful energy; Melinda, compared to those 3 is just a very nice woman who can REALLY REALLY SING. Rather dull, from a media perspective, but not a thing wrong with it at all.

WOW. Tonight was a little rocky.... I really thought we were in for a treat, given the talent remaining and the theme, but I think the ship sprung a few leaks this evening. Wow.

Anyway --

ROUND ONE

1. Jordin -- Very good, but she HAS been better. I give the nod to Jordin in round one in part because, given some of what came before, for her to just go out there and sing the song nice and straightforward was quite refreshing.

2. LaKisha -- Despite a few "off" spots, I really liked this a lot and I'm not entirely sure why. Her register IMO for this was a bit too low, but she was NOT screaming, at least not IMO. (Shut up, Simon! ). It had a very cool, contemporary feel to it and as a bonus -- FINALLY I understood the lyrics!! This is one of those songs where I've never been able to figure out ONE word that was being sung, and at least LaKisha, unlike the Bee Gees, sang this at NORMAL SPEED so I could figure out the lyrics!! A 30-year mystery has been solved for me!! (Actually, AI is a great show for this type of thing; most contestants have a tendency to ENUNCIATE better than most recording artists, so often a misunderstood lyric has been cleared up for me on this show.)

3. Melinda -- This would have been 2nd, only -- two words -- LaToya London. This is one of my favorite Bee Gees songs, and the LAST time I heard it was when LaToya did it during Season 3; her performance of that IMHO was one of that season's highlights and one of my all-time favorite AI renditions. And strangely, I just HAD A FEELING Melinda was gonna pick this one. Well -- Mindy Doo (as she is known in some circles apparently) was good, but I like LaToya's version much better. Much more straightforward, Melinda's was kind of all over the place in the vocal range category.

4. Blake -- I think the best way to sum this one up is: ???????????????????????????????????????
It was cool, I geuss, but I haven't the slightest idea whether I liked it or not. I liked the beatboxing at the end of "dancin, yeaaaah" but he should have left the rest of it out, and his pitch was all over the place. Sometimes the falsetto (a vocal concept I have only limited, if that, fondness for to start with) was fine, sometimes it could perm hair. I had to agree with Randy, it was like something in a weird European nightclub, and Blake already radiates a bit much "Now Is The Time On Sprockets Ven Ve Dance" as it is. I've come to the conclusion that he may just be a little avant-garde -- if that's the right word -- for "American Idol." But I do admire his ability to think outside the box, at least, even if at times the box needs to be closed and shut with a whole roll of strapping tape.....

ROUND TWO

1. Jordin -- LOVED IT!! JORDIN IS BACK, BABY!!  Tho I do not entirely disagree with Simon that it was a bit on the "pageant" side. What killed me was Barry Gibb saying how different her take on it was from Streisand's. Um -- can you honestly expect ANYONE to be on THAT level?? Come on here.

2. LaKisha -- Nice, simple, straightforward, and quite lovely. I actually LIKED the fact that she "hoarsed out" at the very end; I think it made a much nicer end than dragging the note out for 25 seconds. And given the problem LaKisha tends to have with ending the song properly, I think it worked in her favor.

3. Blake -- I agree that with a little work, you could release this at the present time and it would probably do pretty well. Not spectacular, but pretty good; at least I wasn't sitting there thinking, QUIT IT!!! Weird song, tho.

4. Melinda -- Getting past the fact -- and it ain't easy -- that I ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY HATE THAT SONG WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING, I still have to say that this is the first performance by Melinda that I officially ABSOLUTELY HATED. Turning a slow song into some type of Metropolitan Opera Audition, turning up the "aria" thing NEVER wins points with me. WAY too much going on here (which was part of the problem I had with her first song, too). It was just, for me, "meh."

Much as it pains me to say it, because I really DO like him, I think it's time to say, Blake, you're cute and quirky and talented, but you gotta go because you are actually now really starting to get on my nerves. And I believe I may be speaking for many others as well.:disapp:

Never mind. Figured it out. It originally posted as "double wide" compared to the other, standard-width posts; it was because I originally put way too many question marks in the Blake entry....

Carry on....

Great post JonnyCoop. I, too, think that Jordin outshined everyone tonight. One of the first times I disagreed with Simon's comments. I thought Jordin looked lovely and loved the song. I'm not quite sure what Simon meant by you're 17, soooooo Simon, can't a 17 yr old look elegant or at the very least grown up???

Tough week for Melinda and LaKisha.

Blake, Blake, Blake, ummmmmm. Please don't dance!!!!!!!

Hey, taste is taste, and I mean this in a "joking fun" way - You like Billy Ray's moves, but not Blake's?

Just having fun Dee.;) Ya know I luv ya!

Sean, sweetie, I did not ever, ever, ever say I liked Billy Ray's moves; what I said was he should get an "A" for effort. Someone who danced every week and who KNEW they were bad but did it anyhow and got such horrible scrutiny deserved an "A", just in my opinion.

Blake didn't have to dance, it's not a dancing competition, IT'S A SINGING COMPETITION!!!. I'm glad Randy finally reminded Blake of that.

Sean, I know you like to tease me!!!

I thought this was a lousy top 4 choice

but it harks back to season 2 - because BeeGees were half of the theme that year... and Josh Gracin and Clay Aiken sang 'To Love Somebody' ... and I liked Josh's more than Clays

and that I still remember all of that is quite sad lol

This is also normally where someone really deserving of STAYING gets booted. So we shall see.

As for who rocked it out - Jordin was the only decent performance on BOTH songs.
Melinda and Lakisha tie at one good one bad - both rebounded in the second one IMHO
Blake didn't have a great night, but if I had to pick I'd keep him and boot Lakisha... her lisp and attitude(mainly ignoring any and all advice given to her by those that are actually recording artists... um, ya might want to at least listen) really grate on my nerves....

Certainly his dance skills are an improvement over those of Mr. Taylor Hicks, who was just plain
Well when you put it in that context, I would have to agree.

I don't think Lakisha has a lisp as much as she has a tongue thrust. So if we want to go there...........What is wrong with Blake's mouth. It looks like his doesn't have teeth on the top... too much beat boxing and blew them out??

Well, no-one CRIED because Simon was a big old meanie  , like Jasmine did in Season 3 and Nikki in Season 1 at this same point, so maybe we won't have a weird result at this point after all. (Tho given the 4 remaining, no matter who gets the boot, a fair percentage of people are gonna think it's a "weird result", so.....
(And the fact that I remember all THAT, plus LaToya's Bee Gees night performance indicates that we can be quite sad together, Tonichelle.... )

Actually, I think LaKisha seemed to be a bit more open than usual to listening than usual, which is to say that at least she did the "smile and nod" thing while doing her own thing anyway. Now if she could just actually TAKE THE ADVICE. Tho I have to wonder if she just has a really bad memory and MEANT to do some of this stuff, but just forgot as soon as she got out there.

I think last night pretty much solidified Melinda and Jordin as the final 2, tho, despite the fact that I thought (last night anyway) LaKisha was better than Melinda.

Perhaps his jaw does not open as wide as most people's, or his upper lip overhangs his top teeth, or his top teeth are way up too far in his mouth, or....?? Funny you should mention this, because I was thinking last night, as I have on other occasions, that he's got cool teeth (at least on the bottom) I just wish he'd re-bleach his hair. He looks like he's been shackled in a basement for the last 3 years with that pale skin and dark hair.

On that note, Ryan ended up spitting on Jordin while imitating some strange sound; do you suppose for a similar reason it's probably not a good idea to stand too close to Blake during rehearsals?? And Ryan MUST swear on national television to NEVER attempt beatboxing again.....

As far as dancing skills Elvis was the ultimate pop Idol, American Idol, and entertainer but his dancing was not great. Another Idol that dancing just palin out sucks...........Mick Jagger. Mike Love of the Beach Boys breaks into the monkey in one of their video clips that looks to be on the verge of a seizure.

Now back to singing, LOL. I really liked Blakes first song. I think the beat boxing was very cool. Jordin is my favorite. Melinda is boring to me. Even in her Tina Turner moments I find her boring. Lakisha needs to fire whoever is responsible for her wardrobe choices. This woman needs to were a bra.
