Andrew Torgashev

Andrew has been selected for the Worlds Team! Andrew has been selected for the Worlds Team!:cheer:

If you had told me, in my wildest dreams, that Andrew would return after two plus years of injury and win bronze at Nats....

well not in my wildest dreams. What wonderful skates, and how well deserved!

I just read through all 9 pages of this thread and watched the videos that are still available. Now I am even more impressed by his Nationals performances. Having gone back and watched his JGP and other skates and how rough the jumps often were, his jumps looked AMAZING at Nationals and you would never have known he struggled with them so much. Even the quad fall had a nice air position.

Like Patrick Chan and Jason Brown, I found that I didn't care about what jumps Andrew landed. The skating quality and the performance level was always there even when he struggled. And then when he skates a LP like Nationals, it is SO EPIC.

I found his 2023 Nationals Ex, but sadly not his SP or LP. (And yet Ilia and Jason's LPs are both available and easy to share. Why doesn't NBC at least put all the medalists' LPs up, regardless of name recognition?! :bang: But no one asked me. And Andrew's SP wasn't even broadcast on TV but still fell victim to a copyright claim. I was very behind and didn't get to watch it on Peacock, but thankfully the VK link of the Men's SP was still working so I got to watch his SP, along with the NBC broadcast of his LP. *rant over*)

I LOVED his EX, it's so gorgeous, and I just figured out that it's a version of his Bloodstream SP from 2019/2020. I believe 2020 Nationals was the first time I really noticed Andrew, and rewatching it I remember why he stood out to me.

I also (sort of) found his 2020 Nationals SP. It's in an old "reaction video." I don't know who this is, but he said that "Andrew is the future of figure skating. He is Jason Brown with quads.":love::love: You can watch the program in a small square on the left and hear very nice compliments of Andrew as it goes along. The only strange thing is you hear the person's phone ringing during the step sequence.

I will eagerly be following this Fan Fest for any new info, interviews, etc, because Andrew is a fascinating, lovely skater and person! I'm surprised there's not more pages in this thread, but I'm glad to be here now. I will be cheering for Andrew to do well at Challenge Cup. Priority number one is to get the minimums and skate as well as he can. Assuming he gets the minimums, do you think he'll upgrade at all for Worlds? I would hate for Andrew not to make the LP and/or finish somewhere in the teens/twenties. Having said that, I loved the cleanliness of his Nationals LP, so he should definitely do what he's comfortable with, especially since he hasn't competed lately.

Don’t ever count your own peeps out. Don’t let anyone else count them out. You count them IN❤️🎉🎊

whole post

Welcome @skatingfan4ever and thank you for sharing your thoughts on Andrew! :hap10: You are so right about his improvement, I watched his qualifying skates this year live on Peacock and the Nats performances were a marked improvement on those, let alone years ago.

Thank you also for sharing the "reaction video". Andrew's 2020 SP was amazing, and despaired of ever seeing it again. If in your journey you see anything, please come back and post.

Onto Challenge Cup!:dance3:

I call that guy the irritating screaming guy because he plays the videos very softly and screeches over them and so NBCs bots can’t find his videos. So you can often find stuff on his channel you can’t find elsewhere.

Thanks for the warm welcome to the thread! :ghug:

I have no clue how long these will be available. For the moment, you can relive Nationals Andrew by watching these VK streams. Do it, while you still can. Best part is, no commentary!

Short Program @ 25:05
Long Program @ 2:59:35
Medals @ 3:48:00
(camera focuses a lot on Ilia and Jason, Andrew not very much )

Last post for today, I promise. Moulin Rouge will forever be linked with Tessa and Scott, Ashley Wagner, and now Andrew in my mind. I also liked Shen and Zhao's 2004 Ex to "Come What May." I hadn't seen Andrew's Roxanne until today, but wow oh wow, the commitment, the passion!!! Unforgettable! Lots of people have Moulin Rogue music on while skating, but few can own it and make it memorable. Andrew is one of them!!! 💯

Bloodstream is also incredible! I listened to the song by itself and I could see Andrew's program in my mind while listening. That's how you know it's a memorable program!

I love his current programs too, and that he is so committed to skating skills and to the entire performance. It truly shows and makes him a hard skater to forget, for me anyway!

Was Misha Ge with Andrew in the K&C at Nationals? If so, he looks really different from his competition days.

Does Andrew speak fluent Russian, or is it more like he only knows the skating corrections in Russian?

You can never post too much Andrew, @skatingfan4ever, so please continue!

To answer your questions, yes that was Misha Ge. He does look different from his skating days, I like the facial hair and the more sophisticated style, but not everyone does.

Andrew does speak conversational Russian, although I'm not certain it's fluent. When he was one of the three junior men of Russian descent assigned to junior worlds (Andrew, Ilia and Maxim), Russian TV did a fluff piece on them. They conversed, it seemed easily, in Russian. Sadly, I do not know one word of Russian. However, I was told by my sources, and I think it was mentioned in the "public" forum, that none of them are truly fluent, they all have accents and stumbled on some words. I do remember that Maxim was considered the best Russian speaker of the three.

Yup that's Misha.

And yup, there is a video from a few years back of Andrew, Maxim Naumov and Ilia Malinin being interviewed in Russian (link and translation here):
According to Lariko Andrew's proficiency is around middle of the three. All of them speak their parents' language better than Nathan in Mandarin :p

:thank: to you both! How fascinating that Andrew was even in a Russian fluff piece and was interviewed in Russian. And Ilia, Andrew, and Maxim just finished 1, 3, 4 at Senior Nationals. Who would have thought?!

MISHA!!! I love Misha's skating, and I hope this collaboration continues!!! Lovely work on both programs this season, you two!!! I think Misha and Andrew are a skater-choreographer match made in heaven. They both skate with passion and intention and want to make each moment on the ice special.

:ot: I vividly remember when, after Misha skated his perfect FS at 2018 Worlds, which was his last competition, he knelt and actually bowed to the ice first, as if to say "thank you" to the ice itself for helping him give that performance. How fitting for someone who so gently yet powerfully caresses the ice with his blades to do that. Then in the K&C before the scores, he bowed to his father/coach. I was so moved that I downloaded the video to my computer. I rewatched it today and found it so very soothing. Perhaps you will as well. Relax and enjoy! (Side note: I can't see Andrew ever skating to "Meditation" but for Misha it worked so beautifully!)

I like to think of Fan Fests as a "one-stop shop" for any given skater. So, I'm bringing over Andrew's section of the GS article about the 2023 Nationals FS to the Fan Fest, so it's easy to look back on when we want to.

In his return to the national championships, Torgashev impressed with his powerful free skate to "Carmina Burana." Opening with a lithe quadruple toe, the 21-year-old followed up with eight triples, including a triple flip-triple toe combination in the second half of the program. Two level-four spins also helped to catapult him up the rankings to snag the bronze medal. He received 177.78 points for the effort, winning the free skate and earning a total of 256.56 points overall.

"It's so crazy," Torgashev reflected. "It's a little unbelievable. It's weird, because I do this every day. It's gotten better over the last eight weeks. You know, we've been just training so hard. I really tried to dedicate all of myself to coming into the race, doing my best and improving one percent each day. In fact, even things could have been better but, to do it on this stage, like after so much time, it's like my fifth nationals. Just to be able to skate like that is unbelievable. I'm still like in awe."

It thrills me to read that he "does this every day" and "it's gotten better over the last eight weeks." I'm glad Andrew himself is taking the time to notice his improvements. It bodes well for future outings, if he keeps improving one percent each day. His quote is analytical on one hand but so amazed on the other. It's like, "I do this every day, but wow, I actually skated like this WHILE AT NATIONALS!" Andrew said he's still in awe. Well, I am too, Andrew, I am too! :hap10:

His reaction in the K&C warmed my heart. I'm so happy for him to be back. And next year he gets a bye to Nationals and doesn't need to do NQS!:yahoo: Maybe we'll finally get to see him on the Senior GP too.

I'm still on a high from Nationals, so really this post is just me giving myself a reason to keep celebrating it. That's what Fan Fests are for, right? ;) :)

Andrew posted this in October on Instagram, but I just found it today! No music, just the lovely, sweet sound of Andrew's blades!!!:love::love: I appreciate so very much that when Andrew skates, his spins, footwork, and transitions don't look laborious or painful or just there to get points! He does earn points, of course, but he is able to make the choreography flow naturally. It doesn't look like he's doing it to get levels, but instead like he's doing it because it makes sense with the music and looks nice. What a great, and more rare, skill in figure skating today! He has the speed, skating skills, work ethic, and inner desire to make everything look seamless.

After Nationals, he captioned a celebratory photo with, "Thank you for a weekend San Jose ❤️ Now back to work." I, for one, can't wait to see the results of that work!!!

As is clear if you've been keeping track of this thread lately, I've gone on an Andrew deep dive since Nationals. Today I listened to his interview on the Ice Tea Podcast from 2020. I LOVED listening to Andrew talk for several minutes about choreography and how he lets the music dictate where the movement goes. What a novel concept. ;) I say this somewhat jokingly, but it seems true too. Anyway, most of the interview was about choreography. How very refreshing!

And, I found an Easter egg! Andrew was asked about a bucket list item in skating, and he said his dream choreographer to work with is...drumroll...MISHA GE! Check that one off the list, Andrew, because it has happened!!!

I also love how he answered the question about goals for competitions: "Putting that choreography and those jumps on blast and getting everything done and making those programs how they're supposed to look. That's my goal."

Lastly, did anyone ever find video of the programs he announced at the end of the interview? (Flamenco SP & Imagine Dragons LP)? Did he get to skate them anywhere, between injuries? I LOVE his current programs, but I also wonder why he got new ones for this season rather than doing those? But then, given the chance to work with Misha Ge, OF COURSE Andrew would want to make new programs. So, I can understand it. He loves choreography so much, he doesn't need to repeat programs.
