If she intends to take the year off she really only needs to be able to do two of them for this Campbell's competition. OTOH, if she's serious about defending her Nat title of course she'd need to go into full-time training once the season begins. I think jump issues is always something she'll struggle with throughout the rest of her career- if it's going to continue that is. She'll just have to get lucky one day if she wants to win a big event...either have that big (FS) performance or be the best of a mediocre bunch.

I noticed on the USFS site that Wakamatsu abd Fecteau have officially replaced Dube and Davison.

Mai Asada just came in 2nd at the Chubu regional right behind Yoshie Onda. Mai was 5 points behind Onda after SP with a stepped out on 2axel but came back strong and came in 1st in FS. Overall she was 2nd.

According to posters on Japan Skates, both Mai and Mao will do their new long programs at Campbell's. Mao's music is "Czardas" by Vittori Monti and Mai will portray the Black Swan from Swan Lake. Lori Nichol did both programs.

Well, Sasha did not embarrass herself and Mai Asada did just fine.

But Sasha's interview with Peter C. left little doubt that she is moving on.

Scott Smith turned in a creditable performance -- a new personal best. He looks to be the new Ryan Jahnke.

Meh. I miss Michelle like the Dickens.

I must agree with you MM- pretty blah for me. Nothing to get excited about, unfortunately. But of course this is the post-OLY season so that's to be expected. Not sure if I'll be watching this year.

I left my impressions on the thread in The Edge.

Sasha is saying that she is going for a 3rd Olympic try in 2010. She has to work extremely hard for gold there. Juggling work between skating and acting will not be easy.

I think it will ultimately be acting. I just didn't hear much enthusiasm from her when she talked about staying in for 2010, so I think a change of heart is in order.

Sasha

Perhaps so Red Dog,
But, I think that she MAY be taking the same approach as MK did after the 1998 and 2002 Olympics. I think that she'll be back, maybe not for this year, but, for next. She is registered for the US nationals for this year, so, we'll see if she actually turns up.

I think it will depend a lot on how she does in Hollywood.

Also- if she shows up at 07 nats and loses her title to Meissner (or someone else) it might discourage her...or it might motivate her to devote full time to skating.

It was also nice to see Mai for the first time skating. But everyone seemed to struggle one way or another with "early season-itis".

Just finished watching the ladies on TV. A few initial comments:

Missed Mai Asada, unfortunately, and Hughes.

Sasha looked better than I expected, actually, for this early in the season, where, by all accounts, she is not planning to seriously compete for some time. She was still the only lady there who had the presence that reached to the rafters.

Watching Mao Asada was definitely interesting. She has undoubtedly grown a lot since I last saw her. No longer the little pixie (in size) she once was, I thought she looked clearly as if she is still adjusting to her newfound height. Not surprising at all, but it is effecting her performance, not only of the jumps (which I think actually look like she will be on top of in no time), but also the artistic component. She looked a little like she was saying to herself occasionally, oh right, my legs are twice as long now. I don't know if it was just because it is so early in the season, but there was absolutley zero connection to her music happening so far. Very mechanical presentation.

The one I was most impressed with is Kimmie Meissner. I thought it was almost too bad that she won the world title last year, as she had not had time to develop artistically at all before the meteoric success. But I thought her program and movement this year is a huge step up in that direction. She doesn't quite have the confident presentation of it down yet, though I think part of that is that it's so early in the season, but great potential there for a breakthrough artistic year. The music and choreography is really great in her new program and delivers a much more polished, sophisticated style than her rather empty previous efforts. With a little more work in front of an audience, she can really sell this. I've seen her look off the ice, and I think a haircut so she doesn't always have to wear those really grandma (on her) looking buns would be a plus, but I know what it's like to be attached to your hair so.....
