The mental game has to be one of the hardest aspects of competitive skating, especially in singles when you’re all alone on the ice. It may be harder to “let loose” for someone who is quiet and introverted as Andrew appears to be. I wonder if he has thought about using a sports psychologist, which seems to have helped Nathan among other skaters.
Hi teddycat! I’ve posted so infrequently I can’t even remember how to post part of a quote

. Anyway, I’m new to the Torg fandom but a fs fan so old I vaguely remember watching Janet Lynn, way way back.

Anyway, when I was watching a bunch of YTs as I worked, one came up in autoplay of a press conference with Jason, Ilia, and Andrew. I don’t even know what it was from. (Maybe just Witchita!) But it seemed to have been misdated as 2023 season when it is 2024 season (maybe someone knows what this is?). The press (Christine, Phil) were really hammering Ilia about his sloppy program and Jason was rushing to his defense for attacking him, speaking about the years-long work with a sports psychologist he (Jason) had done and how she still had to convince him that he was mentally prepared and to believe in himself. It was very funny and disarming.
I don’t normally watch press conferences in figure skating, so I apologize for lack of detail. Some skaters get in their head for all kinds of reasons and sports psychologists are widely used. You just don’t want a certain rep as someone who can’t deal with the pressure. Amber Glenn famously has been very open about her struggles with confidence and how her work with sp has benefitted her.
But yes, I think he should and probably does. It’s just putting it all together. But SO many factors can lead to a poor skate. People are mentioning Raf being there instead of just Brandon was intimidating. That’s why athletes have so many routines and superstitions, like wearing the same socks, etc. I was worried I was distracting skaters once when I rushed to my seat during warmups at womens long! (Bathroom lines were insane!)
I was listening to a podcast today that said something about Andrew saying he was feeling great during warmup and then as he relaced his boots to go out for his long, he realized he was no longer in the zone but kind of out of it.
It’s unfortunate, but it occurs to me this is one of the reasons I think this is the best sport on Earth. High stakes, tiny, global field of competitors, and honestly low reward except love of the sport. (Thankfully the window of opportunity has widened for women as well as men, so you can follow a skater for over 10 years!) Plus, I love redemption stories and I think we’ll get one this season with Andrew.
