comments from non figure skating fans

most of the non figure skating fans I know don't make a lot of comments... they just ask me about different skaters in the magazines I have...

however, Erin, my best friend, is only interested in one part of skating.... "STUDZ" from SOI last year... or really anything John Zimmerman....

oh and she knows, basically, who's married, who's dating, etc

then there are the guys that think they're "hot and macho" by informing me that all skaters are gay... so yeah that's basically the extent of my knowledge of non figure skating fans...

My mother really likes Sasha but says Michelle and Irina have "It".
My boyfriend admires Yagudin for his atheleticism and seems to have a paternal interest in his success, he says "We watched him grow up on television".
He also admires Plushenko because he also has a torn miniscus. All this season he kept saying, "look what he's doing on that knee!" I think he felt his pain.
My favorite was the remark he made about L&A's Olympic free dance which I posted once and doesn't bear repeating. . .

I took a friend to see COI and she loved it. When Michelle was skating she said she skates from the heart. I almost fell off the seat. Dick speaking . She didnt see that in the other skaters but loved the show.

Several years ago they had a pro competition in Huntington, WV that I attended. It was the one that Tonya Harding skated in. I think the Tonya factor attracted more of the redneck factor than you usually see at FS events. Such a couple were seated behind my sister and me. Rory Flack, who rivals Sasha in flexibility was skating, and did a split jump directly in front of us. Redneck man said to redneck wife, "D*** honey if you could learn to do that I'd let you take skating lessons!".

My grandmother used to call me everytime an asian woman was on TV to tell me Michelle was on. We were watching the "Joy Luck Club" once and she drove me nuts every five minutes saying "How come Michelle's not in this"? My nephew calls male singles skaters gay but male pairs skaters he calls the luckiest and smartest men on earth.

i forget the exact quote, but my best friend called Bestemianova and Bukin's Olympic FD (the one where she popularized Besti Squats) "porn on ice"

I should start by saying that I used to make my parents take me to see Holiday on Ice when I was little. I don't think they cared for it much, but anyway . . . Now, my parents like ice dancing. They live in eastern KY not too far from Huntington, WV, so imagine some hicks sitting around watching that!

Great thread!
I don't watch FS with non-fans. They're too distracting. They try to talk to you while people are skating!

Some fs fans talk too much! In general, if I'm trying to watch tv, then I get aggravated if someone tries to talk to me. Why can't they wait until the commericials?!?! :rolleye:

This is a great thread! I actually made my mother go to Nationals with me this year. She is a fan....but a very casual one. I've tried to explain and show her the differences between the jumps, but I guess not everyone has our zeal for the sport. I did tell her to watch for Sasha's "beaver cleaver" spin. She couldn't believe that it had been labelled that....so every spin the poor girl would do my Mom would say, "That can't be the beaver cleaver"....and then finally she did it and my Mom was like "Oh! Now I see!". But, after Michelle had finished skating that beautiful performance of "Tosca" there was my Mom, raising her hands to the roof and crying like a baby. S&Z's "Turandot" from 03 Worlds made her cry too. So, I like to see that good skating can move other people to tears too...even if that person doesn't know a lutz from a loop and doesn't care to.

My Mom knows that if we are watching skating together there is no talking during the performances, especially if it is Michelle. I've almost got everyone else in my family trained as well....except my seven year old nephew!

Once my mom was watching Lucinda Ruh doing a marvelous spin; my mom reaction was "eso no puede ser verdad, tiene que ser un truco de camara". Traslation: That cant be real, it must be a special efect. My dad sometimes watch FS, he only waits the fall to start laughing.

I am very fortunate because all the members in my family really like figure skating, brothers included. Again I am fortunate that they see it as a sport and a very difficult one at that. It is the people (men) I worked with that are non-believers. I guess I find it my mission in life to convert them. I know I am wasting my time but it gives me a chance to get my digs in about football, basketball, hockey and golf. The guys I work with are all pretty young and still I think trying to find their manhood and the older ones well enough said on that subject. I told them I appreciate the European and Asian men because they are not afraid to wear frills or chiffon. It’s a costume and therefore designed to enhance their program. There response is yeah but it’s so girly. Now the fights on…..I inform them that their so called big men on the football field and their manly hockey players are all padded. Yeah like that’s real manly. My poor figure skaters fall and take their lumps and bruises without padding. I tell them about their training time and how they have to work out. Little my little it is so funny especially after a competition that they will say----oh by the way I saw some of that skating you like so much. One guy commented that his grandmother was staying with him over the weekend and wanted to watch skating. I thought yeah right. Anyhow, he said about Sasha C. …she’s beautiful, just like a porcelain doll and she really can skate good too. I could watch her all day.

I had told some of my co-workers that I would make a compilation of what I considered the best skates and we could watch it over lunch time. There are rules involved ……….no making fun of the skaters, no making fun of their coaches and no talking when Alexei is skating.
