Can Chan be on the top again?

Patrick seems really interested in bringing the emotion to his performances when he returns. While his programs in the past have been excellent and artistic, I've never really thought of him as bringing a lot of emotion to the ice. It'll be interesting to see how this approach pans out and if he's successful at that.

Um...did he watch Javier's Black Betty program? That is NOTHING like Chaplin! Or Yuzuru's Chopin Ballade?! It sounds like, using his words, he "skimmed"only the free skates. And it sounds like he only focused on the ones he considered his top competition. No mention of Denis Ten, who had two lovely programs (and had beat him in the FS at Worlds) or the rest of the men's field.

Well he said he didn't, he admitted he only skimmed through, those aren't their best performances so there's not much for someone like Patrick to be impressed with I guess? Yeah, that was the rub for me. How can you judge whether a skater's style, skill, etc, has changed based on a quick skim of ONE program?

Chan said he skimmed through the programs of World Championships gold medalist Javier Fernandez and silver medalist Yuzuru Hanyu on YouTube.

“That in itself says a lot, the fact that I skimmed through it,” said Chan, who won the 2011, 2012 and 2013 World Championships before being toppled by Hanyu at the Sochi Olympics. “It wasn’t because I dislike them. … I admire a lot of elements of their programs, it’s just that that’s what it is. I literally fast-forwarded to their jumps, their biggest jumps, and then that’s it. I stopped watching. … Their skating hasn’t changed. It doesn’t look like it’s any different. They’re skating to the same pieces of music style. Javi has that like a Charlie Chaplin style. It totally works for him. It’s great, but I’d like to see him do a classical piece.

“I found that the men’s event [for the whole season] was, as I expected, nothing too special, no offense. It was very exciting competition. Of course, technically, everyone did all the quads. We’ve had two, three seasons of these quads coming back into the men’s field, so that’s to be seen as to be expected now. I look to the skaters who are pushing the boundaries, program-wise.”

I hope Max Kovtun beats him with a terrible program and no transitions "no offence".
Also with his "leaving a mark for the coaches to show students what it takes to be a champion" he sounds megalomaniac.
And "i'll be deadly honest" but the fact he is a 3 time world champion with the way he skated in 2012 and 2013 is a joke. No offence.

Absolutely true. I admire every person who is able to reach such a great level as Worlds and Olympics. But...
But I think that maybe Denis Ten should get a gold in 2013(and I am not his big fan of Denis). And about 2012? I will never deal with the fact that Daisuke with his great performance, with amazing charisma and interpretations skills lost to Patrick.
And honestly I don't know why is everybody so crazy about Patrick, what is so special. I have never seen him live, just on TV, so maybe his SS are very good, but I don't see nothing absolutely nothing special about his interpretation. When I compare it to Daisuke(who is my No.1) and even when I compare him to some other skaters, it just seems he does what the choreographer told him to do. He tries to do some interpretation but I don't see charisma or musicality or anything. When I watch Daisuke I see that every move come from the inside, from heart and the way he feels the music, the way he can interpretate music is amazing. And I feel it the same with many others, but not with Patrick. I don't remember almost any of his programs, I think he just skates the same all the time and he can try how he wants. No matter how much he will be overrated by the judges.
But no offence(I kinda like this phrase).

Unfortunately our PChiddy hasn't been cured of his foot in mouth syndrome yet... I hope he will get his feet back on the ice instead and practice that 3A or another quad because if an injured Yuzuru can still give us some quality FS's (GPF/WTT) then having a healthy Yuzuru... who knows? People might not stand a chance.

I join you. I had the chance to see Worlds 2012 and what is stuck in my mind is the strength of Takahashi program, the interpretation of the music... Something I never found in Chan's program. At TEB 2013, I've been impressed by his SS, but once again, I wasn't moved, he had nothing "special". I see many people appreciating his skating, so I'm looking forward to seeing him in another style, as he's promising there...

Well as a fan I know Patrick is a good guy by heart but... sometimes I wish him to not say anything as much as I wish Yana (Plushy's wife) not to say anything about FS.

I am ok with skaters being honest and even critical of the competition (I am a Plushy fan after all), but it's his hypocrisy that really grates. He has absolutely no room to complain about other skaters not going clean. And to criticize their programs when he didn't even watch the whole thing? Nope...not interested in his opinion.

Hopefully Nam will overtake him & will become Skate Canada's new golden boy, the sooner the better...I prefer him to Patrick in every conceivable way.

The thing is that, even when he says pleasant things about the other top skaters, because of the way it is couched and framed by the comments about not being special etc, it comes across as completely condescending: "Well, they've tried haven't they, the poor little dears? *rueful sigh* Good thing I'll be back to show them how really to do it, eh?"

He's been that way for years; I seem to recall some questionable remarks around the 2010 Olympics. dissing Plushenko, etc.

I guess this is one of those situations where yes he is entitled to his opinion, but really couldn't he find a better way to say things?

Javier and Yuzuru had keep things so classy and with the one of the best sportsmanship, and even before never had read any of the two making negative of another skater that I don't get what or why Patrick keep thinking that this behavior is ok.
