Bad move!!!!

The Urmanov strut!

I'm glad this is no longer around, but for a while, the dying on the ice got positively old!

I actually miss the dying on the ice scene! :)

I am not a fan of the butt spin either, where the fellas are in a sit position, then holding the blade they straighten their spinning leg, so that they are spinning face down/butt up - it's just not right IMO!

I think I noticed Rachel Flatt doing this spin - for the record, I kind of like the sping, but her spinnning leg was bent at the knee and I found it distracting (not picking on her, just the funny position).

This thread made me laugh!

I don't like the move a lot of guys do - it's a spin where they hold their leg up in front of them, but usually have a fairly deep knee bend on the spinning leg and just basically look as if the leg they are holding is really, really heavy.
Emma, I agree, if you can't do it like Rudy Galindo then don't even do it. Johnny's does a pretty good job.

What about when the skater changes to a forward edge on a sit spin. Most of the the time the skater loses their sit position ( and the centering) and they are struggling to get around those revs for higher COP levels.

Congratulation to Alissa who does it well but for at least 90% of skaters. STOP

Any stripping move, or faux "ethnic" move/costume...
Very very trite!

Taking clothes off on the ice ( Candeloro, this applies chiefly to you..)
The labored "complex" entries into death spirals. Give me the Protopopovs! Give me Tai and Randy ! Or G and G!

The spiral sequences that pairs are doing now to comply with COP. They are cookie cutter and I hate the leg extended in front of the skater. Yuck!

I want a simple scratch spin like Paul Wylie used to do! The complex spinning positions were neat when done by master spinners like Ruh or Lambiel. They look awkward and slow for most to me.

Dick used to fuss often about the flailing arms and I gotta agree! I think Plushenko never did pull completely free of this.

Wow! I feel good now --all unburdened! There IS a LOT I do like ,though!

I would add fake sword fighting to the fake instrument playing.

I hate most spiral sequences. Individual spirals are lovely, but more than two together and it usually gets ugly. The skater either slows down, or can only do two difficult positions well.

Ugh. I hate the butt spin too, and I even saw some of the ladies doing it. Stop, oh stop!

Oh god yes, STOP WITH THE BUTT SPIN. Rachael Flatt did it in both her SP and LP this year, I think, and it looked so fugly. Definitely not a ladylike position!

Gosh, I'm in the minority here, but I love the fan spiral when done well. I liked Emily Hughes' this year and always, Sasha Cohen's. Also love the charlotte, but it has to be done well (SC) and held for a long time. I love a split falling leaf. I don't like an outside spread eagle with bent knees. I also don't like the spiral with high leg and lower upper body. It ruins the line. I'm also a fan of the good old fashioned layback with nice turned out knee. I don't like that now they have to change positions so many times, you can't appreciate a good position when they hit one.

Good thread!

I think they make them change the positions to hide the bad positions, in a way. Many ladies (like Irina) cannot do a classic layback to save their life...so they've added these multitudes of positions--a Biellmann isn't even a layback! It was never categorised as such, but now it's a variation...

But anyway, yes--notice Irina's layback looks better when she does it catchfoot...

in eligibles, I don't like

- any crotch-flashing moves (fan spiral, gyno-inspection lifts in pairs and dance, that DS variation the french pair did a few years ago (complete with diamond shaped reinforcement highlighting the crotch)

- arms a' flailing all over the damned place

- veggie chopping footwork

- butt-flashing spins

- biellmann positions (a formerly cool, then okay move has now become loathesome thru overuse).

- multiple jumping passes with nothing inbetween (I'd like to see more than two jumping passes in a row with no spins or footwork sequences in between get deductions)

- fugly positions in spins in general, just because you _can_ contort yourself does not mean you _should)

- helicopter arms (stuck straight out at the shoulders at all times, not common now, but it marred a lot of 70's and 80's free skating)

- pantomime on ice! (playing instruments, punching, driving, swordfighting, smoking etc, I'll make an exception for Fleur Maxwell, the only skater who can mime holding a flower in the air and not make me ill)

For a lot of these, I don't blame skaters but poorly thought out COP guidelines (multiple fugly positions spins and awkward painful split positions in spirals esp.)

I agree, seanibu. The instrument-playing on ice isn't good. Interpret the music. Don't dumb down the interpretation. Fans aren't stupid lol (Didn't someone pretend they were playing a violin once?!)

Not just Violin but also air piano.....and :gasp: it was Yagudin!!! The road to artistic perfection was littered with problem spots for him!!!

I'm also not a fan of the forward inside sit spin - I was always taught it was poor technique, and it looks sloppy to me!

Do you mean back inside? A forward sit spin is meant to spin on the inside edge - the cahnge of edge for a forward sit is to an outside edge (which is very ugly too).

But the king of ugly spins for me at the moment is the forward upright edge done on an outside edge - the skaters look like they're about to fall over...urgh!

I knew there was another move. Since we're not naming names, I will only say that one of the men in the 90's had what I thought of as the Chicken Dance move -- standing on the ice, legs bent, knocking his knees together like he was using an invisible thighmaster or something. It looked especially bizarre done to classical music.

Oh come on - name and shame - it was urmanov!!! Didn't he also do a chicken dance with his arms in the same routine?!

Change of edge spirals when skaters don't know their edges

The crotch showing fan spiral

props that have little to do with a program

skaters who dance with chairs

very few ladies can get away with spirals in which they touch the ice with their hands.

and how can I forget the lovely catch foot spiral

I don't like it when skaters touch the ice with their hands or fingertips during their program. I saw one skater do this a few times at nationals and it was kind of irritating.. not sure how it adds to the program.
