Daisuke Takahashi

Special Question📢 to Daisuke Takahashi and Kazuki Tomono.

We asked them about what they've been into recently and how to enjoy figure skating for beginners, for those who haven't watched it yet!
We also asked them about the unexpected (?) thing they have in common. Also pay attention to their memories of their university life!

I think this is the bit that @synesthesia mentioned before about the house plants and joint interest in fashion/vintage clothes. I think it's so cute that Dai takes care of plants, and even takes them for a 'shower' ☺️ He's right that plants are very sensitive to the flow of energy, and they're also good for one's mental health. I'm hoping by now Kazuki got some house plants, too.

However! I must mention I retroactively worry about Dai skipping meals in order to buy clothes in university!!! He seems to throw himself completely into the things that he likes, that's admirable but I really hope he doesn't overdo it these days 😅

Dai's arms 🤯 I know that lifting someone requires amazing upper body strength, but like... wow!

I don't think he's skipping meals anymore. On the contrary - because he's been doing ice dance these past years he often talked about how he needs to eat well in order to build up his muscles (the result of which we can clearly see ;).) [Then again, most recently he said (in the "Colors" radio interview above) that it's been a challenge currently to achieve the right balance between a lean and a sufficiently muscular body since he's practicing both singles and ice dance elements these days.]

When he entered university before his biggest competitive successes he was living on a budget as he is from a modest financial background and the federational funding system, which is in place now, didn't exist back then (I think they provided financial aids, but not as extensively as in later years).

He should have a pretty decent income these days from his ice show appearances, sponsorship/endorsement deals (especially the ones with SkyCourt, Puma and Apex), pr activities and regular tv job on PokaPoka, so he shoud be able to provide for himself comfortably and most likely doesn't have to decide between buying meals and clothes anymore. :)

A few quick updates (I'll try to successively post all of the Dai updates that were skipped the past weeks over the next few days):

Dai is currently learning to do a backflip (I hoped he would give up on it, but apparently he really means it :drama:). These pictures were taken at his 2nd personal lesson with Shota Kamei from Blue Tokyo, who performed in Hyoen:

Last Thursday’s guest, actress Midori Utsumi, confessed that she’s a Dai fan 😊:

This week Dai won’t be on PokaPoka, because he’ll be instructing the junior skaters at the national training camp (25-27 July). Btw, I only realized later that the national senior training camp two weeks ago with Kurt Browning and Alissa Czisny as instructors was (partially) financed via the hometown tax system too and that donors were also able to attend one of the lessons of the camp as a benefit (two of the four plans were set up for the senior and the other two for the junior camp). (*Strangely* I didn’t see anyone criticizing Kurt and Alissa for being part of a tax funded training camp. ;))

The other day, I watched the skating of the training athletes live at the senior training camp that ended. The sound of the edges when turning curves and before and after jumps was overwhelming. On Saturday, July 27th, the [Junior Training Camp] will also be holding a special event exclusively for #HometownTaxDonors #TakahashiDaisuke will participate as an instructor only for the on-ice practice #IzumisanoCity

Thank you for the updates and for explaining Dai-chan financial situation back in the day, it's amazing he achieved so much success with so little financial support 🤯 I'm also glad that he is now most likely in a position where he can enjoy his hobbies without sacrificing anything else.

Haha glad I'm not the only one who noticed Dai has been doing an amazing job fitness-wise 💪 That's a good point about the balance between doing ice dance and singles, that makes it even more impressive!

There's already new news again 😅:

Yesterday Dai-chan had his first day of filming at the Piano Hall Avenue - a café with live jazz music in Kurashiki's historical Bikan quarter (scroll to the bottom to a short video of the shooting of the scene at the café ); his character is named "Midorio Furushiro":

Daisuke Takahashi begins filming for the film "The City of Warehouses" which is set in Kurashiki.

Filming for the film "The City of Warehouses" set in Kurashiki, began yesterday.

Today, figure skater Daisuke Takahashi, who is from Kurashiki City, began filming.

"The City of Warehouses" is a film about high school students struggling to launch fireworks from Mount Tsurugata in Kurashiki's scenic area.

Filming began in Kurashiki yesterday, the 21st, and today, the second day of filming, Daisuke Takahashi, a bronze medalist at the Vancouver Olympics and a professional figure skater from Kurashiki City, was on set.

Takahashi plays the role of "Midorio Furushiro", a museum curator who becomes a confidant for the main characters, and this is his first film appearance.
Filming took place at a cafe in Kurashiki's Bikan Historical Quarter, where he performed the scene in which the high school students spontaneously talk about setting off fireworks from Mount Tsurugata, alongside Maeno Tomoya, who is also from Kurashiki and plays the role of the cafe's owner.

Filming will continue in Kurashiki through August, with the movie aiming for a release date of July next year (2025).

Next February Dai will take part in the Ohme Marathon:

"With all my heartfelt wishes for everyone to reach the finish line safely," Daisuke Takahashi will be a starter at the Ohme Marathon, to be held on February 16th next year.
July 24, 2024 6:00 Sports Hochi # Sports # Athletics

Daisuke Takahashi will be the special starter for the 30km section of the Ohme Marathon (c) Sunao Ohmori (SECESSION)

The organizers of the 57th Ohme Marathon (sponsored by Hochi Shimbun and others) to be held on February 16th next year announced on the 23rd that Daisuke Takahashi (38), a bronze medalist in men's figure skating at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and also a star in ice dancing, will be the special starter for the 30km section.

Takahashi sent a message saying, "On the day, I will be a starter with all my heart and soul, hoping that all the runners will reach the finish line safely. There will also be a talk show, so I am looking forward to meeting everyone who is there to cheer us on!"

This fan gave some background information about the event:

https://x.com/1OxKokZxKoMTetp/status/1815876021390041285

The Ohme Marathon is not a "serious contest to decide who will represent Japan!" but a "citizen marathon."
There are two distances: 30km and 10km.
Famous runners come as guests in the 30km race, and the selling point of the race is "You can run with xyz athlete!"🏃
That's why they invite famous people as starters to liven things up 😄

Dai said in an interview that he'll be performing a new solo number at FOI (on one hand, it's great that he's working on a new program, but on the other hand, I'm a little sad he won't be revisiting "Flame to the moth"):

Professional skater Daisuke Takahashi performs a new solo number at an ice show in Shin-Yokohama

Culture & Science | Kanagawa Shimbun | Tuesday, July 23, 2024 05:00

"I drove to Hayama on New Year's Day two years ago and watched the first sunrise of the year. It was so beautiful," says Daisuke Takahashi.

The ice show "Friends on Ice 2024," produced by Japan's leading skater Shizuka Arakawa, will be held at the KOSÉ Shin-Yokohama Skate Center (Kohoku-ku, Yokohama) from August 30.

Arakawa, Mao Asada, Shoma Uno and other past medalists from the Winter Olympics and World Championships will be performing, captivating the audience with their brilliant performances.

Daisuke Takahashi, who turned professional skater last year, will perform a new solo number.

"The skaters that Arakawa invites are often the type who can impress," says Takahashi. From legendary skaters to young skaters who are still active, the world's best skaters from Japan and abroad will gather.

The highlight of the show will be the collaboration of skaters who usually skate solo in groups. Takahashi himself has not yet been told who he will be paired with, and says with a smile, "Even if it's someone I've skated with before, the way I react changes when the other members change. I'm looking forward to it."

Although he retired from competition in May last year, he is still paired with Kana Muramoto, who he trusts and says he can talk to her honestly. In this show, each skater is scheduled to perform a new solo piece, and Takahashi says, "It may be rarer for us to skate solo than as a couple."

In 2008, Takahashi suffered a serious injury in which he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, putting his competitive career in jeopardy. After a vigorous rehabilitation, he returned to the sport and won a bronze medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, Japan's first medal in men's singles. He also won the World Championships that same year.

"Not just in skating, but in any sport, even if you don't get results, what you've done is valuable. Just wanting to do it is enough," says Takahashi.

In 2014, he announced his retirement and became a professional skater, but in 2018 he returned to competition. In 2020, he took on a new path in ice dancing with Muramoto as his partner.

"Ice dancing has a completely different way of skating than singles. During practice, Kana-chan would ask me, 'Is there a problem?' But I had no idea what was right or wrong as an ice dancer, so I couldn't answer," he recalls.

Although he attracted a lot of attention, he wasn't impatient. "I had to complete each program and bring it to the competition. I was just thinking about doing that," he says.

After ending his competitive career, which was always marked by the judges' evaluations, he was able to objectively view ice shows as entertainment.

"Compared to before, there are fewer spectators. There are many ice shows, but we can't attract the audience unless we show change. If we are going to perform, we want to show something different from the others."

With this in mind, he has been working on new ice shows such as the "Hyoen" series, which combines figure skating with Japanese culture such as kabuki, the Tale of Genji, and Kenji Miyazawa's fairy tale "Night on the Galactic Railroad," and "Kassouya," which he planned himself.

He turned 38 this year and is looking to the future with a broad perspective.

"In the past, I thought I had to be a skater who could skate in many genres and do everything. Now, I want to accept that I can't do everything, and establish my own identity. I want to be an artist who is wanted without being stuck in my own ideas."

Friends on Ice 2024: August 30th to September 1st. Two performances per day, at 12:30pm and 5pm. Super Arena seats 26,000 yen (28,000 yen for the evening performance on September 1st) and more. Tickets are on sale at ePlus and other sites. For inquiries, please visit the F-Skating Net website.*

*all regular tickets are sold out now

I have to disagree with Dai - he is certainly one of the few skaters who can do practically anything, and not just in skating, but in many genres of performance!

On 24 June Jeremy Abbott announced on the official FOI ig account that he'll be collaborating with Dai-chan, Jason and Kao on a group number based on his "Exogenesis" program, so I guess the interview above was conducted a while ago since Dai said he didn't know who he'd be collaborating with yet:

(Insignificant side note: During the 2000s Muse used to be my favourite band, so I appreciate that Dai will skate to their music, but why on earth is everyone skating to "Exogenesis part 3"? 😅 (I know it was an iconic program for Jeremy and he was one of the first skaters to choose it, but I'm so tired of the song by now *sigh*.) The band has a huge catalogue of songs and quite a bit of skateable music, so I would love to see more adventurous choices!)

Once again syn thanks for all the Dai information, greatly appreciated.😘 I was hoping for a Dai and Mao collaboration
even if it is only a step sequence together across the ice. I am pretty sure the audience would love that.

This would be . I have a feeling that Mao might collaborate with Shizuka though (if Shoma didn't have his collab with Steph he would have been my first guess), because they’ve never performed together before.

This is what Shizuka jokingly said after being asked by journalist Akiko Tanaka for gendai media*, so who knows, maybe she'll find a way to have them perform together in some capacity 🤞:

Tanaka: Many fans would like to see a couple [of Mao and Dai] at this timing when they have both gained experience, but will it be realized in some way in this Friends?

Arakawa: "There are still many things that are not yet decided. However, if the two of them appear in all the group numbers, it will be possible (laughs)."

Takahashi: "It's impossible to do everything (laughs). On the other hand, this is Mao's first Friends, so why don't you do it all?"

Asada: "Eh (laughs)"

*Gendai media published a two-part candid “roundtable” conversation between Shizuka, Mao and Dai, which took place the same day as the interview posted above. (Very recommended read! :points: Also make sure to check out the photos accompanying the article 🥰):

Part 1: https://gendai.media/articles/-/134439

Part 2: https://gendai.media/articles/-/134440

Partial machine translation of part 1 (I love how Shizuka roasted Dai for always flubbing his thank you-speeches/greetings at the end of his shows :ROFLMAO:):

A miracle collaboration between Shizuka Arakawa, Daisuke Takahashi, and Mao Asada. "I thought “No way!!"”

Friends on Ice Roundtable, Part 1

Part 1: "Shizuka Arakawa, Daisuke Takahashi, Mao Asada. An honest conversation between the three legends"

Author
Akiko Tanaka

The shocking news that Mao Asada will be making her first appearance on Friends on Ice, produced by Shizuka Arakawa, was announced on July 12th. Prior to that, an interview with the three skating legends, Shizuka Arakawa, Daisuke Takahashi, and Mao Asada, was held in Tokyo in July. We introduced a special part of the recording of the special program hosted by announcer Yurika Mita**, who has been covering the figure skating scene for a long time, but on this day we also had a special interview with writer Akiko Tanaka for FRaU.

As skaters living in the same era, the three are now professional skaters, but are also involved in ice shows as producers, pursuing their possibilities. They talked about their feelings for each other and their feelings about skating, with a fun and lively atmosphere. In the first part, they will talk about the truth behind Mao's recent news and their thoughts on each other's shows and activities.

[…]

Overcoming the crisis...

This interview took place about a month after all three had finished their major performances. Daisuke Takahashi sang and acted in the lead role in the new ice entertainment ‘Hyoen 2024 – The Miracle of the Cross’ at Yokohama Arena, in which skating and different fields of entertainment compete with each other. Ms Arakawa also appeared in the production and showed a unique presence as a villain.

Mao Asada held ‘Everlasting33’, which is meant to be an eternal love story in a new format, this time titled a theatre-style ice show. Instead of a skating rink, the ice was put on the stage of a theatre called Tachikawa Stage Garden, where she skated through the largest number of 12 performances as the star of the show, in a two-hour comprehensive production accompanied by a live orchestra. How do their respective successes look in each other's eyes?

‘Hyoen 2024 - The Miracle of the Cross’, which Daisuke Takahashi chaired, was a success despite overcoming a crisis when the director and the second musical actor stepped down less than a month before the performance.

Takahashi: ‘It's true that there were a lot of difficulties this time, but on the other hand, I think it's because of those difficulties that we were all able to move forward in the same direction. My role this time was that of an altruistic person, and although there were some difficult parts, I felt that it was worthwhile, and there were parts where I felt I still had a long way to go, so it was fun. I also felt that I still need to grow a bit more.’

Arakawa: ‘In “Hyoen”, it is like I am assigned to play the villain (laughs). Although my part was short, I was given scenes that moved people's hearts, and while doing them I kept wondering how I should play the role, but I couldn't decide on the answer. How can I fulfil my role in the work, ‘Hyoen’ always gives me an opportunity to think about that. I find it interesting that everyone plays a different role, and I'm part of one of the pieces.’

[…]

More than 100 shows per year...

After her retirement, Mao Asada held the "Mao Asada Thanks Tour" which took place from May 2018 to April 2021, covering 202 performances in 50 locations across the country over a total of three years, and her subsequent "BEYOND" tour included 103 performances in 25 locations across the country in one year. She formed a dedicated team with skaters selected through auditions and led an unprecedented ice show tour around Japan.

Arakawa: "I think it's a special thing to have an ice show that tours all over the country, not to mention the number of times it's been held, and as a skater I'm envious of it. Moreover, as the leader of the troupe, she leads a wonderful show, and Mao herself continues to evolve. I was really surprised when I visited her at "Everlasting33" the other day. Even though I knew she was a wonderful skater and had evolved further as a professional, I was drawn in by her charm and evolution beyond my imagination. It was good that I approached Mao-chan this time for ‘Friends’, but I wondered if it would be okay to skate with her.”

Takahashi: "I understand how you feel. Mao is really amazing. She's so energetic. 'Everlasting33' was also very inspiring, but since I returned to the sport and went to America, it was a long time since I was able to see Mao's show in person, so when I went to 'Beyond', I was surprised at how much she had added to her repertoire. I was surprised at how much her range of expression had expanded, and I was also surprised at how many minutes she was on the ice (laughs). It was really amazing to see her skating so energetically all the time. I think of Mao as a comrade, but at the same time, I also think of her as a rival, so it was really inspiring to see how she creates shows like this."

Asada: "I was so happy that both of them came to see me despite their busy schedules. I feel like it just naturally happened that we were able to hold the show on tour. I've recently been thinking that maybe it was fate, including being able to create a rink named after me, "MAO RINK," in Tachikawa.

But I'm always so busy producing shows, so I think it's really amazing that Shizuka has been doing "Friends on Ice" every year for 18 years. She's married and has children, so it's like she's transcended that. She still has her skills and is a great senior in the skating world, leading the way, so I want to keep up with her, and I feel like I'm doing what I can now.

Dai-chan is Dai-chan, and he's created a new ice show that's never been seen before. It's really amazing that he’s pioneering the genre. I think it's something only Dai-chan can do. Recently, everyone is working hard on various shows even after retirement. Shizuka-san's "Friends" was the first, and then Dai-chan's "Hyoen" and "Kassouya", the anime "One Piece", with (Uno) Shoma as the leader, Yuzu-kun's solo show, and other things like dinner shows, and there are a lot of exciting things. I also get power from everyone, and I'm really happy to see everyone's success. "

Takahashi: "I'm a newbie when it comes to show direction, so I think it's even more true that to continue for a long time, you need a lot of ideas. I'm sure Arakawa-san had times when she couldn't come up with ideas during her long run, and even at those times she had to force herself to come up with one. If you don't see a lot of different things, you'll run out of ideas. When I think about it, I wonder how Arakawa-san manages to spend her time with her children (laughs).

Also, every year when Ms Arakawa's show is over, I see a lot of people in the audience saying with a smile that they had a lot of fun! I think that is simply amazing. Mao is Mao, and I think she has a lot of difficulties in putting on a show with her own world view. Watching the show, I can see that there is something in it that she never wants to break. I think it's wonderful that, in addition to the strength of the show, it's really interesting to watch."

[…]

Takahashi: "I went with Muramoto Kana-chan the day after Hyoen finished, and it was really inspiring. The sense of depth of the stage was amazing. The rink they built for the stage is actually quite small, isn't it?’

Asada: ‘Yes. It's smaller than the sub-rink in Funabashi.’

Takahashi: ‘And yet the way it was presented gave the illusion of being either wide or narrow, which was really interesting.

Arakawa: ‘They used the entire rink on the stage.’

Asada: ‘At first it was difficult for everyone to go to the side that extended out into the audience, and we ended up using the space too narrowly, so we didn't get the best out of the skating.’

Takahashi: "It's scary to fall."

Arakawa: "If you're scared, you can't go to the edge."

Asada: "That's right. At first, I was too scared to go to the edge of the stage.

There were members of the orchestra below, and there was also the audience, so if I fell, it would be an accident. We had to do it all over again and again, practising with instructions to go this way and that way. We had a lot of trouble figuring out how to use the stage."

Arakawa: "But it didn't feel cramped at all. It was full of space."

Takahashi: "You don't feel the three-dimensional depth on a regular rink, so it was really refreshing. It showed the dynamism and power of skating on the stage of a theater."

Asada: "I was nervous. Until we did it. We said we would do it in this place, but the ice is narrow on the stage alone, and even if we extended it, it's narrower than a normal sub-rink. I wondered if we could do it, so it was actually like a gamble."

Her aerial, which she performed without a lifeline at a height of five metres above the ground, also attracted attention. Ms Asada said she had been practising for months.

Asada: “I wanted people to see it as a form of expression. I have no regrets because I was able to try many new things in ‘Everlasting33’.”

[…]

“When reading the script, I was embarrassed about the lines in the love scenes.”

The first production of "Hyoen", in which Takahashi Daisuke serves as the leader and Arakawa Shizuka also appears, was a fusion of kabuki and the second was a musical version of the Tale of Genji. The third production, "Hyoen 2024 – The Miracle of the Cross", which took place this June, was an ice musical based on Miyazawa Kenji's "Night on the Galactic Railroad".

Asada: "I couldn't go this time because it overlapped with "Everlasting33", but I went to see the first and second productions of "Hyoen". The first time, Shizuka came down from the ceiling and did a kind of aerial and it was really wonderful, and Dai-chan skated the first time, and the second time, in addition to skating, he sang and acted, which really surprised me.’

Arakawa: ‘Dai-chan had a lot of singing and dialogue this time. Dai-chan has perfect lines. I think it's really amazing. The worst thing about Dai-chan is his greeting at the end of the performance (laughs). I can't believe he's the same person he was when he was performing.’

Asada: ‘I wonder if he changes/flips switches.’

Arakawa: "Shouldn't you think about what you're going to say in your greeting beforehand?"

Takahashi: "I always think about it... But maybe I get a little too relaxed after the performance, because I mess up a lot."

Arakawa: "I'm really surprised that you give that performance in the actual show, even though you’re that kind of character."

Takahashi: "I’m surprised myself, but I've never messed up my lines. Oh, but the other day I skipped one line and said it first (laughs)."

Arakawa: "Since skaters don't have experience in normal theater, they didn't understand the stage where everyone gathers together to read their lines before the performance, right? Dai-chan started from there, and his transformation was amazing."

Takahashi: " During the reading, at first I was embarrassed about the lines in the love scenes. I read them monotone. Even my ears were red (laughs)."

Asada: "That's right. You're creating all kinds of new paths for us, Dai-chan."

Takahashi: "This time, there were young skaters, who had lines and songs, and they were really good. (Tomono) Kazuki and (Shimada) Koshiro had a ton of lines and songs, but they were so much better than when I did it for the first time, I thought, “wow” (laughs)."

Asada: "Isn't that because they have Dai-chan as a role model? How do you remember lines?"

Takahashi: "I don't really know, but it's easier to remember when there's movement. If I don't know where the scene is going to be and what I'm going to do, I can't get into the lines at all, but if I know what I'm going to do, I can get into it easily."

Asada: "I'm likely to forget things quickly."

Takahashi: "It's a conversation, so if I know the previous person's lines, I don't forget them. But sometimes I skipped ahead! (laughs)."

Arakawa: "Dai-chan is also appearing in a movie set in Kurashiki soon."

Asada: "Wow, that's amazing."

Takahashi: "Yes. I was asked to work on the movie "Connecting Movies: The City of Warehouses," and we'll start filming in July, so I'm looking forward to it.”

Partial machine translation of part 2:

Part 2: "The three legends Shizuka Arakawa, Daisuke Takahashi, and Mao Asada talk about the details of their "miraculous collaboration""

In this second part, writer Akiko Tanaka interviews Mao Asada, Daisuke Takahashi and Shizuka Arakawa (pictured from left to right) on the rare occasion that they came together. She asked them about the background to their collaboration in Friends on Ice 2024 and their thoughts on each other's shows, and an enjoyable conversation, sometimes filled with laughter, ensued. In the second part, we ask them about their respective activities, their long time at the forefront of skating and their thoughts on skating.

Daisuke and Mao's memories of performing together.

Shizuka Arakawa and Daisuke Takahashi have performed together in many shows, such as "Hyoen" and "Friends on Ice". And Mao Asada and Daisuke Takahashi have performed together in many shows in the past, especially when they were still active. In the Christmas on Ice event held in the winter of 2014, they even performed a program as a couple.

They also appeared together in "Denis Ten and Friends 2014" produced by Denis Ten in Kazakhstan, and "Ice Legends" produced by Stephane Lambiel in Geneva, Switzerland in 2016. The two were inspired by the unique show. During a conversation on a television program in Switzerland, Takahashi, who was in his first period of retirement, asked Mao, who was still an active skater, "If I were to do a show with a story, would you participate?" in a conversation about the future, to which Mao readily replied, "Of course I would." I wonder if Takahashi has asked Mao to participate since then.

Takahashi: ‘I wonder if there hasn't been one since then’

Asada: ‘I don't think so (laughs)’

Takahashi: "If I asked you now, would you say yes (laughs)?"

Asada: "Since then, Dai-chan has returned to active competition, and I retired and started the Thank You Tour, and then we did "BEYOND"... so the timing just never really matched up. We've both gotten a lot older, so we can't do "Romeo and Juliet" like we discussed back then (laughs). We both still have shows and are busy, so it's kind of hard to say."

Takahashi: "Yeah. It's hard to say (laughs)."

Arakawa: ‘It's very common for skaters to give up without saying so.’

Memories of the first lift together

Takahashi:
"When we skated together in Christmas on Ice, we were still in singles, so it was hard to lift Mao (laughs)."

Asada: "That's right. At that time, Dai's hands were shaking during practice, and I thought, 'Oh no, I can't trust him!' (laughs)."

Takahashi: "Compared to then, I'm more stable now."

Asada: "That was my first time doing a lift."

Takahashi: "It was my first time doing it too (laughs)."

Arakawa: "Since then, Dai-chan has been trying ice dance with Kana Muramoto, and Mao-chan has also performed a pairs program with Ryo Shibata in a show, so if they skate together next time, it will be different from before."

Asada: "I'm just a pseudo pair skater though."

Takahashi: "Well, I don't know if I can actually do it (laughs), but after that, I've only lifted Kana-chan. Oh, the other day, in the Hyoen scene, I lifted (Shimada) Koshiro a little too, didn't I? I think I could lift Mao more than Koshiro (laughs).”

Many fans would like to see a couple at this timing when they have both gained experience, but will it be realized in some way in this Friends?

Arakawa: "There are still many things that are not yet decided. However, if the two of them appear in all the group numbers, it will be possible (laughs)."

Takahashi: "It's impossible to do everything (laughs). On the other hand, this is Mao's first Friends, so why don't you do it all?"

Asada: "Eh (laughs)"

Problems with producing or starring in a show

All three of them have experience as show producers and stars. So, what was the most difficult thing they've experienced in the past?

Arakawa: "There are all kinds of little things."

Takahashi: "For me, it was when the members of "Kassouya" were sick and couldn't perform one by one. It was especially tough for the two main actors. We had a training camp in February when it was cold and colds were rampant, so it was difficult to manage our health and there are many things I regret."

Arakawa: "That was an accident, right?"

Takahashi: "Everyone was trying so hard. It was sad and tough that they couldn't perform. It's the hardest when a cast member can't perform, but there's nothing you can do about it. You just have to do it."

Asada: ‘If it was just one person, it would still be fine, but two?’

Takahashi: ‘Three people. No, from the first time we made substitutions, it would be four.’

Asada: ‘Eh, that's tough. Even in my show, one of us got injured and was only able to perform for a little while at the end, and then we got Covid. "BEYOND" was held during the Covid pandemic, so there were a lot of postponements and cancellations. But even if one member is missing, the performance will come, so we have no choice but to do it. It depends on the situation at the time.’

Arakawa: “I think the good thing about ice shows is that everyone can make up for each other in the end, no matter what happens. In a competition, if a person can't make it, that's the end of it, but in an ice show, if a member is missing, you can say ‘I'll go!”

Asada: "It's best if that never happens, but I'd like to try being a pinch hitter."

Arakawa: "I've been a pinch hitter a few times."

Asada and Takahashi: "Eh?"

Arakawa: "I was a pinch hitter for Shoma in 'Fantasy on Ice.' One time, Shoma forgot his costume, and when he went to get it, it was too late for the performance, so I was supposed to skate in the second part, but we changed it to the first part and had Shoma skate in the second part."

Takahashi: ‘I didn't know there was such a thing.’

Arakawa: "That's fine. I'll skate first (laughs)."

Asada: “You're so focused.”

Arakawa: "You can't leave a gap there."

Asada: “In competitions, the competitors meet each other at the opening ceremony, and then meet again at the closing ceremony, and that's it. But in an ice show, everyone helps each other to grow. Moreover, this year's Friends is a really special space that we will create together with rare members, so I'm really looking forward to a completely different time from when I was an athlete.”

Meaning of actions leading to future skaters.

Just before this interview, the recording of the programme, which will be distributed from 16 August, was taking place. Listening to the story, one senses that ‘the actions of the three skaters lead to the development of the younger skaters’. Arakawa-san talked in detail about her group numbers with an awareness of the development of younger skaters, Mao-san talked about her team tour of ice shows with a team of professional junior skaters, Takahashi-san talked about his ‘Kassouya’ where he trains young active skaters he scouts himself to create a place for them to skate, and so on. ....... How are they aware of ‘for the sake of the younger generation’?

Takahashi: "It's also to create a place for myself. The main focus of what I do is not just for my juniors. I love performing through skating, so I thought about what I could do to ensure that there would be a place for me to do so. I would be happy if it would lead to something for my juniors, but it's not just that.”

Asada: "I didn't start out with that intention either. Before I knew it, I was creating a place for junior skaters to skate and people were telling me that I was training them. But I think I can continue to do that in the future. I want to be involved in skating for the rest of my life, including having a rink named after me, and give back to skating."

Arakawa: “The reason why I am conscious of young skaters in Friends is probably because I myself didn't know about ice shows when I was a child. The underlying reason is that if I had known about them from a younger age, it would have been one of the motivations for me to skate.

I myself only realized the appeal of shows when I was over 20 years old, but at the time, I thought that if I wanted to do a show, I had to do it overseas. I didn't have the idea of making one myself, and I didn't think I could do it. I think that if I had known about the appeal of the shows before, I might have been more motivated to compete. So I thought it would be nice if I could do what I can and use it to motivate someone. As Dai-chan often says, that's not the main purpose, but I hope it will connect to the next generation."

They are comrades who fought in the same era.

Throughout the video, the three of them were chatting in a very friendly atmosphere, and looked like they were having a great time. It was clear that they were excited to be skating together. Listening to their messages to each other once again, I felt their deep respect for each other, and the bond that comes from being active in the same era was brought to light once again.

Asada: "Dai-chan and I have been comrades and friends who have been competing in the same era since we were kids at the Nobeyama training camp. I also think that he has created many new genres of ice shows since he retired, so we both feel that we should continue to do what we can and create new things.

Shizuka-san is a senior in the skating world that I have been watching since I was a child. I still see her contributing to figure skating for a long time even after giving birth to her children, so I want to do what I can to follow in her footsteps."

Takahashi: "Their skating is unique. Arakawa-san says that she is running out of time to skate, but I think she still has a lot more to skate, and Mao-chan is following in Arakawa-san's footsteps (laughs), so she still has a lot more to skate. I would like to see both of you in your own worldviews for a long time, so I will do my best not to lose to you! I hope we can inspire each other, skate together and do all sorts of things.”

Arakawa: "After watching Mao's show, I thought there was no other skating entertainer who pursues the 'limit' to this extent in the extraordinary space of skating. Because it's a job that you can't do for a long time, I want her to pursue what she can now, but take care of her health. I want her to pursue it as a big presence that attracts many people and gives them healing and power.

Dai-chan is not only attractive in skating, but he is also someone who has tried various entertainment such as acting, singing, and movies, and is not limited to the skating world. Seeing Dai-chan's challenge, the younger generation thinks that skaters can do such things. He is also a messenger who conveys such possibilities. So I want Dai-chan to continue to challenge himself and expand beyond genres. But I think the place where he is most confident is the skating rink, so please keep that as your main focus! Two wonderful skaters. Please continue to show us your performances."

I'm learning about the appeal and awesomeness of skating from people in different fields.

Finally, we asked Takahashi about the charm of skating that he feels again.

Takahashi: "I want to perform various things in the entertainment world that I love, with skating as the core. With that in mind, I've recently been able to interact with people from different fields, and that's why I've had more opportunities to hear people say that skating is amazing, such as the sense of speed and expression. Surprisingly, you don't realise how fascinating and amazing skating is if you do it yourself."

Asada: "That's true."

Takahashi: "Right now, I feel like I'm being taught the charm of skating by people from various industries. I feel that I still don't understand skating well enough to be able to say that easily when people ask me what the appeal of skating is. That's why I think that the more we work with people from various genres, the more we will discover the charms of skating that we don't know about, and I think that skating is full of charms that we haven't noticed yet, so I want to keep searching for them."

Arakawa: "Entertainment itself is an extraordinary space, but skating has a more fantastical world. The appeal of ice shows is not about competing with each other, but about creating and expanding your worldview together. For the viewers, it is also a place to recharge their energy and healing power, and I hope it will be a place to sublimate the appeal of skating.”

Asada: “I have spent all my life skating with skaters, who are all wonderful expressive people. I'm really happy to be able to be here and skate with such wonderful skaters as Shizuka-san and Dai-chan, not only when I was an athlete, but also now that I'm a professional skater.”

This week Dai won’t be on PokaPoka, because he’ll be instructing the junior skaters at the national training camp (25-27 July).

There are lots of fan/audience reports from yesterday's practice sessions at the junior national training camp. Seeing the amount of reports, it almost seems like Dai fans single-handedly financed the junior camp this year with their tax donations.

Here are a few fairly thorough reports :

https://x.com/yukod1sk8/status/1817370260179227049

I went to check out the junior training camp at Kansai Airport Ice Arena!
Instructor Takahashi Daisuke's instruction, which was supposed to start in the evening, started with the first group at noon, and it was truly a luxurious experience.
He gave passionate instruction to the athletes he was asked to teach. The time was divided up and the players were taught in turn, with some songs thrown in for good measure. It was a really valuable experience ❗

https://x.com/openchannel_D/status/1817149279703806239

Daisuke, the instructor at the Kansai Airport Junior Training Camp, was supposed to start at 4pm but was on the rink from 12pm onwards, teaching nonstop. It was such a fulfilling time that I wondered if the 20,000 yen hometown tax donation was worth enough. Thanks to the students who worked hard not only in practice but also filling in the gaps on the rink, and to Daisuke-sensei for his hard work!
Daisuke looked around the rink with serious eyes, and when he found a point he wanted to pay attention to, he would dance the choreography on the spot with his mouth a little agape, so it was very easy to tell that "he wants to go to that student now".
His guidance was focused on expression, not elements, and he always made sure that he and the coaches were on the same page. Daisuke's guidance was like magic, as he conveyed the nuances, which are difficult to convey, accurately while acting them out himself, and with a little advice, the program came alive and shone with colour.
The Daisuke class from 16:00 was basically the same as the one we had in Niigata. Free leg and full body posture when doing basic movements of turns and steps. They are assigned one variation of movement after another and they continue to go back and forth on the long until the time is up.
None of this is like a game-style application that kids can easily pick up on, but it's a playful way of doing this.
The children who can practice alone are going to be able to grow a lot.
Today, they were practising a combination of cross rolls and cross overs, and also the combination with twizzles, keeping the free leg beautifully long and pushing the ice powerfully from there, all the while changing hands and changing items (?).
Ice push! Push! I've learned the hard way that it's not that easy to push when you're told to do so...
The coach who repeatedly asks you to ‘calculate’ the trajectory and placement of your foot to get to that point.
The junior students applauded the coach's example. The time passed in a strict but friendly manner.
Then, Daisuke suddenly casts a spell like "Sharp! Push! Sharp! Ha...! Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh..."
It seems like he's saying out loud the image of the movement, and saying something like "When you can adjust the speed by yourself, that will become an expression" and I thought wow...
This guy seems like he would do that without being taught.
Before the 4pm practice, Daisuke was doing his own warm-up on the ice...Everyone was just admiring him without making a fuss, but the depth of his edges caused sighs from the people around him. ✨
He did a big grind with a step in between a cross roll, a big circle on one foot from a twizzle, and various other advanced versions of the patterns he used in the lesson, which were amazing.

https://x.com/Noriden3/status/1817092468334268692

He taught Shimada Mao's choreography very carefully, and I watched as her little gestures became more and more beautiful with Daisuke's magic.
I wonder what it is. The way he changes speed, moves smoothly and stops perfectly. It's really unique and I'm fascinated by how he stops or holds [his movements].
And he watched each one carefully, moving slowly up and down and back and forth in time with the skating, with a serious look in his eyes, like a conductor.
He had amazing concentration, and his aura was overflowing at the side of the rink.
Daisuke, who is coaching, is so wonderful that I want to watch him forever.
But I want him to act too. I want to see various sides of Daisuke
When Daisuke is coaching, I get the impression that he talks a lot and communicates well. I can't hear his voice, though. He communicates with his body language, expressions, and all his heart and soul.
Keiji just passed behind me and I was freaked out.
I was so freaked out that all I could say was hello.
And Satsuki-chan is right next to me, so thank you for showing me something good.
I'm so touched to be able to communicate.
If there is a skater whose movements catches his eye, he raises his hand and beckons them to come over.
Even that gesture makes my heart race. Then he stares at the skater's face, talks to them, and then immediately does the example. Isn't it amazing that he can grasp the skater's movements at a glance and tell them what kind of movement they should make?
Finished. It was a very intense time.
It was a luxury to see Daisuke warming up alone on a beautiful rink with fresh ice.
Did he do it for more than 10 minutes? I enjoyed his skating in dance shoes.
I thought he was practicing a lot of twizzles, but he was teaching the skaters how to twizzle from various turns.
A turn from a twizzle? I think he said he had a request to teach the free leg when twizzling.
I was happy to see all kinds of twizzles.
It's strange because when I watch Daisuke's movements, I feel like I can skate too. Maybe it's because he does even the complicated movements clearly and carefully.
He keeps his lower body in the most beautiful position possible, and he carves a deep edge precisely, which I didn't understand at first, but once you get used to it, you can understand the rules of how to make it look beautiful. I thought to myself, ‘I can't do that, so I have to build a body that can do it’.
Daisuke himself stumbled, saying that he couldn't do the opposite, pretending to be soft [as a coach] as usual, but he was as tough as ever.
But it was fun and I was happy to see that everyone was getting better and better.
Did Rio-kun pump his fist in the air when Daisuke praised him for being good?
Daisuke-san twizzles beautifully and the skaters spontaneously applauded.
I know, it's beautiful when it's really clean.
It was impressive to see the other coaches happily observing such a scene. I hope you can see it somewhere as the cameras were following closely.

https://x.com/Noriden3/status/1817140082081763811

I already bought one [referring to the Team Japan banner], but Nakamura Shunsuke said he wanted me to buy one, so I bought another one. I'll buy it as a souvenir.
I hope it will be a source of nourishment for the athletes.

It was also noted that Dai-chan brushed up a lot of programs that were choreographed by Kana-chan (she created many programs for the juniors over the past months, as reported in the KanaDai fan fest):

Figure skating All Japan Junior Training Camp: Daisuke Takahashi as instructor, Shimada Mao says to fellow Paris table tennis representative Miwa Harimoto, "I want them to finish with a smile"

July 28, 2024 (Sun) 20:49
Sports

The All Japan Junior Figure Skating Training Camp was opened to the public on the 27th at the Kansai Airport Ice Arena in Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture.

Following the senior training camp on the 6th of this month, this training camp was also held with spectators. The next generation of Japanese figure skaters participated, including Mao Shimada (15, Kinoshita Group), who won all the junior competitions she participated in last season, including the World Junior Championships and Youth Olympics; Rena Uezono (14, LYS Inkarami), who has made remarkable progress, coming in third in the World Junior Championships last season and fourth in the Senior All Japan Championships; and Rio Nakata (15, TOKIO Inkarami), who has declared that he will ‘win all junior competitions’ this season, and others who will lead the next generation of Japanese figure skaters. Shimada, Uezono and Nakata also participated in the senior training camp on 6 July.

The skaters were divided into three groups and each did track and field training and practiced to music on the ice (60 minutes).

The track and field training consisted of stretching and core training to improve facial expression performance through correct body use and awareness of good posture. After each event, the participants performed a rotational jump on the spot to check their performance, and wrote down the points they were aware of and noticed on a sheet.

Daisuke Takahashi (38), the first Japanese man to win a bronze medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, was invited to the training camp as an instructor.

During the on-ice practice, he carefully instructed each skater on how to use their free leg (the leg not on the ice). The skaters who received instructions from the legend of Japanese skating were all excited about their step up, saying, "I used parts of my body that I had never paid attention to before."

In the final overall practice session, Takahashi gave the players 60 minutes of ‘simple exercises’. The smiles gradually faded from the faces of the skaters as Mr Takahashi instructed them on the basics of skating, such as not leaning forward and raising the free leg in basic movements like ‘push’ and ‘cross roll’, paying close attention to physical details. Takahashi also taught them how to create "sharpness" and "softness" in skating by using their breath, a technique unique to the skater who has captivated the world.

Shimada Mao also talked about Miwa Harimoto (16), who is a member of the Japanese women's table tennis team at the Paris Olympics. Shimada and Harimoto belong to the same Kinoshita Group, and at the end of last year they held a talk event together. Shimada sent her own words of encouragement to the Olympian, who is in the same year as her, saying, "I don't know much about table tennis, but I hope she will perform to the best of her ability and finish with a smile on her face." The junior training camp was held from July 25th to 28th.

Dai-chan’s comment (click on the picture to start the video) 😊:

We asked Daisuke Takahashi, who was a special lecturer at this year's All Japan Junior Training Camp, about his thoughts. 😊

A belated 3-page World Figure Skating Web report about the Ovision Ice Arena 1st Anniversary event on 18 May (page 2 contains an interview with Dai):

https://worldfigureskating-web.jp/news/7480/

Comments about Dai from his kouhais, who participated in the event with him (from page 3 of the report):

Yuhana Yokoi

14 years ago, in 2010, Daisuke Takahashi appeared at the Ice Show in Nagoya. I was a flower/bouquet skater, and it was Daisuke Takahashi who held my hand and skated around the rink with me. At that time, he was like a person on a cloud, and he still is now, but I once again felt that it was wonderful that he did these skating classes and approached us.

Maria Egawa

Before I was involved with "Kassouya", I thought that I probably wouldn't be involved with him, even after he retired. To me he was really a person on TV, but I'm involved with him in this way. I think that all aspects of his skating are amazing when I see him live, but now that I've actually been involved with him, he talks to me more casually than anyone else, and I feel that there are many things about him that I respect about his inner self. I once again realized that I want to be a skater like that.

Shunya Matsuoka

I first worked with Daisuke on "Kassouya", and even during that time Daisuke practiced more than anyone else, without sleeping. He showed us how to do it. Even when we met like this, he would talk to us in a friendly way and give us advice. I admire him. I want to follow in his footsteps forever.

Sena Miyake

I've always looked up to him and followed his footsteps, and even now I get nervous when I meet him. (laughs) This is true outside of skating too, but I admire his expressiveness, his charm and the radiance he exudes when he's on skates, and I hope I can become that kind of person someday. That part never fades, and even after he retired, I feel like his radiance is only getting stronger and stronger, so he's someone I'll always look up to.

Kazuki Tomono

I've always admired him. Not only his skating, but even though he appears in various ice shows, he also willingly participates in local skating classes and other events that anyone can join. It made me think that I would like to become a bigger presence in the skating world and contribute in the same way as Dai-chan.

Keiji Tanaka

I have admired him since he was an active skater, and although he has retired from competition, I think his ability to attract people in the show world is truly amazing. I feel his unifying power in many places, both from the audience and from the members of "Kassouya," and I'm sure everyone has experienced it.

Last one for today (well, probably for a couple of days, unless there are major news again 😅).

An informative article / interview with Kikonojo Onoe about the production of Hyoen 2024 was published on 13 July. Onoe himself is a very accomplished, interesting person, who is active as a choreographer, director and performer in many fields such as kabuki, Japanese dance and various forms of traditional Japanese theatre (including the Takarazuka Revue) - in other words, all the genres that have been fused with figure skating in Hyoen at various points:

Machine translation:

This special edition of "Kikunojo Diary - Listening to Good Things" will bring you a performance report on the ice show "Hyoen 2024 - The Miracle of the Cross" (held at Yokohama Arena for four days from June 8th to 11th), which Kikunojo directed and Takahashi Daisuke starred in. We will also report on the rehearsal two days before the show, which we were given special permission to see.

Hyoen 2024
Not only professional and active skaters, but also actors, comedians, singers and other various talents gathered. "Yuzu" appeared in the finale, and the excitement in the venue reached its climax. ©Hyoen2024

Kikunojo gives rapid-fire instructions from the production booth.

"Tokio, please come out a little further west. Kakeru, please link in at that timing."

"Once you've confirmed that Daisuke is on the board, please start moving the panel screen."

Kikunojo's voice, sitting in the production booth in the middle of the auditorium, echoes through the microphone in the Yokohama Arena, which has been transformed into an ice rink.

The story is "The Miracle of the Cross Star," inspired by Kenji Miyazawa's "Night on the Galactic Railroad." Kakeru is a young mineralogist played by Daisuke Takahashi, and his best friend, astrophysicist Tokio, is played by actor Takuro Ohno.

Not only the costumes, but also the lighting, sound, and digital images that flow in the background of the stage are all production-ready. With two days until the opening day, rehearsals are in full swing.

"Hyoen" is an ice show series starring Daisuke Takahashi that began in 2017. Kikunojo has participated as a choreographer from the beginning. We at the editorial department were looking forward to hearing that he would be participating again this year as a choreographer initially.

We were really surprised when it was suddenly decided and announced in early May that he would also be in charge of directing. At that time, it was already just a month before the opening. Since then, he has been holding meetings every night, sometimes until the morning, to prepare.

From April to May, Kikunojo's schedule was full and he was so busy that he couldn't even hold meetings for this series. That's no surprise. In April, he was in charge of directing and choreographing "Kamogawa Odori" in Pontocho, followed by "Azuma Odori" in Shinbashi in May.

Kikunojo was also busy running from east to west, preparing for events such as "Kyogen" and the "Japanese Dance Evening" held at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (FCCJ) and "Itseikai", which was introduced in the previous Kikunojo Diary: Listening to Good Things. Watching him rehearse, I was impressed by his determination to weather and break through the stormy times.

Kikunojo has directed and choreographed many performances, so I asked him if it was different to be in charge of directing an ice show at the Yokohama Arena, not a theater...

"The space is large, and the lighting system and video are complicated, but I don't really feel that there is much difference between directing a dance show. There are many similarities in the way we think about staging, rehearsal progress, singing, acting, and how to please the audience. I've been involved in the ice show "Hyoen" since its first performance, and this is my fourth time I'm involved in it, including "LUXE", so I have a lot of experience."

In a complete change from his usual kimono, sitting in the production booth, Kikunojo wears a staff sweatshirt with the "Hyouen" logo and black pants. His unusual outfit looks fresh.

"The background image is a little too raw, so please make it a little rougher."

"The spots on the left and right are too bright, so please dim them a little."

Kikunojo gives rapid and precise instructions. Following his instructions, the stage gradually takes shape.

Due to schedule and venue restrictions, today, two days before the opening day, is the first rehearsal at the Yokohama Arena. Even so, because they have been practicing and rehearsing intensively at the training camp and at the Shin-Yokohama skating rink, the movements of the main actor Takahashi, the other performers, and the staff are so smooth that it is hard to believe that the rehearsal at the arena is the opening day.

With Miyamoto Kenji, who is in charge of choreography. "Kenji's mother is actually a Natori of the Onoe school. Hearing that made me feel closer to him," said Kikunojo.

Today's rehearsal was a run-through, so to speak. It started with the opening, and we spent about three hours following the flow, carefully checking the timing of the "entrance", the position on the stage, the lighting, etc., took a 30-minute break, and then spent another three hours following the flow of the next scene. It was a very hard day.

The 30-minute break began. Even though it was a break, some of the performers were still on the ice, checking the feel of their jumps and their positions. Kikunojo left the production booth and headed for the stage. He put on his skates in the usual way and started skating towards the performers on the ice. His skating was so smooth. It must have been the result of his strong core muscles trained through dancing.

"During a full rehearsal like today, I don't go on the ice much, but I spent most of the time before entering the arena practicing with the performers and choreographers on the rink wearing my skates. I've done it many times, so I'm getting used to skating a little. Of course, I'm using my own skates."

After a brief exchange with the performers, Kikunojo returned to the production booth with light movements. The next rehearsal was about to begin.

"I think we're about at the top." When I asked him when the rehearsal would end, Kikunojo replied with a laugh. "The top" meant midnight. There were still nearly eight hours to go. It is only through these rigorous rehearsals that the stage becomes more polished.

The story of "Ice Fantasy 2024 - The Miracle of the Cross Star" revolves around Kakeru, Tokio, and Kakeru's childhood friend Yuki. Yuki is played by Muramoto Kana. She is like a comrade who has paired with Takahashi Daisuke and achieved brilliant results in ice dancing and created memorable programs.

Other top skaters who are currently active in the field include Arakawa Shizuka, who won a gold medal at the Turin Olympics, Tomono Kazuki, and Shimada Koshiro. Many actors also appear. In addition, "Yuzu", who wrote the theme song, will perform at the end, making it a very luxurious stage.

I saw the performance on the third day. The stage, which has a strong musical element, progresses at a good tempo. The highlight were the skating scenes. Starting with Daisuke Takahashi, the skaters freely run across the ice, perform spins, and sometimes jump high, which is a powerful performance that cannot be experienced on other stages. In addition, the scene where Takahashi and Muramoto dance are truly a world-class ice dance pair. The entire venue is enveloped in an elegant atmosphere.

As the story progresses, Kakeru and Tokio visit several stars floating in the galaxy. Various characters welcome the two on those stars. Among them are kid skaters. In the scene where about 30 performers, including adult ensemble members, spread out on the ice in cute costumes and skated and danced, the entire venue seems to have turned into a flower garden.

Daisuke Takahashi was on stage almost the entire time. He often stopped to speak after showing off his splendid skating. What surprised me was the scene where he sang solo. His lustrous voice reverberated throughout the arena, and the audience was captivated.

When the two members of "Yuzu" appeared at the end, the arena was transformed into a live concert venue. After the theme song "Jujisei", they performed the familiar "Niji" and "Beautiful". When Kitagawa Yujin and Takahashi moved to the front of the stage and sang passionately, the audience was thrilled.

Kikunosuke, who watched the first day of the performance, also had tears in his eyes...
The stage, which lasted more than two and a half hours, ended in an instant. It didn't feel long at all. The various images projected on the multi-screen at the back of the stage, using the latest digital technology, were also very beautiful and impressive.

The applause for all the performers who repeatedly circled the rectangular rink that served as the stage never stopped. This show brought together a variety of talents, including not only professional and active skaters, but also actors, comedians, dancers, and singers.

I was surprised to learn that it was Japanese dancer Onoe Kikunojo who coordinated the performances of such a diverse group of performers, and I felt the great potential of Japanese dance and traditional performing arts.

This performance would not have been possible without the courage of all the performers, including Takahashi Daisuke, to step out of their own territory and take on new challenges. Watching the large number of performers smiling and circling the rink many times, the sense of accomplishment and joy of each of them was conveyed to the audience.

Even Kikunojo himself, who is very familiar with the content, had tears welling up in his eyes when he saw the actual performance on the first day of "Hyoen 2024". I can't wait for the next production, which will surely be even more powerful and evolved. I'm sure that's what many spectators were hoping for as they left the Yokohama Arena.

Last but not least, I uploaded the extended BTS footage and the alternate footage of Dai's/Kakeru's character photo shoot from yesterday's re-edited Hyoen broadcast.

Kakeru character photo shoot:

Extended BTS special:

Imo the re-edited version of the show is excellent! The choice of camera angles is better than in the live broadcast in several scenes (the scenes that were already ideally captured in the live broadcast were left untouched), so that all of the important facial expressions and nuances are perfectly conveyed. (If anyone is interested in the complete re-edited version, please send a pm. :))

Here is a sample from the re-edited version of Dai-chan singing "I will protect you" followed by his duet with Kana-chan (I'll take the video down after a few days):

The next re-brodcast is scheduled for 31 August (on Nitteleplus again).

Thank you for all the updates, @synesthesia :love2:
The conversation between Dai, Mao and Shizuka was so fun and interesting. They seem to be really good friends! I hope Dai gets to lift Mao again lol

I also loved the reports about the junior training camp! Sounds like it was amazing! I'm sure the junior skaters and the fans were super happy. I actually saw a tweet from a fan who attended Dai's lesson, and then went to the Figure Skating Festival in Osaka, and they said they were able to see that Kazuki was doing the same basics that Dai had taught on the day before, that's pretty sweet.

and wow that Hyoen footage! So amazing! 🤩 Thank you so much for sharing!

That’s lovely – thanks for sharing! :giggle: I saw several Dai fans reporting on both events, but didn’t read that Kazuki and Dai taught the same basics. Maybe these were pretty standard skating skill exercises that had constantly been drilled into both of them from when they were young?

Akiko and Shizuka were last Thursday’s PokaPoka guests! The theme of the show was “The (secret) behind the scenes of the figure skating world! Interview with legends Shizuka Arakawa, Akiko Suzuki and Daisuke Takahashi” – so this time Dai was not only a regular, but more or less treated like a third guest. The full episode:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pTBCZyy70LN-1srbGy-BbJ586eQ4fz37/view?usp=sharing

A few clips:

At the end of the first clip they were asked what nicknames they call each other. (Dai answered “Shi-chan” and “Akko-chan”; Akiko answered “Shi-chan” and “Dai-chan” and Shizuka said she calls them “Akko” and “Dai-chan”.) Akiko and Dai said that they’ve known each other since middle school. The photo was taken at the JGP in Nagano (which they both won) when they were 15 and 16 years old (this was the season Dai became junior world champion, right before he switched to seniors at 16).

In the third clip, Akiko retold the well-known story of when she, Dai, Mao, Nobu, Kanako, Taka K. and Takahito (“the golden generation” as they were referred to) were on holiday together in Okinawa after the Olympic Games in Sochi. She told a funny episode about how they all rode a banana boat and Dai sat in the back and fell off without anyone noticing. Dai said that this was the first time he thought he was going to die, because they went so far away that he could no longer see them and they simply didn't turn round to collect him. Poor Dai-chan! 😅

They also rented a rink in Okinawa for a couple of hours, so the still active members of the group had the opportunity to practice while on vacation. (Do elite athletes ever truly relax? 😵)

They also talked about the average cost of figure skating gear, coaching and costumes. Shizuka said that the further she progressed in her sport, the more expensive it became (makes sense, I suppose), which she didn’t realize when she started out. (She also said that when she started, figure skating was still a minor sport [in Japan].) According to Shizuka, these are the approximate costs:

Shoes: 30,000 yen

Blades: 130,000 yen

Costumes: 30,000 – 70,000 yen

Coaching (the maximum amount Shizuka had to spend – she was coached by Tatiana Tarasova at the time): 500,000 yen per month 😲 (she also said that sometimes coaches used to take the amount of prize money their students earned in a certain period of time into consideration and charge them accordingly.)

Shizuka has been using her current blades for 7 years, but changes her shoes every few months.

Astonishing to me was that she washes her costumes in the washing machine (according to her they’re basically just an enhanced swimsuit 😅)!

Part of the profit from the sale of the plates Dai designed for SkyCourt was donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society as a support fund for the Noto Peninsula Earthquake (the same cause part of PIW's proceeds and of the cast’s earnings from their appearances at the shows in Yokohama and Shiga earlier this year went to) - the plates were also produced in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture to support the local economy:

We are pleased to announce that we have sold a "Kutani ware 2-piece small plate set" designed by Daisuke Takahashi at the SKYCOURT Official Shop and donated a portion of the proceeds to the Japanese Red Cross Society as a support fund for the Noto Peninsula Earthquake of 2024.
While we were searching for pottery producing areas across the country to express pop designs on Japanese tableware, the Noto Peninsula earthquake occurred.
In light of this situation, we wondered if there was anything we could do...
Together with Daisuke Takahashi, we consulted the traditional Kutaniyaki potteries in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and they kindly agreed to produce the pottery for us. We hope that our contribution will be of some help to the recovery effort, even if it is only a small one.
We sincerely pray for the safety of all those affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on Monday, January 1, 2024, and all those working on rescue and life-saving activities, and for the speedy recovery of the affected areas.

"Yuzu’s" new album, including the titlesong “Jyujisei“ they wrote for Hyoen, was released this week – the full song was uploaded on the band's official youtube account:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=_VePmis0xF-X966c&v=PfwdKSXu5xo&feature=youtu.be

Comment about/review of “Jyujisei“ on kkbox (source: https://www.kkbox.com/jp/ja/column/reviews-0-258-1.html)

This song was written as the theme song for the ice show "Hyoen 2024 - Miracle of the Cross Star", starring Daisuke Takahashi. The song is about the bond between people, with a cross star as the motif. It seems like the stars are always shining nearby, but in fact they are tens of thousands of light years away. The expression "If you reach out your hand, you'll almost reach them, but if you chase after them, why do they move away again?" is very sad. Eventually, the song develops to find hope in the fact that no matter how far apart we are, we can still look up at the same starry sky, and the strong yet expansive singing voices of Kitagawa and Iwasawa leave a positive impression. Please listen to this song while remembering the people you care about even though they are far away, and friends you have not been able to contact.

I have decided to withdraw from the Kinoshita Trophy figure skating tournament.

I was injured the day before the selection tournament, and since then I have been working hard at DOI and the All Japan Junior Training Camp, but I have decided to take this opportunity to fully recover and prepare for the JGP.

However, I am not depressed because I was able to be coached by Takahashi Daisuke, someone I have always admired.

I am very excited and will continue to work hard on my treatment and rehabilitation.

Ayumi Shibayama and Tomoki Kimura formed a new ice dance team. Tomoki converted from singles recently, inspired by Dai-chan – when he was on ice partner search, prior to teaming up with Ayumi, he wrote the following in his profile :

https://x.com/colfulplusD/status/1747451659046035879

I was inspired by Daisuke Takahashi, an Olympic medalist as a singles skater and a world competitor as an ice dancer, and began ice dancing last summer. While still competing at the Nationals as a singles skater, I have experienced skating with a partner, and learned ice dance patterns, dance lifts and spins.

It's nice to see the Japanese ice dance field expanding again!

Haha it was more like, Kazuki was doing in practice what Dai had been teaching the day before. The way I see it, it's more there's an alignment between them not only in terms of sensibility and vision, but in the skating itself.

It's no secret to anyone that Dai has excellent basics - his programmes were iconic not only due to his sublime performance quality, but also a huge amount of skill (not to mention he was able to switch to ice dance later).

Kazuki, who grew up watching and admiring Dai, understands this and over the past few years, and especially since Kassouya, has been doing a lot of work on his basics. He wants to express himself skilfully like Dai-chan ☺️ In fact, some fans said they can see Dai's influence in Kazuki's new SP Tshegue, in the sense that it has a lot of interesting dancing moves and requires good skill and good body control.

I think your observations are spot on!

The basics of all Japanese skaters are extremely strong and in my opinion among the very best in the world in the singles disciplines, while each has their own area in which they particularly excel. As you indicated, what sets Dai apart is his inherent dance-ability, full body control and his ability to interpret nuances in the music with his footwork like a floor dancer (one of my favourite examples of this is his footwork in the 2nd step sequence of his "Eye" SP).

I have long believed that Kazuki has all of these qualities to a pretty similar degree and is the closest to Dai (not just among Japanese skaters) in terms of on-ice dance ability, expressiveness and versatility. 😊

However, despite these similarities, I think that Kazuki has developed his own distinctive style, especially through his work with Misha, and that the comparisons in relation to Kazuki's new SP don’t only stem from Dai's influence on Kazuki's style, but from the fact that Shae-Lynn has choreographed programs with pretty similar vibes and movement vocabulary with "Makeba" for KanaDai and "Tshegue" for Kazuki. I saw that you wrote in Kazuki's fanfest that he will also be wearing a flashy African-inspired costume, so there will be another similarity in that aspect.

I am very excited to see how Kazuki's SP will evolve over the course of the season - especially since it's already so strong!

Dai-chan on set with director Emiko Hiramatsu:

Machine translation of the Sanyo News article:

"I'll use the expressiveness I've developed through my sporting experience" - Takahashi Daisuke at the press conference for "The City of Warehouses"

Former world champion figure skater and Kurashiki native Daisuke Takahashi (38), who will appear in the film "The City of Warehouses" which is set in Kurashiki City, held a press conference in Kurashiki City on the 5th. Takahashi, who is currently taking part in location shoots in his hometown, said of his enthusiasm for his first film role, "I want to use the expressiveness I've developed in my competitive career to help liven up the film."

Filming has been taking place in the Bikan Historical Quarter since late July, and Takahashi said with a look of satisfaction, "It's all new to me, so I'm a bit confused, but I'm enjoying the tension on set."

The film, which is scheduled for release in July 2025, depicts high school students who rush to set off fireworks from Mount Tsurugata in the Bikan Historical Quarter to encourage their friend who is a young carer. Takahashi will play Kojo Rokuro, a curator at a local art museum who becomes a confidant to the protagonist.

He received an offer to appear in the film from film director Emiko Hiramatsu (57), who is originally from the city, in November last year. Six months before that, he had announced his retirement and said: “The timing was right for me to try various things and broaden my horizons. The film is set in my hometown, and I'll never get another chance like this."

A legend who was called an artist on ice. While he is aware of the difficulty of expressing himself through facial expressions and tone of voice, he said, "It's the same as figure skating in that you have to convey the image inside you to others. My experience has been a plus." The film also stars actors with ties to Okayama, such as Megumi and Tomoya Maeno, and he said it’s "a heartwarming film. I hope many people will see it."

Machine translation of the OHK article:

From the ice to the silver screen... Figure skater Daisuke Takahashi makes his acting debut in a film set in his hometown of Kurashiki [Okayama]

The film "The City of Warehouses" is set in Kurashiki and is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2025. Figure skater Daisuke Takahashi, who will be making his acting debut in this film, held a press conference on August 5th and talked about his thoughts on acting.

(Daisuke Takahashi)

"To be honest, when I received the offer, I was worried about what I should do and whether I could do it, but I'm 100% excited and 100% nervous about what kind of film my first job will turn out to be."

The film " The City of Warehouses" starring figure skater Daisuke Takahashi from Kurashiki City, tells the story of a high school student's struggle to fulfill a promise to "set off fireworks in Kurashiki's Bikan Historical Quarter," and was planned by an executive committee made up of local volunteers.

The screenplay and direction are by Emiko Hiramatsu, a Kurashiki native who served as assistant director under director Yoji Yamada. The lead roles are played by Soma Santoki and Runa Nakajima, who are garnering attention as the next breakout actors. Veteran actors such as Hashizume Isao will also appear.

"We'll have Takahashi Daisuke!"

Takahashi plays the role of a curator at the Ohara Museum of Art. Filming began on July 23rd at coffee shops in the city and other locations. This is Takahashi's debut as an actor. He had this to say about his first film appearance:

(Takahashi Daisuke)

"It's my first time appearing in a film set in my hometown, so I feel like it's a great connection, and I think it's going to be a film that I'll remember for the rest of my life. (Acting) doesn't involve much physical movement, and you express yourself through small facial expressions and tone of voice, so that's completely different (from figure skating). I think the experience of communicating with people is something I gained from figure skating, so I hope it's been an advantage."

When asked about his future acting career:
"I feel it's rewarding and interesting, so if there's a chance, I'd like to do it again if I can."

(Takahashi Daisuke)

Takahashi's debut as an actor in the film "The City of Warehouses" will be shot in Kurashiki until August 11th, and is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2025.

Machine translation of the Kyodo article:

Daisuke Takahashi makes his first film appearance: "A once-in-a-lifetime chance"

2024/08/05

Former world champion figure skater Daisuke Takahashi (38), who will make his first film appearance in "The City of Warehouses," set in Kurashiki, Okayama, held a press conference in the city on the 5th and expressed his aspirations, saying, "I accepted the offer because I thought this would never happen again. I want many people to see it." Takahashi is a native of the city.

The film is directed and written by Emiko Hiramatsu, who has served as assistant director to director Yoji Yamada for many years, and is scheduled to be released nationwide in August 2025.

When he received the offer from the director in November last year, he was initially hesitant, but said, "Many of the actors in the film are from Kurashiki, and the film is set in Kurashiki. I was worried about whether I could do it, but I thought, 'I have to do it.'" He talked about what made him decide to appear in the film.

The director was inspired by the fireworks that were set off all over the country to cheer people up during the COVID-19 pandemic. Takahashi plays Furushiro Midorio/Riro, an art museum curator who is consulted by the protagonist, a high school student who is busy setting off fireworks in the film. Takahashi said, "The role is also difficult because I am a key person, but it is a wonderful experience. I have cultivated my experience in communicating to people, so I hope it will be an advantage."

Some additional information about the movie from the nikkansports article:

[…]

Director Hiramatsu was inspired to write the script for " The City of Warehouses" after a childhood friend of her set off a surprise fireworks display for children in Kurashiki who had been deprived of the events they were looking forward to during the COVID-19 pandemic. The director's classmates and acquaintances formed an executive committee and spent two years raising sponsorship funds, but they were unable to raise enough money. At one point, she tried to give up on the production, but she couldn't give up and filmed a pilot episode and released it on YouTube, which led to the film being selected for Kurashiki's corporate hometown tax donation program for the first time.

[…]

◆A high school boy named Aoi Namba (Soma Santoki), who lives in Kurashiki, a town with warehouses, happens upon the brother of his childhood friend, high school girl Beniko Shirakami (Runa Nakajima), climbing a large tree at a shrine and causing a commotion. Beniko's brother (Kazuki Horie) has autism spectrum disorder and is making a fuss after seeing phantom fireworks. Aoi calmed the situation by saying, "I'll set off real fireworks for you, so come down!", but Beniko was angry and in tears, far from being grateful. Aoi was shocked when Beniko, whom he had a secret crush on, told him, "He’s my brother who has autism and you made up a promise you can’t keep. He never forgets promises, so he gets hurt every day." He tries to keep his promise and set off the fireworks, but he doesn’t know what to do. In fact, "fireworks" have a special meaning for Beniko. As Aoi begins to struggle for them, Beniko's hardened heart gradually opens up. His jokes become serious, and his seriousness leads to bitter failures, and he rises again in the midst of the failures. The people around Ao and his friends gradually notice how hard they are working, but... will the fireworks really go off in this town?

The film will be premiered in Kurashiki City in March 2025, and will be released nationwide in the summer of the same year.

Dai is featured in the 45th edition of GQ Japan’s “Cars” series / column, titled “History of my beloved car” 🤩:

https://www.instagram.com/p/C-U6-MLtDop/

As the title suggests, the two part article revolves around Dai’s favourite car(s). To be more specific the first part deals with cars, which he himself owned – his first car, a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado that he bought at 25 and a Lexus LX, he acquired at 31, which he sold when he and Kana moved to Florida. (This settles the question about Dai’s financial situation after winning the OBM and Worlds as these are expensive upper segment cars, especially the Lexus LX.) The second part presents 3 cars that match Dai's preferences and he gets to have a close look at. I have a feeling his next car is going to be a Range Rover. *lol*

Nevermind the cars though, the real highlight here are the photos of Dai-chan himself, imho. 🥰 I kinda dig the fashion he is modeling too – haute couture that doesn’t feel like a costume, but is very “him” and authentic to Dai’s actual fashion style. (the brand he's wearing is Yohji Yamamoto, which he already modeled in a photo shoot for Locari a couple of years ago https://static.locari.jp/29/page2/ / https://static.locari.jp/29/page1/index.html).

History of my beloved Car──Vol. 45. Daisuke Takahashi (Part 1)

When you see someone's car, you can see their life. This is the 45th installment of a series where we ask people about the hidden stories behind their cars. In the first installment, figure skater Daisuke Takahashi met his first car in his life for the first time in a long time.

By Takeshi Sato
August 5, 2024

I just want to drive a big car!

Figure skater Daisuke Takahashi won the World Junior Championships in 2002 at the age of 16. Therefore, at this point in time, he was a busy top athlete. It was difficult for him to find time to attend driving school like his peers.

"I'm from Kurashiki, Okayama, so when I turned 18, everyone got their driver's license. My brothers and cousins all had theirs. I started going to a practice facility in Osaka when I was in the second year of junior high school, and when I entered university, I started living in Osaka. There are many places where it's easier to go to skating practice facilities by car, so when I was 18, I wanted to drive myself. But I was busy, and people around me told me to reduce the risk of accidents and focus on my sport, so I gave up on getting a license. But I really wanted to get a license."

Takahashi sits in the driver's seat of his old car, which he used to drive for the first time in a while. Takahashi says that he has only ever driven SUVs.

From here, Takahashi began to stand out as a figure skater. He participated in the 2006 Turin Olympics, and won a bronze medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics at the age of 23. It was a remarkable achievement, as he was not only the first Japanese, but also the first Asian to win a medal in men's singles figure skating at the Olympics.

At the World Championships held after the Vancouver Olympics, he won the championship, and rose to the top of the world in both name and reality. However, even at this point, Takahashi had not yet obtained a driver's license.

"I had always wanted to travel by car, but in the United States, where I was based, voluntary insurance is expensive until the age of 25. Even renting a car is expensive. After the Vancouver Olympics, when I turned 25, I thought it might be time to get a driver's license. I had more opportunities to go to the United States for trips, and you can't live there without a car."

While attending driving school, Takahashi thought about his first car. He said that he just wanted to drive a big car.

"I thought Toyota's Vanguard was cool. Also, my older brother used to drive a Toyota Hilux Surf, which was also good. I wanted to own a Land Cruiser, but I thought the Prado was a bit too expensive. But I held off until I was 25, so I thought I might as well go for it."

The Toyota Vanguard is a medium-class luxury SUV that was introduced in August 2007. It is the successor to the Harrier, which was transferred to Lexus dealerships, and the Kluger, which was discontinued.

Looking back on this, Takahashi said, "My Prado's body color was also black," as he approached the vehicle used for the shoot.

"Because the body was black, I wanted the interior to be a different color, so I chose beige leather. Looking at this car, the joy I felt on the day the Prado was delivered comes back to me. I drove it to and from university for no reason, going out in the Prado for everything, practising on the ring road of the Metropolitan Expressway, which I was not good at, with a friend riding beside me. Come to think of it, the parking lot I had a contract for was narrow, and I had to turn around five or six times to park. Thanks to that, I got better at backing into a parking spot, and I no longer have trouble with narrow roads."

The fourth-generation model that Takahashi purchased was released in September 2009. This was an opportunity to merge it with the "Hilux Surf," which had been using the same chassis since May 1996.

The fourth generation was only available as the long wheelbase (2790mm) model for the domestic market, while the short wheelbase model was continued for overseas markets.

Takahashi was 25 years old, so it's been about 12 years. The Land Cruiser Prado underwent a full model change in 2009 and evolved into the fourth generation, so this is the Prado of this generation.

In fact, Takahashi said that when he won a medal at the Vancouver Olympics, retirement crossed his mind.

The fourth generation follows the previous model in terms of mechanical aspects such as the suspension, including the 4-cylinder 2.7-liter and 4-liter V6 engines. New features include crawl control, which makes off-road driving easier at extremely low speeds, and multi-terrain select, a driving assistance system that improves off-road driving performance.

The interior is more comfortable than the previous model.

The interior is equipped with a sliding mechanism that expands the foot space in the second seat and a walk-in mechanism on the passenger side that improves access to the third row. In addition, the third seat adopts an electric floor storage mechanism that can be stored and returned with the flip of a switch, and the foot space has been lowered by 50 mm, improving livability and convenience.

"I didn't feel like I needed to continue, but I could continue. But I started driving my Prado to practice, and I went overseas by myself for choreography, and when I got to the airport, I drove a rental car, and somehow I stopped thinking about quitting figure skating. I like the private space of a car, so I spend my time thinking or listening to music while I'm driving. Sometimes I just play some music to find something I'll use. I don't mind driving long distances, and I've even gone back from Tokyo to Osaka. The Prado is full of memories."

He ended up driving his favorite Prado for about six years.

The name of the car, Land Cruiser, is a combination of the English words "Land" and "Cruiser," meaning "cruiser on land." Prado means "plain" in Portuguese.

"I thought it might be a good idea to drive one of my favorite cars while I still can. However, I couldn't imagine myself driving a foreign car, so in the end, the only cars left were the Land Cruiser 200 and the Lexus LX. So, I gave myself a push and chose the black LX, thinking that this might be my last chance to drive one."

Thus, 31-year-old Takahashi began driving the first-generation Lexus LX in Japan. When asked if he felt a sense of achievement or pride, he laughed: "It might be the last time I get to drive such a luxury car, so I thought I would enjoy it".

The previous LX was introduced in Japan in 2015. Since its launch in North America in 1996 as Lexus' first SUV, the LX has expanded sales overseas, mainly in North America and the Middle East.

The previous LX's V8 5.7-liter engine achieved a wide torque band that generated approximately 90% of its maximum torque from 2000 rpm. Combined with the super intelligent 8-speed automatic (8 Super ECT), it demonstrated smooth acceleration on the road and powerful power at low and medium speeds off the road.

The interior is functional, while highlighting the contrast between different materials such as metal, leather, and real wood. The horizontal instrument panel makes it easy to grasp the vehicle's posture, ensuring the basic performance of a full-fledged SUV.

"The Prado was more maneuverable, but the LX had a solid weight and a sense of solidity. I'm glad I had it. However, since my ice dancing coach, who I switched to in 2019, was in the US, I decided to move to the US in January 2020. I would be living there for at least 2-3 years, so I got rid of my LX. But then COVID started and my plans to go to the US fell through... I no longer have the LX, but I needed to get around in Japan for now, so I asked them to find me a car I could drive right away, and that's why I chose my current car. So I want to be picky about my next car."

So, in the second part, next time, we'll have the cars that Takahashi is interested in and ask him to think about his next car.

Daisuke Takahashi

Born in Okayama Prefecture in 1986. Won the World Junior Championships in 2002. Won the bronze medal at the Vancouver Olympics and the World Championships in 2010. Won the Grand Prix Final in 2012 (all firsts for Japanese men). He represented Japan at three consecutive Olympics: the 2006 Turin Olympics, the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and the 2014 Sochi Olympics. He competed in the World Championships in two events, men's singles and ice dancing, before retiring in 2023. He currently performs as a professional skater and also produces the ice show "Kassouya."

Part 2:

History of my beloved Car──Vol. 45. Daisuke Takahashi (Part 2)

When you see someone's car, you can see their life. This is the 45th installment of a series where we ask people about the hidden stories behind their cars. In Part 2, figure skater Daisuke Takahashi experienced an imported SUV that he is currently interested in.

By Takeshi Sato
August 6, 2024

Shocked by American Size

In Part 1, we wrote about how figure skater Daisuke Takahashi gave up his beloved Lexus LX to move to the United States, where his ice dance coach was located. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was unable to move to the United States [ight away], and now he uses a car that he found under the condition that it could be driven immediately for transportation.

So, in this second part of the project, we're going to think about "your favorite car," and we've prepared three cars. The first one is the Cadillac Escalade.

Since its launch in 1999, the Escalade has had an overwhelming presence as America's leading premium SUV. The fourth generation was introduced in Japan in 2014, and the current fifth generation went on sale in 2020.

"I've always wanted one," says Takahashi as he opens the door to the Escalade.

"I like big cars, so this size is attractive. When I saw a picture of a white Escalade, I was impressed, so if I were to buy one myself, I think I would choose white as the body color."

Body size: Length x width x height: 5400 x 2065 x 1930 mm. Equipped with a 6156cc V8 OHV engine.

Takahashi, who sat in the driver's seat, checked the feel of the seat and the sound of the sound system. Figure skating and ice dancing are inseparably linked to music, so the sound quality of the audio is an important factor in choosing a car.

Takahashi, who then settled into the rear seat, commented: 'I'm starting to feel like it's more of a car to ride in the back seat than a car to drive by myself.”

The second row includes a captain's seat with a power release and slide mechanism and a 60/40-split bench seat.

“The bigger the better, but I often travel around Tokyo, so I was a little concerned about that I might have trouble finding a place to park. Also, even in Tokyo, the roads around Setagaya can suddenly become narrow, can't they? Several times when I was driving the Lexus LX, I encountered situations where I thought, "I might not be able to get through here!", so this car is probably better for relaxing in the back seat. So it's a bit early for me. So yes, if I was based in the US, I think the Escalade would have been a perfect fit."

Next, Takahashi checked out the Porsche Cayenne PHEV (plug-in hybrid).

"I really like the shape of Porsche, whether it's an SUV or a sports car. I generally like square, angular cars, but for some reason, I'm drawn to the rounded lines of Porsches."

The Cayenne E-Hybrid model used in the photo is equipped with a new generation battery that improves the range of EV driving.

Takahashi seemed very interested in the mechanism of plug-in hybrids, and nodded deeply when he was told that it can run quietly as an electric car, or as a hybrid car without worrying about charging.

“It's very cool, but maybe too cool. It might be a luxury concern. If I were to own a Porsche, it might be possible to combine the Boxster with a large, square SUV like the Escalade or Lexus LX, for example. But you'd have to work pretty hard to own two cars (laughs)."

The Cayenne E-Hybrid model can reach a top speed of 254km/h.

The last car to appear was the Range Rover. The moment Takahashi saw this car, his face lit up.

"It's amazing how it's both big and elegant."

The new Range Rover is the first model to adopt Land Rover's new architecture, MLAFlex (flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture).

After getting into the driver's seat, Takahashi was at a loss for words when he looked around the interior.

"...The feel of this leather is amazing. It's gorgeous yet elegant, and it's so smooth to the touch, I am a little overwhelmed."

When he was told that the rosewood-colored leather and other interior features were 615,000 yen options, Takahashi exclaimed in surprise, "Wow!" But don't worry, even with the standard specifications, the Range Rover's leather is of more than enough quality.

In the interior, the "Air Purification System Pro" equipped with dual "Nanoe X" technology for allergen reduction and virus removal improves the comfort and health of the occupants.

"Leather feels like a tradition of British cars, but the interior design itself is simple and very modern. I always choose new home appliances, but this interior feels very new. Can I take it for a drive?"

With Takahashi at the wheel, the Range Rover accelerates quietly.

"It feels smooth when starting off, which is amazing. The brakes feel good too, so it feels safe even if I'm giving my loved ones a ride."

Two body types are available: the standard wheelbase (SWB) model used in the photo and the long wheelbase (LWB). You can choose from 4-seater, 5-seater, or 7-seater (only LWB for 4-seater and 7-seater).

A small corner approaches, and Takahashi clears it with delicate steering, just like a figure skater.

"Even though it’s tall, I don't feel anxious at all. The Range Rover is so stable that I can't believe I'm driving a sharp curve. It feels really good to drive."

The test drive car is an SV tailored by SVO (Special Vehicle Operations), which handles bespoke and high-performance specifications, so it's a little pricey, but I tell him that there are models in a lower price range. Takahashi then carefully researched the differences between diesel and gasoline.

Coat ¥126,500, cut and sew ¥26,400, pants ¥44,000, necklace ¥16,500, shoes ¥57,200 (all Ground Y/Yohji Yamamoto Press Room 03-54631500).

And finally, he said, "It was a fun day, and my range of car choices has really expanded!" with a big smile.

Once Takahashi has decided on his next car, I would definitely like to ask for another interview.

I mentioned this on Kazuki's Fan Fest, so thought I should share here: Hyoen released the dates of a series of special talk events with the cast! Dai-chan is participating in all of them: https://hyoen.jp/special.html

Thank you KiraraChin! 😊 These are the recorded talk shows that were announced a while back.

Even though I/we can’t watch them (they’re distributed via ePlus again), what makes me happiest about this is that Kana took part in one of the talk events since we hadn’t heard much from her lately. These are the line-ups:

#1: Dai-chan x Takuro

#2: Dai x Eliana x Marie x Kai

#3: Dai-chan x Seiji

#4: Dai x Shizuka x Masahiro

#5: Dai x Kana x Kenji x Akiko

#6: Dai x Takuro x Kazuki x Koshiro

#7: Dai x director Kikunojo Onoe x scriptwriter Riko Sakaguchi

"Hyoen 2024 - The Miracle of the Cross Star" will also be streamed via ePlus from 13 September.

Sorry, been slacking with the updates again! 🫠 But FOI is coming up, so here we go:

The most exciting news is that - according to fan reports about the Dai x Mao x Shizuka ePlus talk show - the solo number Dai is going to perform is self-choreographed (it seems like self-choreographing “Symmetry” with Kana-chan unlocked sth. in him)! :hap10: At the time of the recording Dai had not decided on the music for his solo number yet, but from today’s open FOI rehearsal we know that he settled on a piano piece. He is also part of two group numbers. Besides the talk, the ePlus delivery included footage of Shizuka, Mao and Dai training at the Funabashi rink with a Kana cameo and footage of Dai with Kao Miura at the rehearsals for “Ice Explosion 2023”.

FOI group numbers:
  • Exogenesis Symphony part 3: Jeremy, Daisuke, Jason, Kao (choreo by Jeremy Abbott)
  • Cell Block Tango (from Chicago): Kaitlyn/Andrew, Shae-Lynn, Rika, Akiko, Daisuke, Takeshi, Kiki, Marie (choreo by Kaitlyn Weaver)
  • Fall On Me (from the film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms): Stephane, Shoma (choreo by Stephane Lambiel)
  • Japanese themed number (song title(s) not announced yet): Shizuka, Mao, Kana and Andrew (choreo by Kana Muramoto)

Brief clips from the talkshow including glimpses at the on-ice practice:

GVEnOBhaoAAlrvh

During the talkshow Mao mentioned her motherly feelings towards Shoma and she and Dai commented on Haruka Imai’s and Shu Nakamura’s wedding, which took place a couple of weeks ago (Haruka and Shu performed in Mao’s “Beyond” and “Everlasting 33” shows and Shu used to be coached by Nagamitsu-sensei and to this day looks up to Dai-chan.) 😊

What’s less exciting (to me) is that Dai-chan experimented with his hair colour again 🫣 (I really liked the blue hair on him and wish he would go back to that instead). From his latest (paywalled) Deep Edge column about FOI:

What we know about FOI from rehearsal reports:

  • The show opens with a performance by Shizuka, Mao-chan and Dai-chan. 🥰
  • Kana and Dai have only one interaction this time – a lift during the finale (which makes me a little sad tbh – I hope they’ll bring back “Symmetry” for PIW in January).
  • Dai performs his solo program in the first half between Stephane’s/Shoma’s and Shizuka’s/Mao’s/Kana’s/Andrew’s collab.
  • His program contains a 3F.
  • He got tangled in the long hem of his costume and fell – maybe he’ll have it modified until tomorrow.

After tomorrow’s 5pm FOI performance an after talkshow with Shizuka, Mao, Dai and Shoma will be held:

Takahashi performed a solo number and attempted a triple jump. "I've been skating with other people a lot recently, so (solos) are a little nerve-wrecking. But this time, we've been rehearsing, and each of our solos has a really wonderful worldview. I'm sure everyone will enjoy it," he said.
The show will open with a performance by Arakawa, Asada, and Takahashi. Arakawa said, "We've never skated to the same number together as the three of us. It was fun even when we were creating it. Surprisingly, Dai-chan is actually the most reliable. As I thought, skating together as a trio just makes you feel better." Takahashi laughed and said, "I'm nervous," and Asada smiled and said, "We definitely can't fail!"

Friends' thoughts
Daisuke's solo performance was full of strange blade techniques that I've never seen before, but do they have names?
His superb attention to detail and beautiful, seamless body movements that are completed in seconds from the moment he appears until the finish are all within one person, without any contradictions. He's truly one of a kind.

I think the costume was perfect. When he was standing still, I didn't think the hem was asymmetrical, but when he skated it looked asymmetrical. Is it because his body was rotating in a complex way? When he raised his hand, the thin fabric became a screen, and there was a moment when I could see his face through the backlight, and I almost cried out.

During his singles days, he was a skater who expressed music purely rather than the story that the choreographer put into it (and this often captured the essence of the original work better than anyone else), but it's interesting that he seems to have a story in mind when choreographing for himself. Is it because he went through the Ice Dance period? Or is it because of the special conditions of creating his own work?

Daisuke Takahashi's choreography is so good! It has a fantastical atmosphere, but it's not easy to understand the symbols. Is this the work of someone who considers himself bad at choreography? I want Daisuke to try more choreography. I feel his unique sense. The synchronization with the sound of his feet was stylish...

After Friends ended, I was thinking back to Daisuke Takahashi's Pro. There was no obvious climax, no boasting about making it difficult to understand, there was a story, but it had to follow the music, and it was all blended together without any choppy feeling of "here comes the trick" and it went by in a flash. I felt a vague sense of the aesthetics that was also present in Symmetry.

Dai-chan's solo, which we couldn't see in its entirety at the rehearsal,
The world view is so wonderful✨
A world that only he can create
It feels like he's doing something incredible with his feet
But it's over while he's immersed in the marriage with the music
He's a one-of-a-kind skater, and his costumes are also part of the performance
The beauty of his spins...

Mao's solo was dark Mao. The Chicago collab is one that Daisuke loves, right? By the way, Daisuke's dancing in the finale was so good it was crazy. Shae and Kaitlyn's skating had the feeling of "same language."

According to several reports Dai does a 3F in the opening and a 3Lz in his solo program.

Repos from morning practice ❤️:

I was able to watch the practice, see Daisuke giving advice to Kana-chan's solo choreography😍💕 and see Stephane dancing wonderfully to other people's songs✨Arakawa-san's professional choreography was definitely Kana-chan's✨Thank you for giving me something that you don't see very often😊

After Kana-chan played her solo song (partway through?), she brushed up on it while talking to Daisuke-san who was watching from the side of the rink. By the way, Yama-san is on the side of the rink today in a tie and coat, just like a coach 😇
