Andrew Torgashev

I just finished all 12 skaters of the Men's SP. I never thought I'd say this sentence, but my 2 favorite programs were Andrew's and Ilia's. And I love Andrew's costume!

The score obviously doesn't reflect how amazing Andrew's actual program is. Andrew's was the only program I rewound to watch bits of choreography.:love::love: I like this SP even more than last year's. His commitment to using his whole body is second to none in this field. (Deniss usually does great with that too, but this program of his really didn't do anything for me, surprisingly; that version of Hallelujah is way too monotone for my taste). Andrew's step sequence encompassed everything I love about Andrew: fast, sharp, unexpected variations, matching the music, etc. The other thing I rewound for was that GORGEOUS AND GLORIOUS 3A!!! :hap10: I love how he stepped right up into it, no hesitation! Very nicely placed in the program. Even the glide backward at the very beginning of the program grabbed my attention. Andrew moves on the ice so naturally and with the music, instead of, "My choreographer told me to do this here."

The jumps were cleaner at Lombardia, but the camera angles/video quality and the costume were better at SA. Any idea why he went back to the 4T here? I thought the 4S looked great at Lombardia. I was hopeful that maybe he had switched because the 4S could be more stable than the 4T (which he landed cleanly only once last season in competition). Maybe they're still experimenting? The Flip was so unfortunate because he couldn't do a combo. He did a nice 3F+3T in the warmup. This field had a lot of mistakes so he could have finished much higher with a combo and/or a clean solo jump. But a tripled 4T and a 3F+3T would have been a Zayak anyway. That's the benefit of doing a 4S as the solo jump - no possibility to Zayak.

At least he didn't finish last in the SP. I wonder how many skaters he could leapfrog over in the FS. I haven't looked at planned BV, but I think Andrew has a lower planned BV than others in the event. In other words, to move up substantially, he'll need to jump very well and hope for another splatfest. If Andreas has a good FS, he could leap over Andrew. It will be interesting to see who ends up where after the FS. I hope Andrew doesn't finish last at SA.

I'm excited to see what improvements he's made to his FS since Lombardia. Plus, the camera angles will be better! :)

I was completely engrossed in Andrew's SP, jumps notwithstanding. IT WAS INCREDIBLE!!! GO ANDREW!!! :cheer2: Please keep a positive mindset for the Free! Thank you for skating the way you skate. No one does it quite like you!

Andrew literally JUST finished skating his LP. I watched on Peacock, so hooray for no commentary. I am SO PROUD of our boy. Tripled the 4T but landed on one foot. All other jumps clean, including a 3A+2A and a solo 3A. Solo 3A may have been UR? He looked so disappointed with the 4T but as a fan, I will totally take this program. Besides the 4T he jumped extremely well. He went into 1st with 219. I don't know if it's enough to move up, but he did not finish last! :hap10: I still like the SP more than the LP. He does have a new costume of a royal blue shirt and black pants. It shows up better than the white one. Very nice camera angles to capture the glory of Andrew's skating.

I'm missing some men live while typing this, but I wanted to give my gut reaction of Andrew's LP.

THREE CHEERS FOR ANDREW!!! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: Nice comeback from yesterday.

Thank you for your summary, @skatingfan4ever , encapsulating the magic that is Andrew so well.

I would much rather see pops or URs than falls, and once again, choreo and step sequences of the highest quality.

I consider this a redemption skate. :hap10:

I'm so proud of Andrew's FS from tonight! He seemed really determined to get this one right, though still intimidated to have to do it at all. But, that's called bravery - the very definition of it. Facing your fears, despite them raging inside of you. He seemed to have a different mindset throughout and didn't seem to want to place so much emphasis on his jumps as though they were the end-all-and-be-all of figure skating. They certainly are not, and he can skate like the best of them. When he does execute a proper jump, it is sweeeet, but his skating, choreo, and interpretation are freaking out-of-this-world. I love how different his programs are from everyone else's. No run-of-the-mill for him this season. They are both fantastic! Congrats to him for coming back strong in the free and even PBing himself! That is his WIN for this competition.

So, Andrew ended up 7th! :dance3: I haven't watched the other men's LPs yet. I only looked at the standings. Andrew won the battle among the Americans not named Ilia. ;) It just shows what a well-jumped program with good choreography can do for you, even a quadless one. He also picked up some WS Points. I honestly was not expecting him to move up that much.

Might he be invited to the gala? Normally it's Top 5, isn't it? But since he's from the US, could USFS invite him? I'm not sure exactly how it works.

I do not know how gala invites work, but fingers crossed. 🤞 I don't know how many skaters are invited, the top three certainly, but after that?

I was not expecting Andrew to move up that much either, although not at the expense of other skaters. I hope that the free skate restores his confidence so that we can see a good short and a good free together in the future!

I hope he does get invited to the Gala, since it's SKAM and USFS clearly adores him. I think the crowd does, too. Would love to see him do his One-foot Hitch-kick again in his EX, since he seems to only do it there anymore.

Andrew's FS on YouTube::hap10:

Love how he was able to bail on his 4T and turn it into a 3T because he seemed to sense he wasn't going to be able to land it or fully rotate it. It was better than just falling. Not sure why he went for a 4T and not his 4S, which has seemed to be better for him this season. The 4T seems cursed for him.

Andrew was in the gala. He did Blooldstream, which frankly never gets old. He wore his SP costume. He two-footed a 3T attempt and then, I don't know why, tried a 3A which he fell on. 🤔 I'm glad he didn't injure himself like Nathan Chen. :drama:

He put in the hitchkick and the Flying Torg, along with a hydroblade and a knee slide. Everything was classic Andrew. Like I said, Andrew skating to Bloodstream never gets old.

Followed by Kurakova, who went all in on campy. I enjoyed both, but what a stunning contrast.

Andrew was one of only two skaters that I left the football game to watch live, and that is a HUGE compliment from me :). (US Nats FS was a playoff game. I watched Andrew and one other skater live there too. A different "other skater ;) )

I love the hitch kick and the Flying Torg and I hope he puts them in future programs. It's a gala, he can leave out the 3A. :)

I'm not sure what the Flying Torg is. Can I ask you to elaborate?

Of course, it is just a nickname, but I like it.:)

It is basically a butterfly kick. The one that he did in the Bloodstream program seemed to have an extra little twist (Andrew being Andrew) but I am not technical enough to describe it.

Does this help?

Found this old Andrew interview, apologize if it has been reposted recently (you have been doing yeoman's work, @skatingfan4ever ) but love this quote about Bloodstream:

The story behind this program is pushing against what I’m “suppose” to do and doing what I want to do. I feel like lots of times in figure skating we are centered around judgment and critiques, but this year I wanted to show that I don’t care about the “norm”.

Andrew was wonderful to watch - just wish he could get some consistency. I thought his choreography was fresh and well executed. I keep hoping for him to cross that bridge....but there is more skating to come.

Here are 3 videos of it with timestamps. The YouTube ones will start at the exact time; the non-YouTube one I wrote in the post).

2023 Skate America Gala (Timestamp: 2:35; possibly 1:47 too, or is that something else?)
