Article where Mark Lund making controversial comments on Weir, Lysacek

I always find it interesting when the public gets all riled up about someone's personal business as though it is the world's right to know. It's not. Imagine the chaos and discord if Johnny trumpeted to the world that he is gay. He'd be accused of being a media hound who was trying to divert attention from what's happening on the rink. Of course, we've already seen what happens if he refuses to share his sexual orientation-- derision . What a Catch-22! He probably figures he can't win either way, so he might as well keep his private life, well, private.

Suri Cruise's baby pictures, Britney's new dog, Brangelina's adoptions-- these things aren't my business. Neither is Johnny Weir's sex life.

I don't think anyone was saying something about Johnny's sex life. The modus operandi seems, at least to me, to be flamboyant behaviour to which I say so what. We should, imo, be judging his skating, and if his costumes are a turn off, so be it. If not, wish him good luck at Nats, and Worlds.

I did not click on your link because I knew after I posted my last comments you would be back with that particular one. I made a boo boo, and you grabbed it. Am I correct it is about Zorro the Gay Blade? You do have a way of turning things to comedy.

Now speak up. Which athlete is flamboyant? and forget about professional performers who portray a myriad of characters.

Joe

You are always close, and some times right on, but just too general and is speculation (as am I ) and thinking to answer rather than provoke thought. It does not suffer BECAUSE of this, but is additional and getting more flamboyant over the years. Were there more people watching in Scott Hamlton's day?

This argument only holds any water if the only things that have changd in figure skating has been the costuming. Most people thought Hamilton's "costume" was a little too speed skater-like and i didn't hear much praise for it. In any event the costuming is not the only thing that has changed in FS since Hamilton's time to make people go off skating. Since then figures were abolished. That turned many older purists off the sport in one fell swoop. COP has resulted in many extremely knowledgeable skatefans stop attending competitions alltogether because of their disagreement with the new judging system. The whack caused interest in FS to rise to greater number in 1994...maybe i should use the rise in popularity then and attribute it to the flamboyant costume increase? You see where i'm heading with this argument don't you?

To say it would or wouldn't is speculation based on a fan base that is.
To say that FS popularity has gone down since Hamilton's days because of flamboyant costumes is just as big a speculation on your part.

Is anyone going to STOP watching if they had a rule to lessen the flamboyant? And the opposite is to a speculation. But one has statistics, the other is just "naw."

Depends how the rule change is worded. I'm a stickler for the wording of rules and whether they discriminate against anyone, and if i thought the rule was discriminatory against homosexuals i would stop watching and stop doing anything that ends up with my money being received by those bigots.

Disappointed, that is an exaggerative comment. But with the over exaggeration going on here so commonly trying to discredit via "ridiculous RE-wordings" I understand why.
It is sad to think that all off my points have been to "tone it down" - NOT ban - and still there are ones thinking I am saying get rid of it all together. Explains some of the popularity off FS due to fans right there.

Well i understood your comment to mean "banning" because you kept harping on about Katt Witts right to come out dressed like a showgirl being banned...that's where i drew the correlation to you wanting it banned. It also made my heckles rise because it came accross and exceptionally mysogonistic viewpoint...allow me to colourfully exagerate one last time to explain why i took offence. It seemed to me like you were saying that while you had no problem at all with a females dressing in very little (presumably for your own titllation) and were disgruntled about the rule you did have a problem with a potentially gay man dressing flamboyantly and felt it was unfair to not have a rule stopping them from dressing that way. I still don't understand the gay costuming and Jesus Christ while we're on this misunderstanding tip! But that is why i still don't understand why the two are connected - like MM said, dressing up in 5million sequins as a man does not say gay sex or even hint at it. COming out with your breasts all but on display is a very sexual image.

You can try to belittle the point all you want, but popularity and the correlation between "LIMITED" flamboyant behavior - whether speculation or not - still had a bigger fan base then what is has now with.

That comment there is the one that i think is plain wrong. If the only reason you think FS popularity has gone down over the years is flamboyant costuming then i can tell you categorically you are wrong. The main reason FS popularity as gone down in recent times is the over saturation of the pro market in the post whack boom. That is something that many sports writers and academics that have stryed into the FS arena have noted. People got sick of seeing the same pros week in, week out doing the same hammy prop filled routines in different "made for tv" specials. The second contributory factor, in the most recent of times is COP.

If they need to act like they are in a gay march parade or a Red lit district strut. Does it NEED to happen?

Does anything NEED to happen? Personally i don't care how anyone dresses, i'm a grown up with no kids...i would be perfectly happy for any skater to skate to Prince's Gett Off or Madonna's Erotica...i'd actually really enjoy it. I don't think anyone is harmed by a flamboyantly dressed man. Is anyone offended if Rudy skates in a black unitard with a red AIDS awareness ribbon around his neck? Or if Plushy wants to come out wearing a muscle suit and little tightt undies on? Or if Katt witt wants to cover herself in just a few feathers showing off her fabulous body? I personally am not offended by any of those things, but some people are. I suspect Rudy's is the least offensive of all. Some might take exception to Plushy because of the insinuation of nudity, i think more take offense at Katt's because it is overtly sexual.

AND AGAIN because no one seems to get it, I AM NOT SAYING COMPLETELY GET RID OF, just tone it down, so it appears to be under control - like a sport does.
I think there is more speculation to what I am really saying than actual comprehension. It is there, I just don't think some want to hear the truth, it is there but it must be read all before coming to conclusion.
But there are rules in place saying that overly theatrical costumes are not allowed. The costumes must be in keeping with the fact it is a sport. Yet until recently they forced women to wear skirts (what a practical skating outfit) and the men are not allowed to wear leggings or tights (which i think is more in keeping with the spandex all in ones used in other sporting events like track and field). They've made a rod for their own backs and its up to the skating establishment to enforce the rules as they see fit.

Ant, one worthy comment dictating answer.
Your ideas of what is offensive and it's degree of such - flamboyant vs. Sexual. That is just you. Flamboyancy and Sexuality (of course they are different you condescending little... ) but the amount of severity is relative to the individual and your or even the general populous, does not need to speak for the entire world as far as what is worse. That is opinion. Sexual expression can be just as important to "self expression" as "flamboyant" and neither one are NECESSARY IN FS.

Oh i see - my opinion is just an opinion...and yours is...??? For the record i don't think you understood many of my comments because the one you deemed worthy to reply to you appear to have misunderstood. The only thing i find offensive is discrimination. The reason i stated that the flamboyancy and sexuality were different were because you seemed to be equting the two there was no desire to condescend i was merely picking a flaw in your argument, no need to get offended just because your argument has holes in it :p ! And i don't know about you but the one thing i find in a skating perfomance that really draw me in is self expression. That i find totally necessary for skating performances to really grab me. That is why i love Michelle Kwan so much - because when she skates, whether or not it is true, the joy she conveys makes it look like she gives you a little window into her personality or her soul - for those four minutes that you watch her she exresses herself and that is what moves me most.

The ISU has a Code of Ethics. Should they also have a Code of Attire in Competition?

I know, I know, I know, a lot of figure skating fans adore the fashion show on ice. Some, I think more than the actual skating.

Joe

I have a friend who will never be into FS, and his input is more vital then someone who is a fan when you are considering factors that make FS less "appealing" then it once was to the US audence.

You see i disagree with this. I firmly believe (having never met your friend! HA!) that your fried will never be into figure skating, whether the men are less flamboyant or whether the men all have to wear black trousers and white shirts. I think the real issue he just never will get into the sport. I once had a long argument with someone who was trying to argue that if FS wanted to be more popular then it needed to become more masculine in order to attract bigger crowds. My argument back was the same as it is with anyone who entertains the, in my opinion, pointless arguement of FS being art or sport. FS is what it is - you accept it for what it is and you watch it and enjoy it or you don't. Nothing you can do to dress it up one way or another is going to change those opinions. Why should skating be made more masculine? There's a list as long as my arm of sports that are completely masculine and butch that those men can go and enjoy...why ruin the one that, for me and many others, stand out because it is both sport and art?

The thing that has happened as a result of this "flamboyancy" is exactly the problem, here we have the emphasis of attention on sexuality preference. this is due to the OVER prevalence of the question coming to mind in the first place. If the flamboyancy was not there to such a degree this would have been 10 times less likely to have been an issue. How could one speculate "riding the fence" if the issue was not apparent in the first place. If skaters like Johnny addressed FS more EQUALLY as a sport and not forcing so much attention on how unique and the sexuality, this never would have been an issue to begin with. I don't see these issues arising around Jeff Buttle. But Jeff appears to be more serious than Johnny when it comes to being a skater opposed to a "pop figure."
I actually agree with everything is this paragraph witht he exception of the wording in bold. You seem to want to address the flamboyance which in your opinion causes the questioning. I would argue that the its the stupid people questioning the sexuality that needs to be addressed. Why should be change the way people behave on the ice and what they wear because a minority of people start asking " are they gay? " whether you change the costuming or not they will still ask those questions. I know many people who do ask about Jeff's sexuality too. Where i agree is that Johnny is a unique individual who loves the attention. I think he loves it even more than Sasha! And yes he dos do things that bring attention to himself. To each their own, i love the fact he breaks the mold and there's no-one likes him. Others like comformists, the ones that don't want to rock the boat. And that's completely ok too.

I would say you Earn your right to be who ever you want to be known as once you go pro and have proved your worth in the competitive ranks, until then follow the guidelines and be an athlete. Even do your little advertising gig if you like, but the "personal business" stays off the ice.
Wow. I think that's pretty harsh. You have to earn yout right to be who you want to be? So you are not just allowed to be? I couldn't disagree more.

That is the whole point. If there was not so much flamboyant behavior and obvious "attempts at getting attention" in the first place then this never would have been an issue. The fact it is an issue is PROOF that the balance has become skewed and there is attention on things that have no reason other then a skater getting more attention and not for skill but "their voice in the community."

BUt then what you're actually saying is that you disagree with the way johnny behaves. That i can understand and i don't have any problem with. Its the generalisations you are making because of one person that is really distrubing. "Tone down this" and "behave more like that" in general is what you are saying but if you actually mean "Johnny shut up and skate...take the thorny corwn ribbon off your head and show us a 4T/3T/3Lp like you did in Torino practices" that i understand. Are there any other skaters you are commenting on being "flamboyant"?

If one is to think that "freedom of expression is going to suffer" if the guidelines to how flamboyant an outfit or behavior can be, then "expression" is in question. Why could they convey expression in the past without such extremes?
Why is it necessary to implicate sexual preference, and why is that allowed when there is not supposed to be any strong sexual overtones anyway?

I personally am happy with the rules as they are. I don't think the costumes are "too flamboyant" and i am struggling to think of anyone else you could be talking about other than Johnny...who, for the record, i don't think is any more flamboyant that what we see from nearly every dance couple out there! I've already stated several times that knowing or implying someone's sexual orientation is not offensive. Some people may be turned off by a particular skater because of it (lord knows i was turned right of Mike Weiss with him parading his baby around being oh so macho) and i accept some might be turned off by overtly gay men. The knowledge of someone's sexuality is, in my opinion, a completely different thing to being overtly sexual. That to me suggests showing sexual organs or simulating or hinting at sexual acts.

Flamboyant men have a correlation to a sexual preference - be that the morally correct thing or not, a fact is a fact.
Tell that to overwhelming number of straight transvestites...that fact is also a fact. Look up Eddie Izzard if you get a chance - he's a stand up comedian turned actor from the UK who is an out straight transvestite!

G-strings and feather butts have strong implications to sexual morality - be that the morally correct thing or not, a fact is a fact. One might offend more then another to any given individual, the fact remains they can both be "offensive" and their importance is ZERO if f FS is the TRULY the main concern.

It is, you are right. But the point i am making is that some things are regarded by a majority of people as being correct to be offended by, and others not. Most people will agree that nudity will offend people and people have every right to be offended by it if they wish. Small children should be protected from it and any overtly sexual behaviour. Where is the "right" offense in someone dressing "flamboyantly"? Is it just the speculation of the persons sexuality? Are we just as offended by a Stojko costume with leather harness and leather wrist bands skating to dragon heart because he "could" be a gay leatherman? Or any more offended because of the way he's actually trying (albeit strangely) to emphasise his straightness?

And I am sorry to disagree, but anyone that thinks Johnny picked the passion JUST BECAUSE IT WAS A GOOD ROUTINE:laugh: That is totally laughable. He picked it because it would cause controversy and give him attention. DUH! That is where "using" one aspect of FS is not in balance with the other. ANd his skating has also suffered whether it be the reason or not, JW's skating is not following up on the attention he is getting.

BUt isn't this what all of your posts have actually been about? You think Johnny is over the top. You think that he hasn't skated well enough yet to warrant his on ice persona and off ice antics? If that is what's really behind your posts then criticse johnny. Don't try to legislate and right the rules for FS based on one figure who it at odds with what you like to see on the ice and who is at odds with nearly everyone else on the ice. Criticse him and him only if that is the case. Its the generalisations that i take issue with. I can't think of any other skater to which any your posts could apply.

And last (not that I am a fan of Lund) BUT Lund is acting in defense of gays where Jonhnny is using it to his personal gain, is the point. Lund acted inappropriately but his intent is more admirable then one who rides the wave of attention with no regard for those who it has effect.

In your opinion! In mine, as a gay man, Lund is acting in his OWN interests for personal gain and notoriety. As i said before Lund is a disgrace to gay men, just because he is out he shouldn't be speculating int he media on someone else's sexuality. He is trying to rally support for himself from the gay community. Like i said, johnny keeping tight lipped in public about his sexuality is his prerogative. He doesn't try to gain support from them. Going for a fashion shoot wearing high heels and make up will alienate him enough from a gay community who seems (at this moment in time) to be obsessed with being "straight acting and straight looking". Johnny likes to push people's buttons. I like that in him - its a trait i like generally in people. Afterall if it weren't for the in-your-face drag queens Stonewall might never have happened.

Ant

Ant, I don't think you are getting what I am saying. It appears you are taking it personally with a view that I did not mean to indicate.

Some of the remarks to my posts are exactly what I am trying to say - i.e friend never going to like FS and the reasons there in. The fact that it is speculation on my part I am stating - these are ALL things I am already saying.

eta. this is not just the fault of the skaters, the media is equally to blame - maybe that is something that is not standing out in my posts????

The Flamboyancy I AGAIN WILL CLARIFY is additional issue to the fading of FS. Your judgment is valid but totally skewed with personal feeling. It is NOT that they are gay - I can't believe how many times I have had to say this - this is NOT the concern to really anyone. It is the actions that focus more on the showy artsy factors rather then retaining a balance between to sport AND the art. I don't see how you are continually missing this point. It is not because it says anyone IS gay, it is because the forum for this self expression is SUPPOSED TO BE A SPORT! People like Johnny (ALTHOUGH I LOVE WATCHING HIM SKATE AND LISTEN TO HIS INTERVIEWS, You could defiantly say I cheer for him and admire his skills) but he is taking the attention that FS gives him and turning it into a story of Johnny being more important then the skating. From the appearance of the way JW addresses FS it might as well be on tour as a broadway show.

There is a time for you to "exhibit your wears" and the level of competitive skating in discussion here is not that place IMO. And It appears with so little of the populous feeling as though it is a valid sport, this is something of a "perception" factor. So if people perceive skating as a bunch of dudes out on the ice showing off their costumes and drawing attention to themselves then then there is obviously an issue with perception.

If I am harsh, GOOD, SPORTS ARE HARD!

The "whack" DID NOT CASE MORE INTEREST IN FS!!!!!!!! I don't know how you are wording / interpreting this at all. I keep hearing this comment and it IS NOT TRUE. The whack caused interest in the whacker and whackee, and for a short time. Since 88 the interest (real interest in FS not the public figures etc..) was on the decline and has not stopped with any type of substantial recognition. And the Tonya Nancy was nothing more then a "spike" in viewers who were more interested in the "fluff" then the substance.

" like MM said, dressing up in 5million sequins as a man does not say gay sex or even hint at it. COming out with your breasts all but on display is a very sexual image. "
I totally do not agree with this being people perception. IT SHOULDN'T But it does. Deal with the facts, not what should or shouldn't be according to personal morals. I think this is the biggest problem that is happening with reading my posts on this topic. There is a should be and what is. It maybe the morally reprehensible fact that what is and what should be are different, but that is the facts Jack. Sorry.

"The only thing i find offensive is discrimination." - Antmanb
I so agree with this, I felt is was BS on the skirt rule for the ladies and do not feel that a "flamboyancy factor" in FS it's self has anything to do with sexual preference. That is ME. That is YOU. That is the way it should be but is not.

You don't see why or how, and I don't agree with these perceptions, but they are there like it our not. There are narrow minded idiots out there, and obviously more then you know about - one that saw Max and Tat thought Max was gay because he agreed to wear peach, that is OUTRAGEOUS! But it was real and common.

Last time I hope to address your Christ and Johnny, he picked it to get attention. He choose this as a controversial topic to skate to. And why was it???? DUH. That is all I mean by this and meant to point out that he is guilty of the same "shameless self promotion" as Lund is.

The reason there was only one that I felt worthy of replying to was it was the only one that you seemed to understand my point and present an opposite one. The rest was disagreeing with what you thought I was saying which was just misleading and to self opinionated to what I was meaning to just sit there and correct are the misled thoughts and point out we are acutely in agreement as people and our values, but you aren't seeing the world as it is - more as you wish it was.

I could care less about anyones thoughts about Lund or JW when saying they are both distracting from FS and turning it into a soap opera MORE then it once was. If you think that the fact what was once a soap opera helped FS in the past, that is totally wrong. Look where it is. Your project plan is 2 months and nothing after that.

And for those (as I once did myself) that take a comment like Uniform as meaning everyone wears the same thing, take another look. That is not the case. This is the over exaggerative that is not helping, There is a "in between in there" that it appears a lot of people just don't get. Particularly the idea of compromise. Johnny for example has his whole life as a pro to draw attention to himself in addition to his skating, no that he or anyone is in the Comp Ams on a senior level or any with-in it, let's have the focuse be on sport and art, not how outrageous one can be to get the most attention.

BTW, the first comment you quoted was directed to MM.

I don't find Johnny Weir's costumes overly weird or strange. They sure are a heck of a lot better than Brian Joubert's costumes, to say nothing of some of the Russian men's costumes (Klimkin and Griazev, to name two). Johnny's costumes look normal compared to some of Emanuel Sandhu's horrors--the yellow one this year is gaggingly bad.

Well that is not what I think to said degree. And for clarification, "hammy prop filled routines in different "made for tv" specials" I would also conceder a definition of Flamboyant. Flamboyant to me is a action that is often associated with homosexuality, BUT not a defining factor. Mike Wiess 70s routine at BBSS was flamboyant IMO. And Pros is fine for that. Big issue here is the fact the casual viewer can't tell the difference other then the lighting - and you have to tell them a prop is NOT a costume - it must be defined as a hat, or pull away costume over a costume or a red ball:love:   . It is not as obvious as one would think it should be. But this is from people who don't care - and in some cases yet.

Here is some more controversy for you. ;)

I think it would be nice (even though I still will be watching and loving no matter) -

there is a SP, short programme - no costumes, team approved line of differing attire

QR, qualifying round - no costumes, practice attire

LP, Long programme - approved costume (and just for the record Ira's tux out fit had an issue that was more controversial then Katt Witts Vegas Girl IMO.)

And a FS, Free Skate which is now known as the exhibition not counting in score. What ever goes but no props.

I should be fair, sorry. The biggest one for men that is "over the line" IMO is S. Lambiel's animal madness. Ridiculous and I would not approve if it were up to me.

If i'm reading homophia into your posts its because something in them is saying it, be it passive agressive but its there. If i seem to be taking it personally its because i vested interest. I am not actually taking any of it personally just shouting loudly where i understood discriminatory comments were being made.

Well this is the first time you've mentioned the media up until now i felt like you were blaming the "gay" skaters.

The Flamboyancy I AGAIN WILL CLARIFY is additional issue to the fading of FS.
THANK YOU!!!! At last - read back through your posts - in one you hint that it is part of greater picture of the fading interst in FS but in all of the others it very much looks like you are putting the balme of fading interest in FS in the flamboyantly dressed.

I don't think you've said it is not because they are gay nearly enough. The discussion was brought on by Lund discussing his flamboyant costuming and telling him to come out. Forgive me for assuming the same thing in your remarks but i don't think there was anything left to think of it that way, expecially when in one you posts you seemed to be saying that Lund was acting in a noble wasy on behalf of the gay community. If this is purely about flamboyant costuming then why did you make the link between flamboyant costumes and people asking themselves if a skater is gay because of it. In my mind when you do that and say that people will be turned off, it is because to those people sexuality matters and their like or dislike of people can be based in sexuality.

So Johnny behaves like a diva and like he's part of the holywood A-list. Is that so bad? You seem to think it detracts from what is going on on the ice but i would disagree. You guys North America get much more fluff and information about the skaters off ice during broadcasts of the competitions. Outside of the US (well maybe more in the UK and most of maninland Europe) they show the competition and post competition interviews. Things like Olympic Ice and other review programs just don't exist. The most you hear about Johnny from the British Eurosport commentators is that he's "very outspoken" and we may have heard about Camille before the SP. But that's it. If you're skating fan then you watch the skating and that's it. If you're a celebrity fan (or fan of a specific skater) then you'll dig up what you can on them and make a judgment.

Can i ask you a question - is it just the Jesus costume that you find overly flamboyant such that it takes away from the purity of the figure skating or are there others. Are there other skaters who you would include in this debate?

There is a time for you to "exhibit your wears" and the level of competitive skating in discussion here is not that place IMO. And It appears with so little of the populous feeling as though it is a valid sport, this is something of a "perception" factor. So if people perceive skating as a bunch of dudes out on the ice showing off their costumes and drawing attention to themselves then then there is obviously an issue with perception.

I agree that there is an issue with perception, but the salient question is - is it big enough that something needs or should be done about it? My Answer to that is no there isn't. Make them skate in uniforms or make them sakte in speed skaters clothes, the people that have an issue with skating will still have an issue with it because its not just the "fruity costumes" it is the girly extension and lines, its the sissy upright posture and extension of your free leg that causes the issue in perception. And people who cannot appreciate the baeuty of the sport never will until you make it a jumping contest.

If I am harsh, GOOD, SPORTS ARE HARD!

And they're even harder if you have to look good doing them. This seems to be straying dangerously into the is FS a sport or art debate which as i've said i think is pointless.

The viewing figures do not lie, the BBC int he uk which was solely concetrated on Torvill & Dean's re-instatement and attempt at Olympic gold did not cover anything else...until the whack. Interest was piqued by it and everyone was thereafter interested in Both Nancy and Tonya. The sport was exposed to more people and the popularity did increase.

" like MM said, dressing up in 5million sequins as a man does not say gay sex or even hint at it. COming out with your breasts all but on display is a very sexual image. "

It maybe the morally reprehensible fact that what is and what should be are different, but that is the facts Jack. Sorry.

Have you done a poll? Have you conducted actual research and canvassed people and asked them the question? If you haven't then there is no fact. Some people might just as some people might not. Colour me utterly confused...a man skating in a costume dripping with sequins connjures images to a majority of people of gay sexual act/intercourse? If that is the case then i am beyond surprised at the imagination of some (and left scartching my head at how wrong pornographers appear to have gotten it...apparently all you need is a whole bunch of sequins and hey presto! )

I am guilty of assuming that you agreed with the statements you were making. I hold my hands up say that you've put the record straight - i thought you were agreeing with stupid attitudes that some people may have about the costuming and about the IMO wrong conclusions they draw. For that i'm sorry. Maybe it wishful thinking on my part and maybe i'm just too idealistic (honestly in this world sometimes you have to be otherwise you'd throw the towel in!) but i genuinely do not believe that the MAJORITY make this bigotted leaps. I think (and hope beyond all hope) that it is the MINORITY of people who think this way.

But like you have just pointed out that was one comment and an idiotic one, that does not majority opinion make. The reason i lash out against an argument that says well it is the public perception and there's nothing you can do about it, is that there are many things you can do about it. You challenge those stupid views and make it clear they're unnacceptable. You try not to perpetuate the idea by keep saying it is the majority view (especially without proof) because people then think its ok because its what the majority think. Just because a lot of people think it does it make it valid? Certainly not, if it is nonsensical that someone thinks a skater is gay because they wear peach then people should say. One man thinking Max is gay cos he wore peach could probably even find a majority of beer swilling straight men to agree with him. We all KNOW that that is stupid. So do we say to ourselves - they don't know what they are talking about and ignore them, or if we're real gluttons for punishment try and make them change there view about it? OR do we say - heck a majority of straight men think a skater might be gay because he wears peach we need to fix it, and issue a rule saying no men are allowed peach costumes.

That is the crux of our argument i think. And taking out the potential mis-interpretations about gayness or anything else. Read the above again substituting the fact that the peach costumes makes him gay with "the peach costume distracts me so much that i don't appreciate the skating". I think the same conclusion is reached you say to the man - if you can't look beyond the costume then you're an idiot...its a costume get over it! I understood you to be making the point that rule change should be effected in order to "better" skatings perception. My opinion is that it shouldn't because it will never please all of the people (or even a majority of people) all of the time. The objective should be for it be what it is not what everyone in the world thinks it should be.

I think we're both guilty of seeing the world from our own perspectives, not just me. The other thing i always fail to comprehend is how behind the US is terms of equal rights. While i might feel that the UK can be very homophobic and sexist its nothing compared to the US. When discussing human rights with an American friend i nearly fell off my chair when i was told that there is no equivalent legilation in the US to the UK's Equal Pay Act which states that women have a right to be pad the same as aman for doing the same job. I guess i might have quite an idealistic viewpoint on the world but i think i live in a slightly more idealist world than you might. (of course we get no skating coverage so protection of rights and freedoms comes at a cost!!).

Your friend got it wrong. American law mandates equal pay for equal work, and has done so since 1963.

If i'm reading homophia into your posts its because something in them is saying it, be it passive agressive but its there. If i seem to be taking it personally its because i vested interest. I am not actually taking any of it personally just shouting loudly where i understood discriminatory comments were being made.
You are reading into it but rightfully so for there are people in this word who are homophobic just as some can't handle a topless beach and I am trying to present their opinions as well as the ones I feel without to much clear designation.

People are freaky. And since I have been on here enough to slightly feel comfortable disclosing this (for I hate to be misunderstood) my very first ah - I lost my virginity to a man before a woman. We dated up until I lost my virginity to a woman - if that is possible to "loose" twice:laugh:

I am also often though of and asked if I am Gay. I in someways enjoy the thought that people think I am and feel strongly about people not getting a clue.

And if Johnny came up to me puckering I would plant one right back on the guy - same with Brad Pitt, but that is about it since my "lady encounter" of 83. But I have no issue with looking at a guy and thinking he is cute. I just don't feel the urge to act on it IYKWIM.
Well this is the first time you've mentioned the media up until now i felt like you were blaming the "gay" skaters.
Not the first time an obvious to me was not conveyed, the underlining factor in that is it should not be so easy to dig that dirt up.

The thing is I get both sides of the original argument to Lund's comments.
THANK YOU!!!! At last - read back through your posts - in one you hint that it is part of greater picture of the fading interst in FS but in all of the others it very much looks like you are putting the balme of fading interest in FS in the flamboyantly dressed.
It happens all the time with my posts, I must be thinking that people would kknow better then to think I would ever blame one aspect without considering others. The Flamboyant thing maintained focus because it was brought to light via Lunds (poorly chosen and derogatory) comments.
I don't think you've said it is not because they are gay nearly enough. The discussion was brought on by Lund discussing his flamboyant costuming and telling him to come out.
I think the issue for my wording is that Gay was not the associated factor of flamboyant to start, there fore never felt it necessary to clarify for it in my mind was not the definition of flamboyant. The problem is that that is what A LOT OF PEOPLE think.

But Yah, Brian J Gay??? I don't think so, yet some of his outfit most definitely are flamboyant.

If you're skating fan then you watch the skating and that's it. If you're a celebrity fan (or fan of a specific skater) then you'll dig up what you can on them and make a judgment.
The thing is I am running test on people, going to bars having them put on skating, taking disks to friends houses when they have other friends over and getting feedback. Some are sold with some knowledge usually about the elements and blade / edges use. and then we get to the men. The girls are even distracted by some of the men's attire and actions. It is not just me (for I like it, My Way is one of the favorite outfits on a man for me, but I see why others are detracting).
Can i ask you a question - is it just the Jesus costume that you find overly flamboyant such that it takes away from the purity of the figure skating or are there others. Are there other skaters who you would include in this debate?
I do NOT find the Christ costume flamboyant at all in it's self. The routine in it's self is nice, but why Johnny choose this is flamboyant and shameless self promotion. Either that or he is part of the religious sect (that there is surprisingly) that ignore the fact Jesus said ( I am going out on a limb here for I am not looking this up) any man who lies with another man is guilty of sin regarding a conversation on sex. But how much do I trust this comment???? But the majority of the "believers" believe this.
Johnny could be thinking whatever he wants on this but to not be aware that a skater with Johnny's "open minded attitude" and one has to presume that he is at the very least a supporter of Homosexual rights and he is now portraying Christ? If he didn't think this would get him attention in a strong and "gospel" way, then Johnny is a complete fool. I do not believe Johnny to be a complete fool so It is my undeniable belief that he choose this as "shameless self promotion. That is all. I heard comments about Shizuka skating with the crosses in illusion fabric on her, and some of the crosses were in "reveling" places. "Blasphemy" one said, another called her a heretic. - side note, just because I "know" some people does not mean I am friends with them. I go with the theory "you have to work with that which is in order to make a change that will last and show the truth." So I do talk and show respect for people even when I loath their opinions sometimes. This is the only thing that makes a difference I have found, opposed to it just staying the same or even getting worse.

This is the fine line where I believe our ideas are crossing back and forth. Yes and no to the above. But the one thing that I see is that I am going and finding this info out via interactions with these people. Some will like it if they understand it. The attitude they will never if they don't already was found false SO QUICKLY in these personal endeavors i discount it as soon as I hear it. There are some that don't now that will. It is a fact. The problems are understanding and fear getting "flack" from others. If SLIGHT changes can be made, and the community stops doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting this time "they will stay fans with this soap opera" etc... No harm no foul (yah Toni I caught it:laugh: ) And everyone wins. From Homophobic becoming more open minded and not judging based on appearance to the skaters making more money, generating more interest, meaning more fans and whantabes, meaning a deeper field of skaters, etc....

"I do believe I know when to get off a sinking ship. I just think the engine is dead and the mechanics are trying to start it with water."
And they're even harder if you have to look good doing them. This seems to be straying dangerously into the is FS a sport or art debate which as i've said i think is pointless.
It is simple, if it is not about balance then it is one or the other, period.
The sport was exposed to more people and the popularity did increase.
for 3 months and the attention was for what, the skating or the soap operas?
... it is the public perception and there's nothing you can do about it, is that there are many things you can do about it.
That is the crux of our argument i think. And taking out the potential mis-interpretations about gayness or anything else.
Sitting on our hands and doing nothing or saying there is nothing that can be done is (OK FAR STRETCH example from SeaniBu) the same theory that Rosa Parks should have just given up her seat for it wasn't going to make a difference anyway. I don't buy into the "it's just never going to" there are far to many variables involved. It is not like a man being able to fly, OR IS IT? It just takes a "vehicle" to do so.
Read the above again substituting the fact that the peach costumes makes him gay with "the peach costume distracts me so much that i don't appreciate the skating".
Let me note that he is a fan of Ladies FS now, and understood once I said, " so what did you wear to prom bud? Did your date pick the color of your cumberbun? And Gay or not, that guy is getting what I am sure you wish you had, tons of adoring do anything fans."
I just took a thought that showed some respect by correlating his experience with reality rather than presumption. He, like others even of this forum, don't watch the Men, but have a new respect for them AND don't rush to judgment anymore.

Pushing someone into a pool, they will likely immediately want out thrashing and yelling. Telling them and showing them how nice refreshing and fun it is, then they will jump in themselves and enjoy it for some time to come.

As far as the "soap opera" interest, there you have the difference between a "squirt bottle" and a pool.
:agree:

then there are some of us who refuse to go in period. ;) I'll wade in, but I never commit to the idea of swimming... ;)

Re: Scott Hamilton's costumes - they were an awful choice, made his head look 3 times as big as the rest of his body... and they were speedskater 'costumes' he ordered them from a speed skater company according to his autobiography... and you can *I guess* blame it on homophobia as he did not like the sequins and glitter and the average Joe in America's thought that skaters are gay.

Seanibu -
" like MM said, dressing up in 5million sequins as a man does not say gay sex or even hint at it

It does in Boxing. And as a boxing fan you should know the fearful call of maricon!

Geesh Joe, that is a harsh example. And yah, weird how here he beat someone to death - most likely due to that comment - then winds up being a homosexual himself.

Swan lake

OK, I made it through page 3 and none had even mentioned the attacks on the Camille program which is one of the best programs ever put together. Dick Button, Peggy Fleming and Peter Caruthers were all just telling Johnny that it is his best work and that he should bring it back to Nationals this year! What was that all about? Marl Lund has brusied needs!
