Hi everyone, the new season is already knocking on our doors. We're only three weeks away from adult test skates, and I have to make the two rankings I promised you in that time. Let's start with the costume rankings for the 2023-2024 season. We have 10 contenders and one out-of-competition contestant, so there's plenty of material, it's going to be a full-fledged top 10. And we're starting right now!

Out of competition #10 #9 #8 #7 #5/#6 🏅#4 🥉#3 🥈#2 🥇#1

Out of competition. The “many a little makes a mickle” costume.

Last year I joked that Andrei's costume for the program to “Three Days of Rain” looked like his luggage was lost and he skates in what he was wearing. It was a joke. I vow not to make any more jokes about it, because this year Andrei and Daniil Samsonov actually lost their luggage when they were flying from Moscow to Vladivostok. In fact, they missed the plane and their luggage stayed in Moscow and they had to sweat to get it back a few days later. Thus, they approached the Vladivostok show in the best condition possible. No costume. No skates. What a beautiful day.

After predictable reprimand from Eteri Tutberidze, guys used their imagination and started thinking about what they would do in such a situation. They didn't want to sit behind the board and just watch other skaters skate. Imagination and mutual help came to the rescue. Andrei borrowed skates from Makar Ignatov (his roomie), and Daniel, who has a small feet, asked Arseniy Fedotov for skates. Thus, they went to train on other people's skates and were able to skate on them satisfactorily. But the problems with the equipment did not end there. Andrei had to buy himself socks, because his skates were chafing him, and Daniil had to buy a white T-shirt. Finally, Andrei arrived in town in loose athletic pants, and he needed jeans for this program. So he borrows jeans from Daniil.

Thus, in this video, Andrei takes to the ice in a costume consisting of:

Makar Ignatov's skates;

Daniel Samsonov's jeans;

New socks

and an oversized T-shirt that he either bought or borrowed from someone.

It must be admitted that Andrei coped with the difficulties. But still, Andrei, be careful and check your luggage.

We continue our Andrei Mozalev's costumes top . This evening I have the honor of presenting to you the worst costume of the season, and it's...

Evil wizard outfit with plastic crown on elastic band for children's party
For “Black Magician” show number, performed on the Evgeny Plushenko's show on open ice in November 2023.

Music: Pyotr Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake.

Image: evil wizard, no more, no less.

Let's be honest. All these costumes for shows based on children's fairy tales are very strange, especially those that are rented to sportsmen. Yes, you can spend your own money and make yourself a special costume, but it's expensive and probably the organizers won't be very happy because they have their own concept of looks and outfits. Usually sportsmen wear what they are asked to wear. Sometimes it looks good, sometimes it doesn't. This suit looks good overall, but it doesn't suit Andrei at all, making him look bulkier than he actually is. Plus it doesn't turn him into an evil wizard at all. And that crown with the elastic band tucked under his chin... let's add a magic robe made out of a duvet cover and give him a magic wand made out of a toilet brush and tinsel.

I'm probably being too angry, but really, if Andrei had a different costume, maybe his performance on the ice would have looked a lot better.

Next in our ranking is a costume for the show that at least was beautiful and really went with Andrei's look. Which one? Come back tomorrow and see it!

Hi everyone, back to talking about Andrei Mozalev's costumes, and today we have another not-so-successful costume for the show....

The overweight blue prince
For “The Godfather Drosselmeyer” show number, performed at Evgeny Plushenko's show on open ice in December 2023-January 2024.
Music: Pyotr Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker
Image: a good wizard - godfather. Maybe. I don`t know.

I've already talked about what the problem with this program is. Andrei is too young to play the stated character. Yes, I know he's been portraying older characters for the last 5 years, but in this case we're talking about physical middle age, not an inner midlife crisis. And the suit doesn't help remedy the situation at all.

It's a rental suit again. Usually it is worn by Evgeny Plushenko himself, and this figure skater looks very organic in this costume and in this role. And Andrei doesn't. He looks more like a prince or something like that. Perhaps the magical nephew of Drosselmeyer.

The costume absolutely fails to fulfill its function, I can't identify Andrei as Drosselmeyer's godfather (which is basically a difficult task, since this is a character without much characterization). Andrei looks musical, well-danced and fat, especially when he wears thermal underwear under his costume. However, I can note that the color of the suit is very nice and it suits Andrei's face. That's why he was on the position higher.

But Andrei had better suits for the show, right?
Yes, of course. We'll get to them later. Come back tomorrow and you'll find out who came in eighth place.

Welcome back to Andrei Mozalev's ranking of costumes for the programs of the season 2023-2024! Traditionally, the lowest positions in the rating are occupied by costumes for show programs. They are rarely successful, as a rule, they are prepared hastily, do not think about them, do not think about the concept and idea. Sometimes there is a concept and idea, but because of the lack of time it is not possible to see that in general it looks strange on the ice. All this can be said with full confidence about our next contestant, who took 8th place.

...But this is a costume for the competition program.

#8 Something strange with the vest
For free skate “Angel Who Wants to Be Human.”
Music: My Body is a Cage by Peter Gabriel; The Room by Marcel Dettman and Ben Klock.
Image: an angel being reborn as a human being.
Let me be clear: I don't hate this costume. In fact, I think it's original and noteworthy. The fashion designer says that he wanted to create something new, to bring the features of casual fashion and sports fashion to the ice suit. In general, we can say that he succeeded in this task, and the suit really looks fresh and original.

But these pluses do not balance the minuses enough to make this suit in the top 5. Too short vest, a large percentage of beige fabric sticking out from under the vest - and Andrey looks too dense and even gets a remark about his excess weight from Tarasova. The suit simply did not adorn the athlete, it showed the flaws of his figure.

They are good that they reacted to the criticism and tried to correct the situation: for the next competition the beige one was repainted into dark orange, and the fabric on the stomach was dyed in dark color to avoid the effect of a big light stripe in the middle of the stomach. But even as it is, the costume looks kind of weird.

It's not catastrophically awful enough to draw attention to itself. It's not eccentric enough to look like a creative manifesto. It's just baffling and weird.
Since no one has been able to solve the mystery of this costume, it ranks eighth in my rankings. Not the worst, but far from the most successful either.

What's up with show costumes? There's plenty more. Give me some time and come back tomorrow to find out who's ranked number seven.

Production of the free program of Andrei Mozalev for the season 2024-2025 to the music of -
Ennio Morricone - “the Mission” soundtrack

The closer we get to the top three, the more wearable costumes.
Some of them are even quite nice. Like this one.

Casual, or basic clothes for ice show
For show number “Gde ty?” (“Where are you?”), performed on the Tutberidze show.
Music: Tri dnya dozhdya (Three days of rain) - “Gde ty?” ("Where are you?")
Image: ordinary guy

Last year he was last on the list. This year, he's moved up to seven place, beating out three other contenders. It's not that he's better or worse, it's just that the suits above are better and the suits below are weird or lame.

Have I been able to love this suit over the course of this year? Yes and no.
But I've found a lot of virtues in it that I hadn't thought of before. For example, if parts or the whole costume goes missing, it's easy to replace it with another one identical. Okay, I swore I wouldn't bring up the subject of missing luggage or anything like that. No more suitcases stuck at the airport ever again.

Over the course of this year, my perspective has changed a bit. I was able to see on the show that the suit works, that it's appropriate enough for the situation, comfortable and looks good. The audience (I'm talking mostly about young ladies) are loving the program. The “regular guy” image is quite convincing. Yes, there's a difference between a “regular guy suit” and a casual outfit that you just randomly out of a suitcase, there's a difference.
But who cares but the costumers?
The audience is happy. Andrei's happy. So the costume is not bad and fulfills all its functions.

Minimalism beats ingenuity in most cases. I realized this on the example of many other suits, which we will talk about later. I realize it by looking at this suit. It's not beautiful, it's not ingenious, it's not inventive, it's a bit boring, but it does its job well - and it's a fair golden
middle of the pack and seventh place.

Seriously though, Andrei, change this program. And the costume.
You can replace the black t-shirt with a white one, but we want variety. It won't be funny the third year.

A simple costume or an elaborate costume, which is better? I think I'm gonna go with the elaborate costumes. That's why they're ranked higher in my rankings, #5 и #6. Seeing you tomorrow to know where the imagination takes fashion designers.

It's evening - and we're discussing Andrei Mozalev's costumes again.
If you remember, yesterday I talked about flashy suits and designers with imagination. If I tell you that I'm ranking the twin suits today, there's no more intrigue, right?
Two volumes of the book of the life of an angel and a man, or Those Book Suits.
For SP & FS since September through November 2023.

Costume for the SP

Costume for the FS

Let's start with a confession. I have never hated these costumes, moreover, I have always liked them.
I sincerely thank Andrei for the opportunity to combine two favorite pastimes: watching figure skaters and reading passages of texts in ancient languages. I know I'm not alone in my passions, @elektra blue, validate my words! I gave a photo of Andrei in costume to my colleague, a specialist in Old Slavonic, and together we deciphered all the inscriptions we could examine. Did you notice that on Andrei's chest, by the way, the word “loving” is written in the participle form, and for some reason it is feminine. Does he have a feminine soul?

I like these costumes. They have their own humble charm of a museum object or a vintage book, you can feel some history behind them.

Now we have to talk about the bad. These costumes didn't do their job. They didn't satisfy the judges, they didn't appeal to the fans, and they didn't particularly help create a certain look on the ice. But that's not even the worst thing about them. They were banally non-functional, weighing Andrei down and getting in the way of jumping.

Almost all the suits that were rated lower than these two were at least just aesthetically unpleasant or unimpressive, but they were at least comfortable from a functional point of view. And these were simply not suitable for the chosen sport.

The story of the suit with the vest repeats itself. They're not all good, but they're also not bad enough to become a fashion nightmare and be remembered for it. They're not boring enough to be instantly forgettable. They are something in between, they don't like them, but they attract attention and somehow they are hard to forget. The designer wanted to create something amazing and mesmerizing, and it turned out to be something strange. It happens a lot.

Well, both books have been read and closed. I can't separate them, but I like the second suit, with the blue lapel, better. It is a very beautiful blue color, the “cover” of the book is aptly and beautifully decorated, and this color suits Andrei. So let the suit for FS be the 5th, and the suit for SP the 6th.

We are approaching the end! Who is one step away from the prize three? Will I award the lucky winner with a tin medal or not? See you tomorrow!

Andrei's new interview: about Tutberidze's team, moving to Moscow, new programs, daily routine, hobbies and fans

First of all I discussed the transition with my family and consulted with everyone close to me. My friends were shocked, just like everyone else. No one discouraged me, everyone was in favor of the transition and supported this choice. During the period of the move there were no thoughts of bringing everything back. Time will tell whether this decision is good or bad. It will definitely not be worse in any case.
I remember the first training session with Eteri Georgievna, it was very exciting - I skated like in a fog. For the first two weeks I didn't realize that I was in Moscow, that I was skating with Eteri Georgievna, only later I realized it. Of course, she helped me adapt, she felt that I was worried. She told me to be calm and that I would be accepted as I am.
We're looking for a new look, so Eteri Georgievna told me to grow my hair out. That way there would be more options for coming up with something new. Since moving to Moscow, I've only cut my hair once, and I've been growing it out ever since. I don't think my hair will stay the same length, but it will depend on the image that Eteri Georgievna comes up with. She gives me a lot of advice, including on style.
Renting an apartment in Moscow turned out to be more difficult than getting into the Russian national team (laughs). But everything went well.

So, we are left with four images, four costumes, each of which is worthy of a pedestal. Let's take a closer look at them and look at all the details! And our fashion show opens with a costume that almost ended up on the podium and received my honorary tin medal. An outfit that really wanted to be repainted in a different color.

🏅
Black Outfit For The Black Man

For The Black Man show program, performed once at the show tournament “Russian Challenge”.

Music: melodeclamation by Sergei Bezrukov, excerpts from Sergei Esenin's poem “Black Man”.

Image: demonic alter ego of a suffering man.

I love the imagination and creativity of designers, but as a rule, beautiful minimalism wins almost always. A simple black suit of shirt and jeans - what more do you need to set off an actor's performance? The costume was complemented by elegant black eyes, making the face look sleep-deprived and exhausted (it was Elizaveta Tuktamysheva's idea).

But this outfit also looks like it was pulled out of a suitcase by randomly matching the shirt to the pants, right? No, it doesn't. This suit is simple, but it's clearly been worked on. Would I want this suit to be replaced with a white or black and white transformer suit? Probably not. I unequivocally have no complaints with it, it does its job perfectly.

The only reason this suit is only fourth is because it had strong and very cool competitors. Which ones? See you tomorrow at the medal ceremony!

So, ladies and gentlemen, the medal ceremony continues, and I'm ready to present the bronze medal!

🥉
A romantic suit with a jacket
For the L'istante showcase, performed on The Ilya Averbukh Show.
Music: Peter Nalich - L'istante
Image: a young man in love with blazing eyes.

I'm still a big fan of elaborate suits with an idea and concept, but simplicity has once again put me on my back. A simple black jacket, black pants, white t-shirt or light beige sweater, ruddy cheeks, clear eyes, wide sincere smile and the image is complete. Nothing else is needed here. Yes, this suit probably looks like it's been pulled out of the closet too - but then that closet only holds what you really need. This suit really works and helps create the look and mood you want.

I give extra points to the costume for the fact that the individual parts still participate in the performance, for being considered props. That movement with which Andrei tucks up the hem of his jacket as he floats on the spread eagle - isn't that charming?

Yes, we've seen all these tricks from Averbukh a hundred times. But with Andrei it looks fresh and unusual. I love this program, this image and this costume.

There are only two of them left... Come back tomorrow and you'll find out who is one step away from victory!

What a great evening to give someone the silver medal!
No doubt about it, it's not gold, but a clear second place.
Although this character clearly likes gold better. And marzipan. And children's toys.

🥈
A perfectly detailed costume of a sinister and tragic mouse monarch.
For Evgeny Plushenko's Christmas show on the open ice.
Music: Pyotr Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker (part of the Mouse King).
Image: demonic creature, suffering evil.

I praised minimalism, but an elaborately decorated theatrical costume also has its advantages. First, when you put it on, you are putting on an image of yourself, and the clothes help you “get under the skin” of your character. Secondly, the audience easily identifies you with your character, you don't even need special acting. And third, if you want to play your role seriously, the costume becomes your assistant.
If you think about it, the costume is kind of ridiculous with those tails and the dangling tail. But with a professional it all becomes attributes, props. Andrei cleverly uses the parts of the costume dangling from behind, involving them in movement:

This is a children's matinee costume, but it is a very successful children's matinee costume that can be used in an adult performance as well. It's dark, gloomy, scary, and enticing enough to appeal to adults. At the same time, it looks as if it came off an illustration from a children's fairy tale, so it doesn't seem somehow too scary so as not to alienate children. Probably one of the few successful costumes for this show.

Extra bonus: as you can see, a good costume isn't ruined even by new accessories. The headband and black gloves are worn for frost protection, but they look like a logical extension of the costume and don't detract from it.

Better that than wearing a plastic crown on your head and tightening the elastic band on your chin.

Great costume, one of my favorites. So who took the grand prize and the gold medal?
Come back tomorrow and we'll congratulate the winner together!

Let's end the summer and our ranking beautifully. And the gold medal is awarded to the most beautiful costume...

🥇
A beautiful costume in the color of early dawn.

This costume was made by the same fashion designer who made the new FS costume - and this costume is a success. There are fresh solutions here: really casual fashion features transferred into sports fashion (cut, details of the suit, pay attention to the beautiful belt of the pants). Minimalism is combined with beautiful decoration (this is a very beautiful decoration on the back, symbolizing angel wings).

Finally, this is a very bold color choice, because rarely do men in singles skating sew themselves pink suits. Typically, those who skate comedy programs or romantic programs do. A great choice of shade, this color is reminiscent of an early dawn and suits Andrei very well. He looks young, fragile, serious and beautiful.

I could go on for a long time listing the merits of this costume, but let me just say it out loud: Yes, this was the best program and the best costume of the 2023-2024 season.

Our rankings, like the lowseason, are officially over. Congratulations on the start of fall! It won't be long before we see Andrei's new programs and costumes. Before the test skates start, I will try to make one more rating and thus summarize the cooperation between the Davydenko-Lunin tandem and Andrei Mozalev. I'll start in a few days, because I need a rest too. Bye!

Knowledge Day. The beginning of the school year. Andrei is nostalgic

Andrei is on the list of participants :) We are waiting for the premiere of new programs!

Big informal interview of Andrei Mozalev and Daniil Samsonov in the talk show “I have a story” with Anastasia Skoptsova. The guys tell stories from the locker room, about childhood outrages, pranks and evil jokes, about unruly teenagers, talk about friendship with girls and dates with dancers from “Russian Challenge”. Andrei also told the story of the origin of his close friendship with Alexander Galliamov.

Unfortunately, only Russian subtitles. You can translate them and get a rough idea of what they are saying. If possible, I'll try to get a version from Chinese bilibili with English subtitles.

Andrei's short program premiere for the new season.
Music: The Cinematic Orchestra (feat. Patrick Watson)-To Build a Home
