Any Sasha updates?

Meanwhile, the Plushenkacholics (2003 posts and counting) are laughing at the Carolinians, the Shashaphiles and the Kwaniacs equally.

But not all of us on the Plusheno thread are actually fans! We get on fine though because the people posting are reasonable and don't slag off other skaters to make their pro Plushenko points ;-)

It means at the moment Caroline is more popular at GS than a skater who retired 5 years ago. And a skater who retired 3 years ago.
I may be way off base here but I've noticed that several people have talked about Michelle retiring or retirement as well as Sasha. Did they???? Isn't the announcement supposed to come from them??? ....or can Golden Skate posters retire them??? I'm confused. I didn't know that either of them offically retired...I never read an offical announcement from either of them. If you have can you post it, please.

It is true that Michelle never formally retired as a competitive skater. She simply announced that she was going to graduate school, but said nothing about her skating career.

As always, Dee is being mature...when she knows that's not always appreciated...

With a B.A. and an M.A. in the works.

In addition to 5 World championships, 9 US Championships, and 2 Olympic medals.

:bow::bow:

That's because gush threads never approach the length of "debate" threads

Oh please. Michelle was a champion for years with unrivaled accomplishments and impact. That's truth, not gush.

And from what I've read on this thread, its not very "debate" heavy... I've seen fans and posters looking for actual, factual updates and then I've seen posts from people who know nothing rambling on about what they think will happen or Sasha's progress. We simply don't know.

But here's the real question: why root against Sasha's comeback at all? What is gained by it? Either she will or she won't. Personally, I hope she does come back... mainly because a rational view of Nationals isn't that promising when compared to the international level of competition. If she wins or places 2nd - great! She gets another shot at a medal. If she fails to earn a spot, she goes home. The US is no better and no worse.

Just like fan bashing former champs doesn't make current favs more competitive. Its all a bit silly, when you think about it.

 I knew that would touch someone off. But you know it's true :p

but seriously, I know the difference between "truth" and "gush". There's a difference between simply stating facts and fluffing them up. :p ;)

However, a minor rant here- some people like to continually rattle off Kwan's championship count whenever even some shadow of disagreement is encountered. I mean, gee wow, I had NO idea! Even though I watched her get many of those very championships being listed. Hello, Earth??? Honestly. I never understood this line of "defense" by some.

1) that's why I put "debate" in quotes :p and

2) yes, we don't know.

But here's the real question: why root against Sasha's comeback at all?

There are some reasons, believe it or not. :p What would a skating forum be without them? (NOTE: These are arbitrary reasons, not necessarily my own!!)

1) Let two DIFFERENT skaters get a shot at the Olympics. Cohen has been there already- not once, but TWICE! She's had her chances already.

2) Chances are, Cohen will fare no better (or not much better) than our ladies anyway. No use her going and taking up a spot if the US STILL won't get a medal in ladies.

3) Cohen is a brat, a diva and doesn't deserve to go.

4) Cohen is dealing with injury and therefore should not go, so we don't have a repeat of Kwan 2006

5) I want Cohen out of the picture so that my fave skater has a better shot at the Olympics

...and so on.

Personally, I'm not exactly rooting against her return (regardless of how it may seem I'm doing so) but I do have concerns with her in the picture. First, USFS- inflation pts? Will the selection of the team be fair? Can she stay healthy enough to do both Nats and Olys at her best? I kinda have feelings of reason 1 (and 2 in particular) as well.

Anyway, it would be a surprise if she shows up at Nats at all, an even bigger surprise IMO if she completes both segments of the competition.

Fine. After years of reading your posts, I do understand that YOU are not being a sucky whiny baby ... but sometimes OTHER posters bug me with the idea that longtime competitors are "taking the place of someone else" - Sasha herself is even guilty of this... but the truth of the matter is simple: if you feel that someone is taking up your spot, beat 'em. Out skate them. Win your spot and leave nothing up for debate. Its very simple: either you are better or you are not.

Why is this only an issue in ice skating? Other sports understand this... like football - The Patriots are just better than other teams, so if you want to beat them, you have to outplay them. Sports are not about who deserves to win. They are about who earned a win. We can wuz robbed all day long, but at the end of the day, if our favorites had been up to the task, they would've won. This includes Michelle, Irina, Elvis, Kurt, Brian and Shen & Zhao. Skate to win, baby. Its a pet peeve of mine and I will not let it go.

Sasha has gone to two olympics and if she skates well enough to earn a third trip, then good for her. If not, she can go work as a color commentator, start a blog, start coaching or return to SOI. Personally, I'd like to see her on DWTS.

Despite other posters' opinions, I never saw her as the darling of the organization. I doubt she'd be given a bye to the Olympics and I can't see USFSA gifting her a spot on the team... She was always more bridesmaid to Kwan's bride.

I will conceed that in a tight race for second, her PCS scores might give her an advantage...my only beef will come from her also being named to the World team - for all the points you outlined above - except for the diva piece - I like Sasha as Diva!

As to YOUR pet peeve... Kwan Nation has a rule in its bylaws that requires all citizens, myself included, to memorize all details of her illustrious career and bash them over the head of all detractors until they either a) slink away in shame b) apologize and knock it off or c)drink the kool aid and shut up while eating chicken and junior mints!!!

:bow:All hail the Kween - Keeper of the Light! (is that gushing I hear???)

What this thread needs is a rousing chorus of "Alexandra Pauline."

I agree, as long as the rules are followed and no "special case" is made up on the spot. By that point though it's kinda out of the skater's hands.

she seems to have a strong interest in fashion, make-up and other girly stuff. Can't picture her doing anything else

This is the one case where I THINK the Oly team will differ from the World team. I strongly doubt Cohen will want to go to Torino, especially after what happened in 2006- that was the one Worlds that she could have won fairly easily and still found a way to blow it

How about making a picture of Sasha with mullet hair?
I bet she would still look cute! :)

And happy holidays to all of Plushy's loyal and crazy fans.
Someone called me?

... happy holidays to all - and to "unloyal normal" fans

Okay Sasha. Nationals are in 3 weeks, when do we hear if she's definitely going or not? Or do we just assume she is until/unless she says otherwise?

thanks for bringing the thread back. Yes, we will not hear until Nationals week, I am sure. I would not be surprised if it was the night of the ladies short and we still don't know if Sasha will take he ice for her warm up or not.

If Sasha is going to W/D, I doubt she will before the start of Nationals. At least it's not like there is an alternate to take her spot, so there's no reason to hurry up and make a decision.

I wish we could get some reports on how her training is going!
