Dance - Compulsory Dance - Rhumba

Thanks for the review, La Rhumba. Do you think that Charlie White overmaches his partner? They said the same once about Belbin and Agosto, but I think Tanith has caught up.

I am beginning to believe that there is a strategic Russian-Canadian alliance, with the Russians promising to back D/L and V/M with the proviso that Canada back DomShabs on an ongoing basis. Den/Sta are retiring after this year so they aren't part of the deal.

Therefore, I was not surprised to see D/L on top after the CD--and DomShabs in 3rd. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Incidentally, the judges for the OD are: AUS, BUL, CAN, CZE, GER, ITA, JPN, LTU, POL, RUS, UKR, USA. Half the panel is SSR/Eastern European (as usual), and if you add Canada to the Eastern bloc, it looks as if the deal is IN.

Den/Sta, DelShoes and B/A will all be fighting for that 3rd medal.

If this is the case I have to believe Domnina/Shabalin will win gold should they skate error-free in the final 2 portions. As I said earlier I cant imagine the Russians making a deal with another country to merely win a medal that is not gold, while helping the other country win gold, in an event that is their only medal chance this year. Of course crazier things have happened I suppose.

In this scenario, are D/L told that if they win and intend to compete in Vancouver, they will drop like rocks starting in 2008?

Thank you so much for this link and review.

I have to agree 100% with your statement "Ice Dance is about interpreting the different rhythms of all the Dances, and couples who stick to their one, developed, same style are failing IMO." It drives me crazy to see great scores going to couples that approach every dance in one style and/or like their favorite dance. The ability to show the contrast between multiple styles of dancing and appropriate response to different kinds of music (or not) why I miss multiple CD's. (Although I can't say that the judging was all that great when there were 2 CD's -- I saw Lobacheva/Averbukh dance Blues and Waltz CD's in Malmo in 2003 in the exact same waltz style, and they lead their group in both. 3 CD's is idea for a dance lover, but was an amazing test of stamina and concentration for the dancers.)

La Rhumba, thanks so much for the review! Very interesting and informative! Not being able to really judge speed and ice coverage, I also would have had the Kerrs above both K/N and F/S. Faella's upper body esp. her arms really bothered me in this CD. I haven't been paying that much attention to the Kerrs the past year, but did they improve quite a lot?
Totally looking forward to more reviews to come!

D/L would be expected to retire if they won gold. If they didn't, woe betide renegers. All the Canadian teams would experience the cold shoulder.

I love the compulsory dances. I wish they would drop the original and free dances and do three different compulsories.

I do, I do! I love seeing what an actual waltz looks like. Don't care so much for the circus.

the only reason I wouldn't want to see just hte CDs (other than the fact that they're too short) is because the music gets to you after a while... I twitch after 20+ CDs at Nationals lol

As for their OD, yes, I'd agree it's their weakest event if they had kept the OD they had at the beginning of the season. The one they debuted at the GPF is very strong and I hope they skate the lights out w/it.

I agree. D & L WON the OD at GPF, so I hardly think it's weak.

they should have all participating "countries" have thei own "home country" judge...this whole fiasko like the "no bulgarian technician" at Euros...bothers me..
they should do something about it....

and for all you pessimistic...(and maybe sour from euros) people who says the french have no chance at podium....you all degrade their victory at warsaw in bitterness and negativity so much...

im just crossing my fingers for a clean and FAIR OD

good luck too ALL

For once I am excited about the dance event because it is so close, it makes it a real competition. I agree that the top 5 can all have a chance a medal, I think it may come down to nerves and consistancy for the medalist. I hope the americans skate well, they have had so much critism this year about thier programs. Sometimes I think dance is hard to top program after program every year.

Thank you so much for this link and review.

You're welcome, thanks to everyone for the kind comments. :)

It's been particularly noticeable in the OD in recent years, that couples would get high scores for a supposed Fox trot interpretation that bore no resemblance to a Fox trot. But now it's becoming noticable in the CDs too, especially as we've had an overdose of the Waltz rhythm over the last few seasons, a sudden change to the Rhumba, a so called simple dance with few steps, compared to the Golden Waltz, certainly foxed some seasoned campaigners yesterday, and it made me really appreciate in retrospect the amazing qualities and skills of the past icedancers who performed 3 CDs [with more sequences too] an Original and Freedance. It's quite obvious to me that icedancers spend alot less time practising the different CDs in their training schedules these days, but that's as a consequence of the higher demands of the endless required elements in the OD and FD. Ice Dance today is more athletic and less dance oriented, which is why I always appreciate the couples who maintain a flair for pure dance, and could step off the ice and become Ballroom dancers.

Oh, Tanith has definitely caught up, and has been outperforming Ben this season IMO, she is carrying him atm, he looks complacent to me and not quite on top of his game, but people get an impression of a couple and it sticks even long after the truth of it has passed.

No, I think Charlie and Meryl are well matched overall. He is undoubtedly superior to her atm, she just lacks a little finesse that will surely come with maturity. They are both very young, and impress me greatly. They are exciting to watch, and will have a great future together, I'm sure. :agree:
