Artur Werner Worlds article (translation)

Thanks Ptichka for the translation. It is great to be able to read controversial pieces that don't come here; it gives a different picture from the travelogues we see from the American commentators. They gave the impression that Johnny was a big favorite in Russia due to his style and efforts to try to speak the language. (the Cyrillic support signs in the audience etc.) iIs Artur Werner an exception to this?

Russian audience truly loves Johnny for his artistry and elegance (few people know that he is learning Russian). They cheered him and many were distressed when he did not get bronze. And many, any people really believed that he deserved silver. He was obviously the most popular non-Russian skater at the Championship. The commentators and specialists also admired him and said that he would be Plushenko's main rival at the Olys.
Artur Werner's has very special views on everything ... and generally few people shares them.

Mildly amusing but not his best critique. My problem with Russians in geneal is that they all suffer from so called passion which they believe must be shown outwardly as they do.
Joe, You nailed it this time.

but that's what makes russian skaters the best. they are not afraid to show their emotions like north american skaters also they don't fear the gay label the us media gives their male skaters

Johnny is pretty flaming and I think he would have had a really hard time achieving success 15 years ago. And even now there have been grumblings behind closed doors at the USFSA that he needed to change.
Regarding the grumblings, how do you know that or is it common knowledge? Just curious. What is he supposed to change into???

Dee, He should change into another Yagudin clone. All male skaters should be like Yagudin. It's killing very talented skaters like Griazev and Dobrin, imo.

I've never seen either of these guys skate. Do you mean that their style is too much like Yagudin's, or not enough like Yagudin's?

Yag-esk

Too funny. Joubert has been hammered on this very forum for being too Yag-esk.

I think the knock on these skaters is that they try to copy Yagudin's style instead of developing a style of their own. Yagudin could get away with a lot of cutsie-pootsie stuff, like dancing on his toes, which does not suit Graziev's and Joubert's skating at all.

I love Gene Kelly!!! Astaire is awesome also but Gene Kelly has my heart! What a cutie! And Irish to boot, they are the handsomest of all! Not even just Singing In The Rain, I love all his films.
Well, that's true enough. But Fred Astaire was THE MAN!!!!!!

Look at what developing his own style has done for Evan Lysacek? That Hollywood dancing style suits his tall, skinny frame to a T. And his style / look is unique among the male skaters.

Regarding skating styles, I don't find anything effeminate in Jeff Buttle, just a perfect feeling of music and sense of rhythm (although obviously it is rare for a man). I've become Jeff's fan after the World Championship ( I have't seen him before). I liked his performance in LP the best (no matter he fell down). His elegance and grace is unique.
IMHO Sandhu is bizarre and eccentric, but I don't think that it's because of his ballet background. Johnny Weir is very effeminate and sooo much pretentious.

Thanks, you said what I want to say about these three after reading a few posts here. Among these three, only Weir's skating I felt very effeminate, but may be he is younger than the other two? Like someone else said Plushy's style when he was youn also looks kind of effeminate.

I don't like the effeminate skating by man in genral. But I have no problem with any skater's sexaul orie, it's their private life they can do whatever they like. And I don't think there is a direct link between skater's sexaulty preference and their skating style. I like both Lambial and Jeffery's style, although one is streight the other is not.

I read a Johnny profile last winter (which I can't find now) which mentioned that "individuals" in the USFSA were critical of his physical appearance. I remember the article mentioning specifically that Johnny dyed his hair and some people didn't like it so he returned to his natural color. It was one of the few concessions he made as far as his appearance goes.

What the judges want Johnny to change into is anyone's guess. I suspect they would prefer a more conservative look.

I assume you are saying that Jeff is gay, which I think is speculation on your part. As far as I know, Jeff has not made public comments about his sexual orientation.

Was anyone in this thread speculate Brian, Judges, etc. that they are gay? Whatever I heard the 'rumore'.

One interesting paragraph was the part about Plushenko and Mishin still being obsessed with chasing the ghost of Alexei Yagudin.

MM

I don't think that Plush is so much. But, more Mishin. Remember, mishin was talking alot ( & I mean Alot ) of smack( bashing Alexei) in the press & everytime you turned around in 2002. Plush was the current world champ & alexei had a poor end season that carried over into the goodwill games When he crashed head 1st into the boards while doing his 4/3. & once again Lost to Plush & hell Even Michael Weiss & came in 3rd at that event. So After the GPF, where alexei won & wouldn't comment on mishin. & after the Olympics Alexei let it all hang out. & Gave Mishin a tonge lashing. I think it is or was more about Alexei M. & Alexei Y. Boy, were those the good old days.

Whether Jeff is gay or not is irrelevant. He has his own style and he is not a clone. Canadian skaters do have their own individual style. He is not like Stoiko or Sandhu and no one is like Browning! Plushenko is slightly different from Yagudin.
