Andrew Torgashev

His SP TES at Nats was "only" 41.17, though, with a beautiful 3A and a non-UR quad fall. Seems like the SP min might be harder to get than the LP min. At least, that's what I'm telling myself. (In the SP at Easterns his TES was 29.98, which is below the cut-off; thankfully today was better than that).

I have a :palmf: confession. At first I thought getting the TES would be SUPER EASY for Andrew. But it's because I was thinking of the Total Segment Score. I thought, "Oh, of course he can get it. He got 78 and 67 already this year." But I have adjusted my thinking and I now realize that, yes, 34/64 TES IS hard to get if you don't land your jumps. Honestly, he was so dangerously close to not getting it today. Let's hope tomorrow is less of a close call. This is SO NERVE-WRACKING!!! :eek2: And yet I am also enjoying it. ;) My emotions are all over the place.

ANDREW IS GOING TO WORLDS!!!!! :yahoo: :cheer2: :hap10:  Much better outing today, with much more room to spare on the TES. He was 4th in the FS and moved up to 5th overall.

He doubled the 4T and got edge calls on both Lutzs but had no falls. Big improvement from the SP.
TES: 73.10 PCS: 72.43 FS: 145.53. Comp: 215.86 Protocol: https://knsbfigureskatingresults.nl...------FNL-000100--_JudgesDetailsperSkater.pdf (page 2)

It's funny, because 5th is about where I hoped he might end up, but I wasn't picturing a climb there from 10th. Incidentally, he also got 164 WS Points. At non-Challenger events, only the top 5 get WS points, which I didn't think was possible after his SP, but it happened. If he finishes top 24 at Worlds, he'll get some more WS points. (At Challengers and GPs, the top 8 get points, and at Euros/4CC/Worlds/Olys, the top 24 get points).

So exciting that all Andrew wanted to do was make top 10, and now he is going to Worlds.

I want him to wrap himself in bubble wrap so he does not injure himself before then!

Also, isn't that Papa Artem with him again in the KnC at the Challenge Cup? I'm glad he is able to share this moment with his first coach ;)

"At the beginning of the season my goal was simply to get through the season injury free and make the top 10 at Nationals!”

Well, Andrew, you are injury-free (please stay that way!) and you did way better than top 10 at Nationals. :) Goals met and exceeded!!!

While we are waiting for Worlds, let's relive Nationals yet again, shall we?

I was highly motivated so I figured out how to download the VK streams and then extract Andrew's programs from them. Since I don't know that much about video editing, it was time-consuming to learn, with some trial and error, but it was TOTALLY worth all the time and effort (and I learned something new). So, this means you don't need to remember the timestamps and fast forward, or worry about the streams being deleted! There is a Download button, which makes for easy offline viewing. :hap10:

In addition to the programs, in this process I stumbled across Andrew's SP warmup. Most warmup stuff is boring but, trust me, this is not. The streams showed the skaters warming up in their skate order, meaning Andrew was shown at the very beginning of the SP warmup. He's doing beautiful footwork with beautiful posture. Eventually he does an axel and a toeloop. The music is random but Andrew's basic skating still shines through. The ultimate sign of great skating is if you can appreciate the skating BY ITSELF, independent of any music. I thought it was beautiful enough to extract. (In the LP warmup, Andrew is shown second and we just see him doing jumps and skating forward, which was far too boring to extract.)

FYI, Shazam tells me the song playing during the SP warmup is "#thatPOWER" by will.i.am and Justin Bieber. The lyrics at the beginning are perfect for Andrew's skating comeback: "And oh, I'm alive, I'm alive, I'm alive / And oh, I can fly, I can fly, I can fly / And oh, I'm alive, I'm alive, I'm alive / And I'm loving every second / Minute, hour, bigger, better, stronger, power / I got that power / I got that power / I got that power, power power power."

I cannot wait to sit down and rewatch these, thank you @skatingfan4ever !
You are so very welcome! I knew you'd be thrilled! Frankly, I rewatched them right after I posted them (as good an excuse as any, right?) and it was just as thrilling as the first time. In fact, the LP was even more so because there's no Tara and Johnny to distract from the build of the crowd noise and the music. Oh my heavens, what an experience those programs were/are.

On another subject, I finally watched Andrew's programs from 2015 Junior Worlds a couple days ago. He had it even back then at age 13. He was committed to his choreography and gave viewers time to appreciate the beauty of his movements. He didn't rush, even back then. It's hard to believe that was eight years ago and, at long last, he's headed to his first Senior Worlds. Dare we hope that it won't be his only trip?! 🤞 With the US Men being how they are, you never know what will happen, and I am here for all the beautiful chaos. :) Andrew's odds may go up if Jason doesn't continue all the way to 2026. I don't know.

Oh. My. Goodness. I remember that his FS was really good but not as impressive as this. What really got me this time was his extension, beautiful lines, and especially the way I could almost feel him thinking through each move. :points:Thanks so much!

Poor guy, he looked SO disappointed after his SP, which was excellent in spite of the fall at the beginning. He deserves a ton of credit for picking himself right up and not losing focus.

Speaking of thinking through each move and making it important, @skatedreamer, I think you and all Andrew fans will love this. I found Andrew's full program from 2019 PFT on YouTube. I cannot even DESCRIBE how INCREDIBLE this is!!!:love::love::love::love: It's Bloodstream, but even BETTER than the SP version!!!

The PFT performance has several big differences from the SP, including (1) using the whole song; (2) easier jumps; and (3) no strict requirements to fit into a timeframe. Which means, Andrew had TOTAL FREEDOM OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION. And boy, did he use EVERY SINGLE NOTE AND NUANCE IN THAT MUSIC!!! This is one of the most AMAZING skating performances I have EVER seen!!! I think you'll understand why I'm using so many capital letters after you watch the program (again or for the first time).

His Bloodstream SP has plenty of transitions, but I watched this and realized how many he changed or took out because of everything he had to do in the SP, and its time limit. For instance, here he does a knee slide before the 3T+2T and running threes (I think that's what to call it?) into the 2A and a twizzle out. I also love 1:47-1:53 (flying sit spin entrance but quickly goes into two butterfly-like moves (please correct me if there's a better name for them).

As incredible as the Bloodstream SP is and always will be, in comparison some musical nuances are missed when he's setting up a jump or doing another spin revolution or position variation for levels. In this version, free of competition restraints, he hits ALL of the musical nuances.

This fancam captures every head movement, arm accent, hand position, transition, and extension. I've watched it several times and each time I find myself noticing different aspects (head, hands, arms, jumps, spins, footwork, transitions, etc). THIS is what skating with your whole body looks like. I love at 2:34 how his movement slows down with the music. There's a big difference between pausing because something is difficult and pausing for artistic purposes, and Andrew excels at the latter. When the tempo increases again, he immediately accelerates to match it. I loved hearing the crowd gasp at the "Flying Torg" (2:59) which, not only did he land very smoothly, but he accentuated it by bringing his arm quickly across his body as if to say, "Did you see that?" But in true Andrew fashion, he doesn't stop there and keeps going with amazing choreography.

There is so much great stuff in here that there wasn't time or space for in the SP. This specific performance, with its choreography and pristine delivery, is BEYOND AMAZING!!! :cheer2: :points: I already loved Andrew's interpretation of Bloodstream in the SP and 2023 Ex (which uses the SP music cut), but this takes my love to another level. All that's left to say is WOW!!!!! :jaw:

I sure did see it; I gasped right along with the audience! Wonder if he could re-tool the program to make it competitive under IJS judging, although more jumps might spoil it…?

He did use it as his short program during the 2019/2020 season and it was VERY competitive. 3rd after the SP at both 2020 Senior Nationals and 2020 Junior Worlds. But to become a SP, it had to be cut down a little for time, with not quite so many flourishes, and more spin revolutions/variations to get levels. Plus the time taken to set up harder jumps.

At 2020 Senior Nationals he did a 4T, 3A, and 3F+3T, got Level 4 on two spins and his StSeq, and Level 3 on the other spin. He scored 97.87.

At Junior Worlds he did a 3A, 3F+3T, and 3Lo. Again he got Level 3s and 4s on spins and steps. For some reason he got Level 4 on steps at Nationals but Level 3 on steps at Junior Worlds. His score at Junior Worlds was 81.50. He kept that signature move in the Step Sequence, with a different landing.

I recommend watching the Junior Worlds video first, so you know how the program is with the music on, and then watching the 2020 Nationals program with the sound off. (The original video either was never available or got removed for copyright, so in this "reaction video" you can watch the program in a small square while this guy talks over it. The volume is low to begin with, and the guy is talking over it and there's background noise). Andrew's gorgeous 4T is worth seeing though, and his movement quality shines through even on a tiny screen with the sound off.

I watched the SP version long before the PFT version, and I love both, but I think PFT is slightly more artistically satisfying. Harder jumps don't ruin it; they just change it a little.
