Disappointment has dogged promising American skater Evan Lysacek at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships. Three times he's skated well enough to win and three times he's been second. "My big goal since 2001 was to win Junior Worlds, but it wasn't meant to be," he said.

The good thing is though that he must have been really noticed and gotten a good reputation by the judges as a great top competitor. I think he actually may for future senior competitions have more use from his three silver medals than an one-time gold medalist without any other JWC medals....

I like this guy and his skating very much!!! It will be really exciting to see him in Worlds. Who knows, maybe he might be seen in Finlandia Trophy in fall 2004 (just dreaming...).

It's unlikely that Evan will go to Finlandia. The USFSA typically doesn't send top-5 skaters but gives lower-ranked skaters a chance to move into a better "envelope" (more funding) by medaling at Finlandia.

2003 Finlandia: Johnny Weir, Derrick Delmore (both WD/injury, '03 US Seniors)

2002 Finlandia: Ryan Jahnke (8th, '02 US Seniors), Matt Lind (4th, '02 US Juniors)

Evan is already "A" envelope due to his bronze medal at 4CC. As he's the 2003-2004 JGPF gold medalist, I think he's sure to get senior GP assignments this fall.

Yeah, you probably are right.... Glad though that we have gotten to see Cohen and Weir!!! And I was happy about Nikodinov also, although she was not in good condition after the injury.

I like what he says about Russian and American style, and am impressed that he wants to take the best of both worlds.

Who won in 01 and 02? (I want to say Klimkin for 01, am I crazy?)

I thought that Shubin rightfully won in 03, but I would have given the nod to Evan in 04. JMHO.

Johnny Weir won Junior Worlds in 2001, Daisuke Takahashi in 2002, Shubin in '03 and Griazev in '04.

Evan skated well in 2001, but Johnny was terrific and deserved the win. I didn't see JW Men's in 2002 -- no US man was vying for a medal so Lifetime didn't show the men.

2001 Results:
1 1 1 Weir
3 2 3 Lysacek
2 6 2 Restencourt

2002 Results:
1 1 2 Takahashi
2 3 1 Van Der Perren
5 2 3 Timchenko
Nicholas LaRoche was 10th

Hi Ptichka - That is what happened in ballet. The West got very conscious of Tehnique that the Russians had and Russian dancers saw how much freedom in dancing that the West had.
Result, there really is no "School" in ballet.

I think too, that that works in skating.

I see a rivalry between Evan and Andrej. I watched Andrej very carefully at Dortmund Worlds. He's good looking, good body and has natural air turns although his landings are very weak. The big surprise with Andrej is that his style is more like Kurt Browning than your typical Russian skater.

so, if Evan is going Russian, Andrej is going Western.

BTW, I think Andrej is Tarassova's favorite.
