British and Irish Figure skating 2022-2023

Like @La Rhumba, I am still on the old Eurosport Player. But, we also have BT Sport bundled in with our broadband. We subscribed to BT Sport solely for the MotoGP (and the other series that were bundled in with the MotoGP rights).

Ever since the joint venture between British Eurosport and BT Sport was first announced, it was made clear that Discovery+ would become available to BT Sport subscribers. So, I'll finally cancel Eurosport Player either when that happens, or when my annual Eurosport Player subscription is due for renewal in February. (It would have been due up this week, except that we got credited with 4 extra months a couple of years ago due to no sport happening during the first lockdown). Whichever comes first.

Whatever happens, I will be getting Discovery+. Once all the changes happen, nearly all the sports I watch will be available via Discovery. The only ones that won't will be the figure skating (on Viaplay) and the Formula 1 (on Sky). As we all know by now, you can get the figure skating on YouTube with a VPN, so there is no point in subscribing to Viaplay when I am not interested in any of the other sports they will have. (Although, that may change if they pinch any more of the things that I watch from Discovery).

To be honest, I am getting to the stage that I may stop watching F1 because, with the way the new owners are increasing the number of races per season, it is getting too much. Hey, I stopped watching snooker a few years ago for the exact same reason. Thankfully, we got Sky Sports F1 as part of the HD Pack (indeed, it was the reason we got HD). So, we are not paying for any of the other Sky Sports channels just to watch it.

Reading about the tiers for Viaplay in Norway, I hope that the "new" Discovery+ will have a similar structure, i.e. having:

  • the football in the top tier
  • all the other sports in the middle tier
  • the non-sports content in the bottom tier

Because we all know that subscription prices for premium services are high because of the silly money they spend on buying football rights. And I for one am fed up with subsidising football when I don't have any interest in football! Make the people who want to watch the football pay for the football; and let the rest of us just pay for the other sports!

Sure, the average income per subscriber will come down. But, I'm sure they would get a lot more subscribers doing it this way!

Put it like this: I know there are loads of motorbike racing fans who would love to watch the racing that is on BT Sport (MotoGP; the Red Bull Rookies Cup; the CEV; and the various Talent Cups), but don't because they can't justify the £20 to £30 per month subscription. If Discovery+ had a middle tier package for, say, £10 to £15 per month that included all that as well as the racing that is on British Eurosport (World Superbikes; British Superbikes; Motocross GP; Speedway GP; British Speedway), I'm sure they would jump at it!

When merging a basic service and a premium service into one service, the tricky part is deciding how to structure and price it. And I believe that the 3 tier model described here would get the balance right.

And I believe that the UK version of Viaplay will go down the same route if they decide to go for Premier League rights when they next come up in 2025. (And I am sure they will try to get some Premier League rights, given that they have the rights in other countries).

I don't doubt they will @CaroLiza_fan this week I got an email from the Finlandia Trophy livestreamers I bought coverage from 2 seasons ago, asking if I wanted to watch European Football Matches this week. I think they were charging 11.99 euros.

Just posted the British Eurosport schedule for Skate America in the sub-forum for the event, and thought I should post it here too.

In short, as usual for the North American events, there is nothing on the linear channels. Everything is on the Player.

Hope this helps

YES! I'm up for it!
Well I think I’d be nice to meet perhaps after the first day, after the practices? Perhaps for coffee or something and we can share our seat numbers and etc. I’ve not been to Sheffield before so I’ll have to look up the area!

We're travelling up from Cornwall by coach on the Thursday, because I'll still be in plaster, and we're staying a bit out of town (selected for an easy drive  ) but would be up for a meeting on any other day.

Oh no! I hope you’re not in to much discomfort. I bought my train tickets just before I bought a car, it was very silly of me!

Just came across this really great interview with LilahandLewis by Tatiana Flade, after they won Nebelhorn.

I'm so sad I can't be there at the Sheffield GP to cheer them on. :(
Those who are going, please cheer extra loud for those of us who can't go.:hap10::thank:

I see the ISU channel is using LilahandLewis image to promote the Skate Canada Rhythm Dance.

I heard someone say the videos aren't archived, so unless you watch live the videos won't play anymore. Is this the case for those watching via VPN?
Obviously many of the GPs aren't in our timezone, but with Eurosport Player you can watch anytime for a year or more afterwards. If this isn't the case with ISU, looks like I will have to renew my Eurosport subscription due in November. But Figure Skating is all I watch on it.

I use a VPN to watch the ISU YT channel and have easily accessed the broadcasts after they aired.

That's the Americans flapping about 🦚 Peacock.

The livestreams on the ISU YouTube channel are being archived. However, they are not creating videos of the individual programmes for all of the participants like they did for the Junior GP series. It is only selected skaters / partnerships that are getting that treatment.

Yes, you guessed it, Marilena is one of the ones that the ISU has not created individual videos for. And there's no chance of individual videos uploaded by other users lasting for long, because of Viaplay being so ruthless in slapping on copyright claims.

If that is November as in next month, one option may be to do like @DSQ and switch to a monthly subscription, as British Eurosport's contract to show the figure skating runs out at the end of this season.

If I remember correctly, the Monthly Pass was £6.99 (which is actually the same price as the equivalent package is on Discovery+). The last event that Eurosport normally shows, the World Team Trophy, is in the middle of April. So, depending on when exactly your subscription expires, that is either 5 or 6 months that would you need to subscribe for:

  • 5 months would work out at £34.95
  • 6 months would work out at £41.94

The Eurosport Player's Annual Pass is £39.99. (The equivalent package on Discovery+ is £59.99).

So, with being on Eurosport Player and with the number of months you would need, it would probably be easier to just let the Annual Pass renew automatically, and then cancel it after the season is over.

But, any fewer months, and it would be better switching to a Monthly Pass. If it is still available.

With us still being the Eurosport Player, it mightn't be possible to switch from the Annual Pass. I just went into my account, and clicked on "Manage Subscription". It takes you to a page that tells you all the details of what you are on, and there is a link at the bottom that says "Cancel Subscription". But I'm scared to click it to see if a page with more options appears, in case it doesn't ask you to confirm. Because, with 4 months still left on my subscription, I don't want to cancel just yet!

And that all is assuming that Eurosport Player survives until the end of the season. Because they might pull the plug on it before then.

I just did a search to see if I could find out if we had a date yet for when the Eurosport Player would be closing in the British Isles, and didn't have any joy. HOWEVER, I found a page about how it was done in Slovakia:

https://help.eurosport.com/hc/en-001/articles/5553179801489-Eurosport-Player-closure-Slovakia

Eurosport Player closed in Slovakia in July, but Discovery+ isn't available there yet. So what they are doing is directing subscribers to the main Eurosport website, and telling then that they can access all the content on there instead. I haven't visited the main Eurosport website for donkey's years, so I never even knew there were videos on there! But, I went to it there now and tried signing in with my Eurosport Player details and, lo and behold, it worked! And I was able to watch the content on there.

Of course, the difference is that Discovery+ is available in the British Isles. And they will no doubt want to get us transferred over to Discovery+, because they would be getting an extra £20 a year out of us. But, given the current economic situation, they might just leave this route available. I don't know.

Anyway, I hope this helps

The ISU never seems to create individual videos for the senior GP, they usually only do the top 3 in each segment (or sometimes top 5 for the championships). I wish they would add more individual videos, because if in the whole archived stream one performance has a copyright issue, the whole stream gets struck.

Same here. That is why I hate all day streams, because they hardly ever survive for the reasons you describe. At least if there is a separate stream for each segment, or even a new stream at each resurfacing, there is more chance of at least some of the coverage surviving.

But, the official channel cutting videos for each individual programme is definitely the best way of ensuring the programmes stay up. I do find it strange that it doesn't get done for the Senior GP's when it does get done for the Junior GP's. Because, let's face it, there are a LOT fewer participants in each Senior GP than there are at each Junior GP. Compared to the Juniors, it wouldn't take a lot of work to do it for the Seniors.

Ted and the Junior GP team have set the bar really high, and unfortunately nobody else can reach it. 😞

Apologies that this is so late. I decided to watch the Denis Ten Memorial the past couple of days, so didn’t get making this out until now.

The good news is that we do have LIVE coverage on British Eurosport's linear channels this week. The bad news is that it is only for the Ladies and the Dancers. Anything that extends past 11pm is not being shown LIVE on the linear channels. So, the Opening Ceremony, both Pairs segments, and both Men’s segments are only being shown LIVE on the Eurosport Player / Discovery+.

That said, there are highlights of the Pairs and the Men’s segments the following morning.

Don't worry, there will be more LIVE coverage on the linear channels for France.

Hope this helps

Holy Moly! A non Skating Commentator on Eurosport Player whose name escapes me. Alone! Not even Louise Walden beside him. Switched to VPN for ISU, Opera browser kept crashing. So went on YouTube as me and found Mark Hanretty and I'm not geoblocked!

ETA: Chris Howarth on TV Eurosport.......choices, choices!
