I agree. Uncle Dick would argue that the leg (at least in this photo) isn't as away from the body as it needs to be and perhaps that there could be more arch in the back (but that could be because we're spoiled after watching Sasha, Angela and Sarah's arched backs).

This was photo taken thirty years ago before Sasha or Angela were thought of. It's a beautiful potition and nothing wrong with the leg position or the arch. It's a "text book" position. Karen skated in the 70's.

Peggy's layback would blow this out of the water.

Re: Check Out This Layback Spin

I didn't mean to start a "layback spin" war here. Each skater through the years have left their own mark on skating and should be appreciated as well as respected for what they contributed to the sport. Karen's trademark was her spiral as well her bauer move. I think it's great to be able to look at pictures of figure skaters over the years and see how far the sport has developed. It's certainly changed a lot from when I skated. Of course, Karen meant a lot to me, just as Michelle has become a symbol of greatness to those of this generation. I will always be proud of Karen's accomplishments and admire her great skating talents. She inspired me when I was a skater. I was simply trying to share some skating history with everyone here.

I have had the opportunity to see many great skaters over the years and appreciate every skater for their talents and contributions. I enjoy looking back over the years at skating and at the earlier champions. I even miss the days of figures! I am really from the old school of skating. So there you go.

Thanks for the pictures. I think each skater here has a lovely position and show their own style and flexibility. I did not find the picture of Janet Lynn.

Unfortuneately, the one of Janet is really weird, I don't know why they picked that one. Anyway, scroll down the list, past Tonia and Tara, and Janet is on the left.

Did anyone notice that next to Janet Lynne's picture it said "Olympic Gold Medalist"?

For the absolute last word in layback spins, click on THIS

Great arch, terrible leg position.

But it's definitely pretty high up there.

Who is that in the gold catsuit?

Probably the different angles and distance of the camera shots make the difference in why one looks better than another. :)

Talk about lay-back spins...

BTW- elingrace4eva, FYI, raising the free leg to hip height has never been a requirement for the lay-back spin. It is just the most common version that most skaters performs. The lowered free leg is another common variation which many have been doing, too. It's no where near "terrible" technically but if you are talking about its appearence, then you are certainly entitled to you opinion.

Yebin Mok has a pretty good layback too! I like the arms in this one from her Swan SP.

In fact, this is a nice topic, and I like to look at all these different laybacks from all these great skaters.

Thank you for that, I didn't realize...but I guess I was talking about my opinion anyway. I'll keep it in mind for the future, however.

I'll go along with LAD on this one. Karen's picture is the best.

But Yukina Ota is the prettiest girl I've sen since Michelle was that age.
